Below are some suggestions about how to help people in poor areas. Which one do you think is the best?
Robin, from Class 1, Grade 8
I think health is the most important thing. We need to make sure that the money we give to the charity (慈善机
构) is spent wisely. We should spend the money on clean water supplies (供应) and better health care.
Bethany, from Class 2, Grade 8
I think the most important thing is to improve the education of poor areas. There is an old saying “If you give a
man a fish, you’ll feed him for a day. If you teach him how to fish, you’ll feed him for a lifetime.” We need to
help people to help themselves.
Colin, from Class 3, Grade 8
People seem to giv,e a lot more money to charity when there is a sudden huge disaster (灾难). It’s good for
people to do so but I think everyone should give a small part of their salary (工资) to charity. If everyone
did that, it would make a difference.
Mary, from Class 4, Grade 8
Giving money to charity can help, but it is not the final and best answer. I think the best thing we can do is to
send experts (专家) like engineers, doctors and teachers to help the people in poor areas to help themselves.

C. in the supermarket D. around the neighborhood

Edward walked slowly past the school field where his elder brother, Leon, was playing basketball. Edward did
not stop and ask if he could join, because last time he joined in the game, Leon’s friends couldn’t stand his poor
skills and refused to play with him.
“Sorry, man,” Leon tried to be kind. “Everyone has a talent for something,” he told Edward. “Basketball is just
not your thing, like math is just not my thing.” Edward had always been good at math, and he could solve many
difficult math problems.
A few days later, Leon’s math teacher told him he was going to fail if he could not get a good grade in the
following test. Leon wished that he had his brother’s math ability, so he asked Edward if he could help him out.
Looking down at his book, Edward said, “You know, I’d really like to get my basketball skills improved. I can
help you with math, but you’d have to help me, too.”
Leon knew how hopeless Edward was at basketball. But, then again, he felt the same about math, too.
“Let’s try it.” Leon said.
The boys agreed that over the next two weeks they planned to spend an hour each day after school working on
math problems and then an hour playing basketball.
Several days later, Leon got his test. “We did it!” he shouted as he raced into their home after school. “I got an
A. I’m going to pass this class after all. And it’s all because of you,” he said, hugging his brother.
Then, the next day, they came to the pickup court. Leon asked his friends to allow Edward to play on his team.
Finally, the brothers won!
“That was a pretty good basketball game for a math whiz (高手),” said Leon as he and Edward headed home.
“Just like your math grade, right?” said Edward, still excited from his victory (胜利). “It was a pretty good
grade for a basketball star.”
24. Edward did not stop to join in the basketball game because ________.

