How to keep fit
RunningRunning will help you lose weight faster than any other activity. It also strengthens (加强) your
heart, lungs, and leg muscles (肌肉). But it can hurt your joints (关节). If you feel ache in your
knees, you need to stop and choose a different activity.
Walking
Walking puts less stress on the body than running. But you need to get your heart beating faster
to see results. This means you’ll need to walk fast. Walking can also help you lose weight.
Swimming
Swimming is a great way to strengthen different parts of your body. But it is not a good way to
lose weight. The water in a swimming pool is cooler than our body temperature. The body
naturally protects itself from the cold by keeping fat.

Grandpa’s words made Nick feel a little better. But he still felt mad at himself.

little secret, Nick. We’re the same. We like to do things, make things and have fun! That’s why we sometimes
forget things.”“But Grandpa, how did you stop forgetting? How can I stop forgetting?” Nick asked.

lap(大腿).”
“I saw it!” said Nick. “I always wondered why you did that!”

CWe’ve all been in conversations where we’ve known that the other person wasn’t really paying attention.
According to the University of Missouri, 45% of communication is listening, and yet most people remember only
25% to 50% of the information they hear. Whether you’re in a classroom, a business setting, or a relationship,
failing to hear 75% what’s said to you is sure to lead to big problems. Active listening helps solve them.
What is Active Listening?
It means more than listening to the words that are said. Instead, you think about what you hear, and try to find
the purpose, and emotion from the speaker. Active listening requires paying attention. If you’re watching TV or
looking at your phone while someone is talking, you’re not actively listening.
The other side of active listening is making sure the other person knows that you’re doing so. Signs like eye
contact and replying with insightful (有深刻见解的) comments are important.
Why Active Listening Matters?
Verbal (言语的) communication is very important in every part of life. Active listening can help you
communicate better, reduce misunderstandings, and build more successful family or working relationships.
For example, family members often have bad listening habits. They don’t pay attention to what is said because
they know what is coming next. They hear what they expect to hear, instead of what family members actually say.
Active listening makes it possible to solve this problem.
Learning How to Listen
Active listening takes practice. Here are a few tips on improving your listening skills:
Pay attention! Put down your phone and make eye contact with the person talking to you. Make notes in mind
about the speaker’s main point. Why are they telling you this? How does the speaker feel about what they’re
saying? Don’t think about answering?
Show that you’re listening. The speaker can tell if you’re paying attention. Make eye contact, nod when you
need to, and give small comments like “yes” and “huh”. But don’t repeat something they’ve just said. This might
seem like a good way to show that you’re listening, but it can derail (使脱轨) the conversation.
Offer feedback (反馈) When the opportunity comes up, you’ll be able to offer proper feedback on what was
said. This might take the form of reflecting on what was said, asking follow-up questions, of offering your own
viewpoint.
33. According to the passage, which one can be active listening?
A. Asking some questions before listening.
B. Listening to someone while watching TV.
C. Thinking about what you hear while listening.
D. Guessing what the speaker will say before listening.34. Active listening is important because ________.
A. it changes people’s listening habits completely
B. it helps people to communicate with others better
C. it makes communication important in every part of life
D. it ensures people don’t make mistakes in business settings
35. What can we know from the passage?
A. Nodding often in the conversation can help you listen actively.
B. Asking follow-up questions is not as good as offering points of view.
C. Repeating what’s said by the speaker means you are an active listener.
D. Paying attention in the conversation means more than just listening to the words.
D
We can’t control everything that happens to us. We can’t control where our families came from, how much we
will pay for school next fall, or how others might treat us. But there is one thing we can control: how we
respond(回应) to what happens to us. And that is what counts! This is why we need to stop worrying about things
we can’t control and start worrying about things we can.
Look at the picture. The inner circle is our circle of control. It includes things we have control over —
ourselves, our personality, our choices, and our response to whatever happens to us. Outside the circle of control is
the circle of no control. It includes the thousands of things we can’t do anything about.
Now, what will happen if we spend our time and energy worrying about things we can’t control, like a rude
comment(评价), a past mistake, or the fact that it’s raining on a good hair day? You guessed it! We’ll feel even
more out of control, as if we were hurt. For example, if your sister is angry with you and you’re always
complaining(抱怨) about her weakness, that won’t do anything to fix the problem. It’ll only cause you to blame(归
咎于) your problems on her and lose power yourself. Don’t listen to the rude comment, avoid making the mistake
next time, and get an umbrella for the rain. You are the star of your own life. Focus(关注) on what you can
influence.
Renatha told me a story that explains this point. A week before her upcoming volleyball game, she learned that
the mother of a player on the other team had made fun of Renatha’s volleyball skills. Instead of paying no attentionto the comments, Renatha became angry and spent the rest of the week thinking about it. When the game arrived,
her only goal was to show to this woman that she was a good player. To make a long story short, Renatha played
poorly, spent much of her time on the bench, and her team lost the game. She was so focused on something she
couldn’t control that she lost control to the only thing she could control — herself.
Proactive(积极型的) people focus on the things they can control. By doing so they experience inner peace and
are primed for whatever comes their way. They learn to live with the many things they can’t do anything about,
even to smile and laugh about them. They may not like them, but they know it’s no use worrying.
36. Why did Renatha play poorly?
A. Because she was thinking about her mistakes.
B. Because she was made fun of during the match.
C. Because she was overtired after the hard training.
D. Because she cared too much about others’ comments.
.
37 What does the underlined part “are primed for” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A. care for B. wait for C. are ready for D. are sorry for
38. What is probably the best title of the passage?
A. Out of control, out of date B. We can control only one thing
C. The circle of no control D. We must learn how to control
阅读短文,根据短文回答问题 。
Self-images are our own mind’s pictures of ourselves. These images(形象)include the way we look, the
way we act, the way we talk and the way we think. When we find that believing in ourselves is a bit hard, it is time
we build positive self-images and learn to have happy lives.
Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unluckily, most
of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way we think about ourselves is the key
to change our self-images and our whole world.
The best way to destroy a passive self-image is to step back and decide to pay attention to our successes. That
is, make a list if we need to, but write down all of the great things we do every day. Don’t allow doubts to happen
on us.
It very well might be that we are experiencing negative self-images because we can’t move past the weakness
that we see about ourselves. Well, make a change of it as our primary tasks. If we think we’re silly because we
aren’t good at math, find someone to help us. If we think we’re weak because we can’t run a mile, get more
practice. But remember, what we think doesn’t mean it’s true.
The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that our images are far from the goals, and toactively make ourselves believe that we have positive personalities. Changing the way we think and working on
those we need to improve will go a long way to create new positive self-images. When we can pat ourselves on the
back, we’ll know we’re well on our way.
