With a round face, short hair and a big nose, my dad is a hardworking worker in a factory in Beijing. He is
very serious, but I know that everything he does is for the benefit of our family. He likes playing football, just like
me. We always talk about football and play it together on weekends.
A few days ago, something interesting happened at home. It was a sunny Sunday and my dad didn’t go to
work. After lunch, my dad was asleep and I felt a little bit bored. Suddenly, I had a funny idea. I decided to draw on
my dad’s face while he was sleeping to surprise him and make him laugh.I took four colored pens and walked into my father’s room quietly, trying not to make a sound. Then, I slowly
drew on his face with my yellow, blue, red and green pens. It took me about 10 minutes to finish my dad’s
“makeup”, but it didn’t wake him up.
Then I went back into the living room and pretended (假装) to watch TV. About half an hour later, my dad
woke up, looked at himself in the mirror and asked me, “Am I the coolest Dad in the world?” It really made me
laugh. Fathers don’t necessarily have to be serious all the time.
Now I live at school, and I really miss the little tricks I like to play on him. Fathers play important roles in our
mental development. To kids, the name of father is another name for love.

Our newspaper
Some years ago, our head teacher, Mrs Waters, decided to start a school newspaper, and get as many students
as possible to take on the job of producing it—and parents, too. She felt the newspaper would help them learn more
about school life, through articles on things like sports achievements and arts projects, which not all students know
about if they’re not taking part. Students took the whole thing very seriously—and we now have a prize-winning
newspaper!
Some of my friends joined the newspaper team immediately and enjoyed it. I’d always loved creative writing
and drawing cartoons, which I thought would be perfect in the newspaper, so I signed up. My dad, who’s a
journalist, was pleased—he thought that even though I wasn’t keen on a job like his, the newspaper would be a
great opportunity for me. And he was right—I loved it! Dad often came along to give advice, which was popular
with the students. It was difficult sometimes, if he was busy, but he learned a lot about the school that way.
My first job was writing a report about a sports event—a writing style. I’d never attempted before. But Dad
reminded me it was similar in some ways to writing a story—getting information in the right order. Once I’d
understood that, there was no stopping me—and after my first efforts. I developed quite a professional style, whichwas brilliant. Sometimes the team couldn’t use what I’d written, or my cartoons, for whatever reason, but I didn’t
mind. And sometimes it was hard to finish stuff on time, but I usually got there.
I’m now one of the editors—we decide what goes into the newspaper, so our names no longer appear in print.
And it’s stressful sometimes as we don’t have much time, but we try to manage that properly. We also correct
mistakes in people’s articles, which we all had to get used to, but we were soon doing it without thinking—and in
our own schoolwork, too. I still put off calling people outside school for comments on stuff, but I guess it’s all good
experience—at least, that’s what Dad says!

Mindfulness Matters
In recent years, some schools have begun to introduce meditation, or mindfulness training, into theirclassrooms. During mindfulness training, students may be asked to sit quietly and observe their own thoughts and
feelings to avoid being controlled by them. Mindfulness training can help students overcome anxiety (焦虑),
control their behavior, and improve their ability to pay attention in class. Students are expected to learn how to
meditate in order to reduce stress and do better in their schoolwork.
Among schools that already teach meditation, the results have been positive. In one study, teachers reported
that after five weeks of mindfulness practice, their students were more focused. They also participated more fully in
class. A middle school in San Francisco reported that a student meditation program led to higher attendance rates
and better grades. Another study suggested that meditation helped students perform better on tests by improving
their working memory and reducing their anxiety.
Many supporters believe that meditation training programs can also help students overcome stress. For
example, Headstand is a mindfulness education program designed to help students overcome anxiety. A study
concluded that ninety-eight percent of participating students felt less stressed after they completed the Headstand
program. In another study, researchers in New Haven, Connecticut, followed students who participated in
meditation and yoga classes three times a week. They found that after each class, participants had lower levels of
cortisol, a stress hormone (激素), in their bodies.
Despite the positive results seen so far, critics also point out that much of the current research is not
rigorous(严谨的) enough. Associate Professor Tamar Mendelson agrees that research on meditation in children is
still in its early stages. However, even she insists that she has seen the positive impact of meditation on children.
Others express worries that meditation is not a valuable use of class time. But many disagree. Denise Pope, a
professor from the Stanford University, says, “This is something teachers can do immediately. You get a lot of
bang for your buck and anyone who is against it isn’t thinking clearly.” Indeed, additional studies will surely
strengthen our understanding of the benefits of mindfulness.
Although still in its early stages, research shows that meditation can help students learn to deal with anxiety
and stress. As an added bonus, students of mindfulness training also report better concentration and gains in their
academic performances. Therefore, meditation should be a part of every student’s school day. Participating in
“stillness” can be just as productive as other school-related activities.
32. Why do some schools introduce mindfulness training into classes?
A. To control students’ working memory. B. To reduce students’ stress and anxiety.
C. To increase students’ attendance rates. D. To research students’ thoughts and feelings.
33. The words “a lot of bang for your buck” in Paragraph 4 probably mean “________”.
A. challenges B. complaints C. advantages D. influences
34. The writer probably agrees that ________.A. further studies will prove the benefits of mindfulness training
B. students will become more talented with mindfulness training
C. doctors will do researches on the spread of mindfulness training
D. mindfulness training decides students’ mental and physical health
八、阅读短文, 根据短文回答问题。(共10分, 每小题2分)
A coloring book for grown-ups, Secret Garden, designed by Scottish illustrator Johanna, has sold more than 1
million copies in China since in June, becoming the bestseller with the fewest words. The reasons why it becomes
so popular among grown-ups are as follows:
Many readers describe the book as “a pressure-reducing tool” that helps people “recover from depression”.
There is something mysterious(神秘的)about coloring in that lets people slow down from the fast life and
forget about some daily routines.
Every reader is actually a “co-author” of the book, or a gardener, when they take part in the gardening process.
People may feel like walking into a secret garden and become its owner when the whole coloring in is complete.
Colors people use reflect(反映)their understanding of life. The “white space” on a Secret Garden page
represents the space in modern people’s heart. People can feel a strong sense of control and self-fulfillment while
coloring in the space on paper.
There are also some other opinions about this book. Some people don’t see any value in coloring in pictures
and patterns. It usually takes at least 20 hours for careful readers to fill in all the colors of a single picture in the
book. Many think that there are so many things need to be done while coloring in the innumerable(数不尽的)
little spaces, and matching the right colors is also a “brain-tiring” exercise. Besides, some doctors warn of the
negative impact of coloring in pictures for long hours, such as cervical spondylosis(颈椎病)and
shortsightedness(近视). And for most people, regular exercise is better than coloring books to maintain physical
and mental health.
