Do dogs dream?Unlike what you see in cartoons, real dogs don’t speak and describe their sleep. So you may wonder: do dogs
dream like their owners?
A scientific research done in MIT found that during sleep, brains of humans and dogs work in a similar way.
When you or your dog first falls asleep, you experience SWS—slow wave sleep. During that period, the brain waves
are slow but muscles (肌肉) are still active. Later, a deeper period of sleep happens. This period is called REM
sleep—rapid eye movements sleep. During REM, muscles are more relaxed but the mind is more active. It was proved
that both humans and dogs experience these two periods of the sleep cycle. Since we know that humans dream, it is
safe to sum up that dogs dream, too.
Scientists found that as a dog falls asleep, his breathing (呼吸) becomes deeper and more regular (有规律的).
After about 20 minutes in REM sleep, their dreams usually begin. While dreaming, the dog’s breathing may become
light and irregular, and his eyes move about behind the closed lids (眼睑) as if the dog is looking at something. By
comparing brain wave patterns, researchers suggested that during REM, dogs are visualizing (呈现) dream images (图
像) much like humans do during this period of sleep.
Besides, it’s also found that during REM, the sleeping brain works much like it does when awake, so both man
and dogs dream about things that happen during their waking hours. Information which is gathered during the day is
processed (处理) at night and may be relived in dreams. So your dog may “sleep run” as he runs after a cat or
fetches a ball.
Studies also show that some dogs dream more than others, and the frequency (频率) and length of dreams are
different according to the age and sizes of dogs. Young puppies usually experience more dreams than adult dogs. One
possible reason is that puppies get huge amounts of new information daily and have much to process at night. Dream
length and frequency are also related to the amount of sleep required. A dog that has an active day outside may sleep
more soundly than usual and experience longer periods of REM sleep, giving him more time to dream.
34. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The dog’s brain wave is active during SWS sleep.
B. The dog’s muscle is very active during REM sleep.
C. The dog usually breathes heavily while dreaming.
D. The dog’s brain processes information while dreaming.
35. What does the underlined word “relived” probably mean?
A. passed again B. experienced again
C. changed again D. cleared again
36. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Why dogs dream like humans.B. What bigger dogs dream about.
C. Why young puppies have more dreams.
D. What causes the differences of dogs’ dreams.

Suppose you become a leader in an organization. It’s very likely that you’ll want to have volunteers to help with
the organization’s activities. To do so, you should understand why people undertake volunteer work and what keeps
their interest in the work.
Let’s begin with the question of why people volunteer. Researchers have found several factors (要素) that
motivate (激发) people to get involved. For example, people volunteer to express personal values related to
unselfishness, to rich their experiences, and to strengthen social relationships. If volunteer positions do not meet these
needs, people may not wish to join in. To choose volunteers, you may need to understand the motivations of the
people you wish to attract.
People also volunteer because they are required to do so. To increase levels of community service, some schools
have started compulsory (强制性的) volunteer programs. Unfortunately, these programs can change people’s wish
of participation from an internal (内部的) factor (e.g. “I volunteer because it’s important to me”) to an external (外
部的) factor ( e.g. “I volunteer because I’m required to do so”). When that happens, people become less likely to
volunteer in the future. People must be mindful to this possibility when they make volunteer activities a must.Once people begin to volunteer, what leads them to stay in their positions over time? To answer this question,
researchers have done follow-up studies in which they track (追踪) volunteers over time. For instance, one study
followed 238 volunteers in Plorida over a year. One of the most important factors that influenced (影响) their
satisfaction as volunteers was the amount of suffering they experienced in their volunteer positions. “The researchers
suggest that attention should be given to training that would prepare volunteers for troublesome situations, or provide
volunteers with methods to deal with the upcoming problems. That could get the mentally ready.
Another study of 302 volunteers at hospitals in Chicago focused on individual differences, the researchers
studied in which levels people viewed “volunteer” as an important social role. It was believed that it was the personal
identity that made volunteers continue volunteer work. Researchers found a positive correlation (相关) between the
strength of role identity(身份) and the length of time people continued to volunteer. These results, once again, lead
to the advice: “Once an individual begins volunteering, continued efforts might focus on developing a volunteer role
identity. Items like T-shirts that allow volunteers to be recognized publicly for their contributions can help strengthen
role identity.”
37. Why do people volunteer according to the passage?

Have you heard of Golden Hook? Golden Hook is a group of twenty grandmas and a young man with a clever
business idea. They make beautiful, handmade, wool hats and sell them all around the world. You don’t buy Golden
Hook hats in a shop. If you want one, you go to their website and choose the style, size and colors you want. Then
you look at photos and choose a grandma. The grandma knits (织) the hat by hand just for you. One week later, you
get the hat with a special message from the grandma inside. You can see people wearing Golden Hook hats in Paris,
London, Tokyo and New York. People love the hats because every hat is different.
Golden Hook was started in Paris, by Jeremy Emsellem. In 2005, when he was 19, Jeremy began knitting hats
for fun. He wore the hats in class, and other students really liked them. Everyone wanted one! Jeremy made hats for
50 students, but he didn’t have time to make hats for everyone. Then, in 2007, he visited his old aunt and had an idea.
His aunt and her friends were all grandmothers. They didn’t have a job and they didn’t look after their children, so
they had lots of time. They were really bored. They were also very good at knitting. Jeremy talked to his aunt’sfriends. He asked them if they wanted to make his hats. Six of the grandmothers said “Yes”. In 2008, Jeremy started
the Golden Hook company and set up the website. In the first year, they only sold 300 hats, but the company expanded
quickly. Soon after, in 2010, Golden Hook employed 20 grandmas. Three years later, in 2012, a famous shop
introduced the hats to Tokyo—Japanese people loved the grandma’s hats. In the future, Jeremy’s goal is to have
Golden Hook Grandmas all over the world.
With Golden Hook, everyone wins. The customers get excellent hats. The grandmas get money, and something
interesting to do. And Jeremy? Jeremy is 25, and the CEO of am international company.
