Family-friendly walks
PADLEY GORGE
Next to Grindleford Station, eight miles north of Bakewell, lies Padley Gorge. Trails are kept as natural as
possible---it's more a case of finding the gaps in the woods than following a path.
LONGSHAW ESTATE
The 1.7-mile walking route around this National Trust estate skirts the upper end of Padley Gorge. People love
the stepping stones, but Longshaw is mostly all about the giant fallen trees, left in place for little hands and feet to
delightfully climb over.
HIGGER TOR
A pile of giant rocks dominates Higger Tor, the best of several lookouts along the Ringinglow Road between
Hathersage and Sheffield. Walk through the nearby fields, then let the kids climb over hundreds of strangely
smooth grey stones. The views out over the Hope Valley are great and impressive, and the rock pools in Burbage
Brook are perfect for rowing in.
STANAGE EDGE
Popular with rock climbers, this stone cliff marks the boundary of the mysterious land of the Dark Peak cliff
and the grass-covered flat land of White Peak. It's a six mile circular walk from Hathersage. Alternatively, park at
the Hollin Bank Car Park and climb half a mile to the top, out of breath.
CHATSWORTH ESTATE
A three-mile circle from Calton Lees Car Park takes in a ruined factory, the pretty village of Edensor and
views of Chatsworth House. Appreciate the stretch along the River Derwent---deer often hang out there.

Tourists to the North Antrim Coast come for its breathtaking beauty On this stretch of coast, myth and history
live side by side, and running out of things to do is near impossible. Giant’s Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede, the Iron
Isles’ filming locations ...
However, when I make my way to the north of the-country in October, none of them are on my mind. What
brings me to the coastal town of Portrush are the waves.
Located, on a peninsula, Portrush is home to three brilliant beaches and all the usual points of interest of a
coastal town. But what makes the North Antrim Coast so special is the promise of the consistent waves hitting its
shores. Although still relatively unknown, it’s a surfer’s dream destination. This is the home of six-time Irish
national surfing champion, Andrew Hill, after all.
I meet Andrew at his surf shop, the most popular in Portrush. After hiring a surf board and jumping in the
water at West Strand, I quickly realise that my trusted wetsuit is not enough. Within just 30 minutes, I’ve lost all
feeling in my feet and hands, and my ears are burning. I retreat to a nearby café and gulp down steaming tea before
popping by Andrew’s shop again. Surf boots are what I need, we decide. I leave with a new determination to master
the icy Atlantic waves. I’m invited to surf a different spot with Andrew and his friend that afternoon. but I decline
his generous offer. My head is set on one thing only: taking revenge on the same waves that almost turned me into
an ice block that very morning.
Even with boots, surfing the cold waters of Portrush leaves my feet purple. I become covered in bruises that
don’t register until I thaw out each night, and it takes a couple of days to fully regain feeling in my hands. But it’s
worth it, and I would gladly do it all over again.

The fertile land of the Nile delta is being eroded (侵蚀) along Egypt’s Mediterranean coast at an astonishing
rate in some parts estimated at 100 metres per year. In the past, land washed away from the coastline by the currents
of the Mediterranean Sea used to be replaced by sediment (沉淀物) brought down to the delta by the River Nile,
but this is no longer happening.
Up to now, people have blamed this loss of delta land on the two large Aswan dams in the south of Egypt,
which hold back almost all of the sediment that used to flow down the river. Before the dams were built, the Nile
flowed freely carrying huge quantities of sediment. But when the Aswan dams were constructed to provide
electricity and irrigation, and to protect the huge population centre of Cairo from annual flooding and drought, most
of the sediment with its natural fertilizer accumulated up above the dam in the southern upstream half of Lake
Nasser, instead of passing down to the della.
Now, however, there turns out to be more to the story. It appears that the sediment-free water picks up sand as
it erodes the river bed and banks on the 800-kilometre trip to Cairo. Daniel Jean Stanley of the Smithsonian
Institute noticed that water samples taken in Cairo indicated that the river sometimes carries more than 850 grams
of sediment per cubic metre of water — almost half of what it carried before the dams were built.
International environmental organizations are beginning to pay closer attention to the region, partly because of
the problems of erosion and pollution of the Nile delta, but mainly because they fear the impact this situation could
have on the whole Mediterranean coastal ecosystem.
But there are no easy solutions. In the immediate future, Stanley believes that one solution would be to make
artificial floods to flush out the delta waterways, in the same way that natural floods did before the construction of
the dams. He says, however, that in the long term an alternative process such as desalination (脱盐) may have to be
used to increase the amount of water available.
8. What stopped the sediment coming down to the delta?
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂A. The Mediterranean Sea. B. The River Nile.

A. There is no need to worry about the delta.
B. The methods of measurement need improving.
C. Whether the situation is good or not remains to be seen.
D. The dams’ consequences are beyond people’s expectation.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?

