For example, some people have the “retirement blues”(退休忧虑) after they leave their jobs. In a new study about how Americans spend their time, the researchers found that the levels of well-being- health and happiness were usually higher for people with more free time, but only up to a point. People with two hours of free time a day reported they felt better than those who had less time. But people who had five or more hours of free time a day said they felt worse. So the free-time “sweet spot” might be two to three hours per day, the findings reported. “While too little time is bad, having more time is not always better,” said Marissa Sharif, a professor at The Wharton School. How to decide this “sweet spot” partly has to do with how people spend the free time they have. In an online experiment, researchers asked participants(参与者)to think about having 3.5 to 7 free hours per day, and spending that time doing “productive”(富有成效的) things, like exercising, or doing “unproductive” activities, like watching TV. Participants believed they wouldn’t have a great sense of well-being if they had a lot of free time during the day—but only if they used it unproductively. The experiment shows that being focused on productive activities in the free time brings people happiness, and it can be good for people’s mental health. In other words, how people use their free time matters, Sharif said. Of course, you are the one to decide what feels “productive”. The point of all of this is self-care, and most productive activities can be easy and fun. Doing a bit of low-key(低强度的)exercise, like walking, can help reduce stress. Free-time activities like reading or cooking can also put people in a state of flow. “In cases when people do find themselves with a large amount of free time, such as retirement or having left a job,” Sharif said, “our results show that these people would benefit from spending their newfound time with purpose(目标).” 26. What did the researchers ask the participants to do in the online experiment? A. To reduce stress by doing a bit of low-key exercise like walking. B. To do productive and unproductive things in their free time every day. C. To care about themselves when they do productive and purposeful activities. D. To think about spending free time doing productive and unproductive things. 27. The expression “put people in a state of flow” in Paragraph 4 probably means ________. A. leave people sad and helpless B. drive people to feel stressful C. make people focused and happy D. encourage people to better themselves 28. What can we learn from the passage? A. People with less than two hours of free time always feel the most healthy. B. People would be happy if they do productive activities in their free time.C. Some busy people would find a new job someday by being productive. D. Some retired people feel sad because they can’t care for themselves. 【答案】26. D 27. C 28. Doing a bit of low-key(低强度的)exercise, like walking, can help reduce stress.”可知,这里说的是在闲 暇时间专注于生产性活动会给人们带来幸福感,对人们的心理健康也有好处,所以短语“put people in a state of flow”指的是“让人们专注和快乐”,故选C。 【28题详解】 主旨大意题。根据“The experiment shows that being focused on productive activities in the free time brings people happiness, and it can be good for people’s mental health. These videos can be about almost everything, from personal lives to the latest news. As of February 2021, TikTok has around 1.1 billion users worldwide. Almost 60% of the users are between the ages of 16 and 24. Then, what’s so great about this app that it wins such popularity among young people? For one thing, most videos on TikTok last only 15 seconds. Sometimes it feels as if a 15-second video can make you satisfied and laugh harder than a one-hour TV show or movie. That’s exactly what TikTok expects, and it is a big attraction for people looking for fun for a few minutes during the busy days. The algorithm(算法)of the app is another reason. Whenever you open the app, the first page you see is the“For You” page. Algorithm serves up the new videos that users may get interested in on the “For You” page. If you “heart” the videos you love, similar ones will keep showing up as you scroll down(滑动)the “For You” page. TikTok also encourages everyone to become a creator. Users can make videos in whatever way they want. With the countless number of users, one can only hope their video appears on the “For You” page of many other users. That encourages video creators to keep producing more. As TikTok has grown, the different kinds of videos on the app catch young people in a web of addiction(上 瘾). Some think the overuse of the app is because of the same experience you find yourself in while watching videos. To some, it can be like hearing a story or a joke from a friend through a screen. It’s even more exciting when you realize that the people on the screen are from all around the world. Overall, I think the addiction to TikTok has led many young people to get carried away. You may find yourself spending an hour or two on hundreds of short videos without realizing it. While it’s mainly used for fun, it also takes up too much time. “Tik-tok” is the sound of a clock, alluding(影射)to how fast time passes when you’re on the app. 29. According to the passage, why do most videos on Tiktok last only 15 seconds? A. Because TV shows or movies are harder to understand. B. Because short videos are easier to be created and shared by users. C. Because TikTok hopes people get fun in a short time on busy days. D. Because creators can’t show long videos on social media platforms. 30. What can we learn from the passage? A. Algorithm of TikTok helps its users to find the videos they like on the app. B. The same kind of videos keep showing up as soon as a user opens the app. C. Users of TikTok produce more videos to encourage creativity of young people. D. Videos will appear on the “For You” page of many users right after being created. 