Why would anyone want to write a poem? One reason to write a poem is to dig from yourself
some thought，feeling，comprehension or question that was in you，or in the world.Other forms
of writing，such as scientific papers，political analysis and journalism，attempt to record
something known.Poetry is a release of something previously unknown.
Poetry opens our eyes and offers increase of reach.We live so often on a lonely island，
separated from ourselves and others due to social or personal reasons.To step into a poem is to
agree to risk.Writing takes down all protections to see what steps forward.Poetry is a trick of
language，in which the writer is both magician and audience.You reach your hand into the hat and
surprise yourself with a rabbit or memory ， with unusual verbs or rhymes.Poems lead to
revolutions of being.Whatever the old order was，a poem will change it.
What we want from art is whatever is missing from the lives we are living and
making.Something is always missing，and so art-making is endless.
There is also the matter of connection.You can’t write an image，a metaphor(暗喻)，a
story，a phrase without approaching the shared world，without recognizing that your supposed
solitude(独处) is at every point touching some others.You can’t read a good poem without
recognizing your own face in the poet’s experience.It allows us to feel more strongly and
accurately what is already present.Then it expands that and expands us.
Does art change anything by its existence or non-existence? I’d argue that art，if it is
genuinely art，is a force for the good.That the rearrangement of words can reopen the potential of
both inner and outer worlds—I cannot say why I feel this to be true，except that I feel it so when I
read good poems.

Indeed loneliness is now widely recognized as a major public health problem.What is perhaps
less obvious is one answer to the problem：the healing power of poetry to make us feel more
connected to others.
Here things get personal.I first got involved in how poetry can support our emotional well-
being after I wrote a memoir ，Black Rainbow：Hone Words Healed Me—My Journey
Through Depression，in 2014 about how poetry helped me through two serious periods of
depression.Since then，I’ve been running Healing Words poetry sessions for mental health
charities and prisons，and have discovered first-hand the lovely feeling of companionship which
poetry can bring.
Poetry lets us connect with other people who have experienced similar emotions.We’re not
alone in our despair or delight.When we have a poem by our side，whether tucked into a bag or on
a bedside table，it feels like we’re being accompanied by a friend：an authorial arm is wrapped
around our shoulders.
I remember one woman starting to cry as she read Derek Walcott’s poem “Love After
Love” during a workshop held at my local hospital in West London.Fighting through tears，she
eventually said，“I feel understood.” Everyone in the room knew exactly what she meant.
She had ， in Walcott’s phrase ， struggled to “love again the stranger who was
yourself”．The poet’s invitation to “Sit.Feast on your life” was the comfort she needed，in
a language which spoke to her，to imagine loving herself in a way she had always found
hard.Poetry had worked its magic，unlocking a feeling of inner connection，and in turn a
connection to all of us sitting in the workshop.
Given my own experience，I think having a poem to keep us company can help us all feel a
greater sense of belonging.

Even successful poets may be frightened the first time they sit down to write a poem.This is
hardly unusual.But the good news is that once ideas begin to flow ，the craft of poetry is
remarkably satisfying.__1__
Don’t be absorbed in your first line.If you don’t feel you have exactly the right words to
open your poem，don’t give up there.__2__ The opening line is just one component of an overall
piece of art.Don’t give it more outsized importance than it needs.
Accept tools.If a rhyming dictionary will help you complete a poem，you should definitely

in an unrhymed form like free verse，and more challenging in poetic forms that have strict rules
about rhyme.

My husband and I enjoy seeing life through the eyes of our children.It’s amazing to watch as
they discover their world.
While we were outdoors last summer enjoying the sunshine，our oldest daughter，Kaytlin，
called me to the doorway.Beneath the steps was a baby red squirrel.
We watched it from a distance，not wanting to disturb it or scare off its mother.But after a
long wait—and looking all around our house for signs of a nest or a mother—we realized the tiny
squirrel was lost.
Shaking terribly，he was weak，thin，and hungry.We tried to find an expert to help，but the
Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website showed that there were no wildlife experts in our area.After
some quick research，we concluded that the best way to give the squirrel a fighting chance was to
care for him ourselves.So a trip to the local store for milk and supplies was in order.More research
taught us how much to feed him，how to estimate his age，how and when to wean(断奶) him，
and that we should let him go as soon as he could survive on his own.
Our daughters and I took turns in feeding “Squirt” ． Kaytlin took on the most
responsibility.She taught him to eat from a bottle，and she woke in the night for his feeds.
To our relief，Squirt soon became healthy and strong.Within a few weeks he became more
active.He would chatter(吱吱叫) for his next meal，playfully go around the girls，and lie down on
them for sleep.It wasn’t long before he was weaned onto solid food and reintroduced to the wild.
His first few visits to the great outdoors were funny.Just like a child，he would play in the
grass for a bit and then run back to Kaytlin for safety.Soon she had him climbing trees and finding
nest material.