B. Rewards for the challenge.
C. Severe influence of the situation.
D. Possible solutions to the problem.

When you think of Chinese food in the US, fried rice, or General Tso’s chicken may first come to mind. But a
new museum exhibition in New York City is trying to expand visitors’ palates (味蕾). It features stories of famous
cooks like Martin Yan and home cooks whose food represents 18 different regional cooking styles of China.
“I think it’s unfair to just classify Chinese cooking as one,” says Kian Lam Kho, an organizer of “Sour, Sweet,
Bitter, Spicy: Stories of Chinese Food and Identity in America” at the Museum of Chinese in America. “Even with
the same dish or same cuisine, every family has a different variation.” That’s why the organizers say if you want to
taste the full range of Chinese cuisine in the US, you’ll need to go beyond restaurants and into home kitchens,
which can play a central role in many immigrants’ lives.
“The kitchen itself is kind of a comfort when you come to a new country. That’s the one place where you set
up as your home base, and you cook things that you remember from your past,” explains Audra Ang, another
organizer.
One of the home cooks showcased in the exhibition is Ni Biying, 80, of Manhattan. She worked as a live-in
babysitter for years before she could finally afford to rent a home with her own kitchen. These days, you can
usually find her moving around her one-bedroom apartment as a sweet smell of vinegar and rice wine floats from
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂her stove. For Ni, a small dinner for friends and family means preparing almost a dozen different dishes. She
learned some of her techniques from her father, who made most of her family’s meals when she was a child. “I still
miss the beef with stir-fried celery my father used to cook,” she says. And it’s the kind of comfort food that defines
Chinese food for Ni.
12. What is the new museum exhibition mainly about?
A. Cuisine of different countries. B. Exploration of famous restaurants.
C. History of Chinese immigration. D. Stories of Chinese food and cooks.
13. Why does the kitchen play a key role in many immigrants’ lives?
A. It provides a wealthy life. B. It brings a sense of belonging.
C. It helps them to accept new cultures. D. It enables them to forget the past.
14. What can we learn about Ni Biying from Paragraph 4?
A. She worked in a Chinese restaurant.
B. She made most meals as a child.
C. She learned cooking from her father.
D. She lives with a big family.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Cuisine Gains New Variations
B. Home Cooking Brings More to the Table
C. Immigrants Seek Their Fortune in the US
D. Chinese Restaurant Tells Immigrant Tales

A year ago, I had one of the most important interviews of my life. ____16____ I could say what I thought the
members of the interview wanted to hear. I'm so-good at multitasking that I would be able to shoulder the various
responsibilities. That might be true, yet it seemed to be unreal. The more honest answer was that I knew it would be
difficult, but I wanted to try anyway.
____17____
This tough situation led me to hesitate during the interviews. It also recalled my past experience of being
interviewed when an interviewer asked me to give an example of a time when I had been caring. The answer that
came to mind was that I volunteered at a nursing home and felt honored to sit with the patients and listen to their
stories. But I didn't think that was dramatic enough to impress the interviewers. So, instead I told them about when
one of the residents threw up, I cleaned it up. ____18____ That wasn't caring and it suggested that my best quality

Back to my most recent interview and the question about how to shoulder the multiple responsibilities of the
role. ____19____ I had learned the significance of being true to myself. So I answered simply, "With difficulty".
To my relief, the review members nodded knowingly and smiled. This exam can test my honesty and I can come up
with appropriate answers.
I've come to realize that interviews don't have "right" or "wrong" answers. I still see them as exams, but they're
not testing my ability to copy somebody else's answers. Actually, the exam is about something I am well familiar
with: me. ____20____
A. I hesitated but not for long.
B. I immediately felt embarrassed.
C. I wasn't sure which answer to give.
D. Never give the interviewers wrong answers.
E. It seemed the interviewers were quite satisfied.
F. It's not about "right" answers but about being yourself.
G. At the end, I was asked how to balance the different parts of the role.

One morning on my way to school, noticed an elderly woman dressed in a yellow vest (马 甲)carrying a
garbage bag and one of those rubbish claws (爪形器具)."What's that lady doing?" I asked mum. "Vest Lady. She
just picks up rubbish around here for fun," mum said. "Why would someone think picking up rubbish looking like a
construction worker is fun?" I puzzled.
For several years I'd witness this mysterious Vest Lady—rain or shine — on my way to school. I had thought
she was crazy for picking up rubbish. Eventually I smiled and waved at her each time I saw her. Later, I moved to
high school. The time I saw rubbish here and there I felt really annoyed. Then I'd think, "Why isn't anyone picking
up this rubbish? People are so inconsiderate I" However, shortly after, I realized picking up the rubbish was not
someone ease's problem.
Now I couldn't walk past litter without feeling guilty. I volunteered to clean up rubbish around our school.
Strange as it might sound, picking up litter was kind of a thrill for me! In fact, I was so determined that for my 17th
birthday I bought myself a rubbish claw, reusable gloves and a reflective safety yellow vest with my own name on
it.
During my first attempt in my stylish equipment, met with unfriendly looks from others as if I were a criminal
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂doing community service. One day,I had an epiphany(顿悟):"I'm acting just like Vest Lady!"
But there was too much rubbish around, cigarette ends littered about, cans rolling on the street, pieces of paper
hidden in the grass and plastic. alone was too weak J How would I get more volunteers involved in rubbish
removal? A smart idea flashed into my mind.