31. What’s Paragraph 6 mainly about? A. Why young people overuse TikTok. B. When TikTok started to become popular. C. What young people can learn from TikTok. D. How TikTok catches young people’s attention. 32. What does the writer probably agree with? . A It is necessary for young people to use TikTok for fun. B. It is a safe and fast way to get information from TikTok. C. Young people can easily get famous by creating TikTok videos.D. Young people can find it hard to control the time spent on TikTok. 【答案】29. And then on June 23rd, 2021, the happy news came: Shin Shin had given birth not to one baby, but two. Yutaka Fukuda, the zoo director, said the twin births were a welcome surprise. “When the first one was born, I was excited,” he said during a news conference(新闻发布会)Wednesday morning. “When I received a report on the second, I was shocked and surely happy.” A zoo spokesperson, Naoya Ohashi, said that when pandas have twins, they usually raise(养育)just one of them, so zookeepers make sure the mother feeds one while the other stays in an incubator(恒温箱). They plan to change the babies from time to time so that they both experience a natural diet. Tokyo planned to return Shin Shin to China in February. But Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, asked China to extend(延长) her stay by five years, because he was afraid that without pandas, there would be fewer visitors atthe zoo. The Ueno Zoo reopened earlier in June after a five-month shutdown because of the pandemic(疫情). There are around 1, 800 giant pandas in the wild in China, as well as around 500 raised by humans around the world. China’s practice of giving pandas to other countries started more than 1, 000 years ago. Chinese Empress Wu Zetian sent two pandas in 685 to Emperor Tenmu of Japan. Today, China gives pandas to other countries and allows them to keep pandas for ten years. And all descendants(后代)still belong to China. Among 40 students in my class, three fifths of them spend less than 3 hours exercising every week. 7 students spend about 3 to 5 hours a week doing sports while only 9 students spend over 5 hours a week on sports. Every week, 2 students stay up late for 4 to 6 nights. 6 of my classmates stay up late for 1 to 3 nights. The rest of the students never stay up late. I’ve taken countless wrong turns and dead ends on my walks in town. and sometimes even in restaurants. So I decide to give my navigation skills a much-needed boost. But is that even possible? How do we find our way around According to scientists, people navigate in one of two ways--spatial(空间的)or egocentric(自我中心 的)-although the two ways can be used interchangeably. Spatial navigators sec the bigger picture and always know where they are in relation to key landmarks. They keep building mental maps and using them. So, they rarely get lost. Egocentric navigators, meanwhile, often rely on detailed directions and local landmarks to break a journey into smaller parts: walk 200 meters, tum left at the post office, and so on... But they can get into trouble if a road is closed or a landmark is no longer there. Helpfully, the part of the brain associated(有关的) with navigation grows to match our mental maps. A study discovered that the taxi drivers in London have more grey matter (脑灰质) than other drivers. Their brains appear to “grow” while they are asked to learn 25,000 street names and the locations of major attractions. See? You can improve your sense of direction. You just need to work at it. 2 Nowadays, of course, Sat Nav(卫星导航) like GPS can make navigation easy for people. But if you really want to improve your sense of direction, it’s a good idea to put the Sat Nav away. Drivers who follow step-by-step GPS instructions may even fail to notice they’ve been past some places twice from different directions. Studying a larger map before you set out, on the other hand, does have its benefits, because memory of the route is more likely to stick in your mind. It also allows you to get a sense of that all-important bigger picture. Don’t just look where you’re going Staying alert is key, too. It’s important to notice what’s around you-in all directions. Instead of staring straight ahead, make sure you look up, down and behind you as well. This will come in useful when you’re doing the journey in reverse (相反)-even if it’s just finding your way back from the toilet in a restaurant. Another tip? Taking photographs or writing notes at key locations can help you remember better. Getting lost is nothing to be afraid of Finally, try to relax when you’re on unfamiliar ground. It’s all too easy to panic if you think you may be lost- but it will only prevent you from calmly working out which way to go. Besides, getting lost is one way to discovernew places and add more detail to that ever-growing mental map-both of which will help you become a better navigator in the long term. Lastly, a reminder for you-your sense of direction is a use-it-or-lose-it skill. If you only stick to the routes you already know, it’s never going to get any better. So now is the time to start exploring! 53. Why does the writer talk about taxi drivers in London in Paragraph 4? . A To stress the importance of a good sense of direction for people. B. To show how taxi drivers learn to know the way in London well. C. To compare drivers’ sense of direction with that of ordinary people. D. A good memory matters C. Maps don’t tell everything D. GPS makes people better navigators 55. The underlined expression “staying alert” in Paragraph 7 probably means ________. A. paying full attention B. taking good care C. having great patience D. holding little fear 56. What can we learn from the passage? A. People are born with great skills to navigate in their local areas. B. Studying maps can help people to improve the sense of direction. C. The best way for drivers to build a mental map is by getting lost in new places. D. It’s easier to find one’s way around if they learn step-by-step directions by heart. 【答案】53. D 54. B 55. A 56.