C. he did badly in playing basketball D. he was not interested in basketball

A. Angry. B. Hopeless. C. Confident. D. Interested.
26. What can we learn from the two brothers’ experience?
A. Edward gave up playing basketball for his poor skills.B. Leon worked hard but still failed to pass his math test
C. Edward and Leon were both unhappy with their results.
D. Edward and Leon achieved their goals by helping each other.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Trading Talent B. Making a Decision
C. Sharing Stories D. Keeping the Peace
C
“You don’t have to be great to get started, but you have to get started to be great.” I believe it is thought
natural in today’s society to just let life happen to us. I also believe that we sometimes damage (破坏) our well-
planned thoughts about success because it is easier to just carry on as usual rather than ‘try’ with the possibility of
failure in mind.
The main reason why most people never get moving is because they have no real idea about what they want.
Without a certain result in your mind, it is really difficult to get going. Even if you do, your motivation may soon
disappear and you give up soon.
Why not consider what is really important in your life? Write down what excites you, what would truly make
you happy and what problems you have. At the end of the week, take a careful look at what you write. You will
soon begin to realize where you should be heading.
Knowledge is fantastic but it is not life-changing until used. I love to read personal development books to keep
a hopeful feeling of my life. Also I know that if I don’t set goals and try to achieve then, then I will always be a talk
the talk person who is great at giving advice but useless at realizing it. If you have no plans of practicing what you
say, then it may be best to keep your mouth closed.
Once you have a clear plan in mind, the next step is to take action. Action will explain you. Whatever excuses
we have for not matching our talent, the fact is that time will always move forward. Be whatever you want to be
and whatever you can be. Always remember our only limits (限制) are the ones we create for ourselves. Life is not
what we think; it is what we experience when we act upon our thoughts.
28. In Paragraph 2, the writer wants to tell us ________.
A. what people need to get in their life
B. what people have in their mind as a result
C. why people find it difficult to get moving
D. why people should practice instead of talking
29. The underlined word “motivation” probably means ________.
A. a wish that is unlikely to come trueB. a result that is expected by most people
C. a belief that stops you from doing the right thing
D. a feeling that makes you decide to do something
30. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Success is easily achieved if we carry on as usual.
B. Little will be achieved unless we take strong action.
C. The more goals we set, the less failure we will have.
D. The more knowledge we learn, the greater our life will be.
D
As a therapist (治疗专家) and a mom, I’ve learned that you cannot “fix” your child’s self-esteem (自尊) as a
parent. In my experience, kids develop self-esteem by doing difficult things. To give you an example, when your
children were young and learned to walk, you were probably proud of them and praised (表扬) them for it. But
when they’re older, you should compliment them on things that are more difficult for them to do. When they
solve a problem that’s challenging and important to them now, it builds self-esteem.
In our culture today, it sometimes seems that kids get praised for almost anything. But when you praise them
for things that aren’t really difficult for them, it doesn’t build their real self-esteem. At best, they will feel better for
a few minutes. Of course, it’s important to encourage our kids as often as we can, as long as the praise isn’t for
something they’ve been doing easily for years, like tying their shoes. Think about it this way: if your boss told you
“nice work” for printing something out on your computer, would you value that praise? Probably not!
You have to look at self-esteem through the framework (框架) of problem-solving. Feeling good about
yourself is a problem you have to solve; you solve it by learning how to do things better, not by talking about it and
feeling better artificially (人为地). Of course, there’s nothing wrong with helping your children express their
feelings. Just know that it’s not going to help them develop their problem-solving skills and won’t help produce
self-esteem: In other words, if you make your children feel good, they will feel good for the moment, but if you
show them what to do to feel good about themselves, they can use those skills for the rest of their life.
31. The passage is written for ________.
A. teachers B. parents C. bosses D. kids
32. The underlined phrase “compliment them on” probably means ________.
A. protect children from B. blame children for
C. provide children with D. praise children for
33. The writer would probably agree that ________.
A. the more praise children get, the more self-esteem they will developB. parents should praise their kids as often as possible to make kids happy
C. it’s more important for parents to show children how to do things better
D. it’s useless for parents to try to help their children express their feelings
.
34 Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. How to Make Your Child Feel Good B. How to Solve Your Child’s Problems
C. How to Build Your Child’s Self-Esteem D. How to Give Your Child Proper Advice
第三部分

Year of the Tiger
The Chinese zodiac (生肖) is a 12-year cycle system, which was recorded in the Han Dynasty. According to
the Chinese zodiac, each year is named after an animal. In that order, the tiger is the third in the cycle and is the
animal for 2022.
The culture about tigers in China was born along the Yellow River, and new customs (风俗) about the tiger
began to appear slowly all over the country. Some famous places use the word “tiger” in their names, such as Tiger
Hill Pagoda in Suzhou, and Tiger Run Spring in Hangzhou.
Just as western people take the lion as the king of all animals, Chinese people believe the tiger has the same
meaning in their culture. They believe tigers can keep away bad things and bring happiness and good luck. That’s
why Chinese people consider the tiger as the symbol of power. For example, a “tiger general” refers to a general
(将军) who is as brave as a tiger.
There are many customs with the tiger in China. Chinese people like to use the character for tiger in the names
of the newborn babies. Tiger-shaped pillows (枕头) are popular traditional gifts for them, too. During the
celebration of the Spring Festival, Chinese people make the paper-cuts in the shape of the tiger, in the hope of
taking away bad luck and bringing good luck.
The year 2022 is a big sports year for Chinese people. The 24th Winter Olympics was held in February and the
19th Asian Games will be held in September. For this year of the tiger, Chinese people believe that they will be asbrave as the tiger to face the challenges and hope for the bright future.
