(2022春·北京·高一北大附中阶段练习)Carnival: One Day in Rio
Last year I went to the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, and it blew my mind. It had been my dream to attend the
famous carnival for many years, so I was excited. However, the moment I arrived, I was a little bit nervous because
there were so many people on the streets. They say that five or six million people come to Rio during carnival time
and about two million of them are on the streets on any given day. Luckily, I had a local guide, my sister’s friend
Ronnie. He said he would take care of me and show me all the highlights. He did not let me down.
Well, the carnival is most definitely all about the samba. It’s a style of music and dance which has its roots in
Africa. Lots of Africans were used as slave labor by the Portuguese when Brazil was being colonized, so this mixed
culture of African, Latin and European styles is really strong here. Samba music is usually fast and exciting with a
lot of drums and harmonic vocals. It’s the kind of music that you can’t help dancing to, and I was learning that as I
followed Ronnie through the crowd, my hips and shoulders were swinging almost involuntarily.
Ronnie had got us tickets for the samba parade, the icon of Brazilian culture, inside the Sambadrome where
the top samba schools compete for the championship title, but we still had a long way to go through the street
parties. He said most people enjoy the carnival by making their own parties in the street. About the samba parade,
twelve main teams compete for the championship, and if they win, their performance will be talked about for years
to come. So, you must be wondering how it was. Well, I’m afraid I can’t tell you. Ronnie and I never made into the
Sambadrome. We spent the day moving from one street party to another. There were more snacks, more drinks and
lots of dancing. Do I regret missing the main parade? Not at all. I experienced the carnival like the locals, and it
was truly amazing.
4.What was the main cause for the author’s tension in the beginning?
A.The doubts about the visit. B.The nervousness over the crowd.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂C.The inability to find a local guide. D.The anxiety about visiting a new country.
5.What can we learn about samba from this passage?
A.Samba has its roots in America.
B.Samba is not the taste of the writer.
C.Samba has a long and mixed culture.
D.Samba music is usually slow and soft.
6.The author didn’t regret missing the parade because ________.
A.she met some amazing local people
B.she didn’t have the tickets for the parade
C.she celebrated the festival in a local way
D.she enjoyed the carnival by making her own parties
7.According to the passage, which of the following words can best describe Ronnie?
A.Modest and determined. B.Humorous and ambitious.
C.Creative and sympathetic D.Reliable and considerate.

(2023春·全国·高三专题练习)You don’t have to be a fan of math to get excited about Pi (“π”) Day. While
the event may start with some calculations, it is more than likely to conclude with a slice or two of delicious pie.
The holiday is held every March 14, because “π” is widely recognized as 3.14.
The tradition of honoring “π” began at San Francisco’s Exploratorium museum. On March 14, 1988, physicist
Larry Shaw convinced his colleagues to mark the day by marching around one of the museum’s circular spaces and
consuming fruit pies. The celebration was made official in 2009 when the U. S.House of Representatives set aside
March 14 as Pi Day.
Today, Pi Day is observed in many creative ways.
Students at the California Institute of Technology in Los Angeles host a pieeating event, which begins at 1:
59 a. m.and features 26 pies, each of five different flavors. Though that might seem random, the date (3.14), time
(159), number of pies (26), and number of varieties (5) recreate the first nine digits of “π”: 3.14159265!
Students applying for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge eagerly wait for the day
every year to find out if they have been accepted. However, instead of sending out the offers at 3:14 p. m., the
institution waits till 6: 28 p. m.6.28 is referred to as “tau”, which is “π” multiplied by 2. The number is believed to
be much more reliable than “π” by some experts and even has its own celebration on June 28. Since 2017, MIT has
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂also used Pi Day as a fundraiser to support its students, departments and programs.
This day is also Albert Einstein’s birthday, so the town of Princeton, New Jersey, where Einstein lived until his
death in 1955, celebrates the occasion with multiday festivities that end on March 14.Visitors can participate in
concerts, shows, as well as pieeating, pirecitation, and Einsteinlookalike contests.

A.In San Francisco. B.In Los Angeles.
C.In Cambridge. D.In Princeton.
9.When was Pi Day made an official holiday?
A.In 1955. B.In 1988.

10.What does MIT do on Pi Day according to the passage?
A.Inform applicants of application results.
B.Conduct a calculating test.
C.Organize a march around the campus.

A.To advise.

(2022春·江苏镇江·高一统考期中)Every year on June 21st, World Music Day is commemorated in over
120 countries, including its birthplace of France, to honor both amateur and professional musicians. Citizens of a
city or country are permitted and encouraged to perform music outside in their neighborhoods, public areas, and
parks on Music Day. Free concerts are also held, where musicians perform for the joy of it rather than for a fee.
In the 1970s, American musician Joel Cohen, who was then working for a French radio station, came up with
the idea of having musicians perform on the evening of June 21 to celebrate the start of summer. It was finally
accepted by France’s Ministry of Culture in 1982. The day started in France and has since extended to countries

How Do We Celebrate Mother’s Day
It is specially in a big family like ours that such an idea takes hold—we decided to have a special celebration
of Mother’s Day. We thought it a fine idea. It made us all realize how much Mother had done for us for years and
all the efforts and sacrifice that she had made for our sake.
We decided that we’d make it a great day, a holiday for all the family, and do everything we could to make
Mother happy. It was our plan to make it a day just like Christmas, so we decided to decorate the house with
flowers and ribbons. We got Mother to arrange the decoration, because she always does it at Christmas.
Well, after breakfast we had it arranged as a surprise for Mother that we would hire a car and take her for a
beautiful drive away into the country, which would be a great enjoyment for her. We got everything arranged for the
trip, and we got Mother to cut up some sandwiches and make up a sort of lunch in case we got hungry. Mother
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂packed it all up in a basket for us ready to go into the car.
Well, when the car came to the door, it turned out that there hardly seemed as much room in it as we had
supposed, because we hadn’t considered Father’s fishing basket and the rods, and it was apparent that we couldn’t
all get in. Father that he could just wait at home. But of course we all felt that it would never do it, especially as we
knew he would make trouble. The two girls, Anne and Mary, would gladly have stayed and helped Mother get
dinner, only it seemed such a pity to, on a lovely day like this, have their new hats home to miss the beautiful day.
Will and I would have dropped out, but unfortunately we wouldn’t have been any use in getting the dinner.
So in the end it was decided that Mother would stay home and just have a lovely day round the house, and get
the dinner. We all drove away with three cheers for Mother, and Mother stood and watched us from the window for
as long as she could see us. Father caught such big fish that he felt sure that Mother couldn’t have landed them
anyway, if she had been fishing for them, and Will and I fished too, though we didn’t get so many as Father. We all
had a splendid time.
