Formative assessment evaluates students' performance, achievements, and the emotions,

策略等方面的发展做出评价。
Its aim is to motivate students, help them effectively regulate their learning, and foster a
senseofaccomplishment and confidence, promotingcooperation.

Unlike summative assessments, formative assessments focus more on the learners’ needs

4. English Subject Core Competencies 英语学科核心素养
The core competencies achieved through the learning of a school subject is the concentrated
reflection of the educational value of the subject, which consists of correct values and attitudes,
indispensable qualities, and key abilities. The core competencies achieved through the English
subject includelanguage ability, cultural awareness, thinkingcapacity, and learning ability.
学科核心素养是学科育人价值的集中体现,是学生通过学科学习而逐步形成的正确价
值观、必备品格和关键能力。英语学科核心素养主要包括语言能力、文化意识、思维品质和
学习能力。
2 Languageability
Language ability isthe abilityto understand and expressmeaning in social contextsby wayof
listening, speaking, reading, viewing, and writing. Language ability also includes language
awareness and a feel for language developed in the course of learning and using English.The
English language ability constitutes a foundation for developing the English
subject core competencies.The development of language ability entails the
improvement in cultural awareness, thinking capacity, and learning ability,
which will help students broaden their international horizons, enrich their
ways of thinking, and participate in cross-cultural communication.
语言能力指在社会情境中,以听、说、读、看、写等方式理解和表达意义的能力,以及
在学习和使用语言的过程中形成的语言意识和语感。英语语言能力构成英语学科核心素养的
基础要素。英语语言能力的提高蕴含文化意识、思维品质和学习能力的提升,有助于学生拓

Culturalawareness
Cultural awareness consists of an understanding of Chinese and
foreign cultures,recognition of excellent cultures, and cross-cultural cognition, attitudes, and
behaviors which students demonstrate in the context of globalization.Cultural
awareness reflects the value orientation of the English subject core competencies.The
development of cultural awareness helps students enhance their national identity and patriotism,
increase their cultural confidence, cultivate a sense of community with a shared
future for mankind, learn to enhance self-cultivation and function properly in society,
and thus become educated and responsiblepersons.
文化意识指对中外文化的理解和对优秀文化的认同,是学生在全球化背 下表现出的
跨文化认知、态度和行为取向。文化意识体现英语学科核心素养的价值取向。文化意识的培
育有助于学生增强国家认同和家国情怀,坚定文化自信,树立人类命运共同体意识,学会做
人做事,成长为有文明素养和社会责任感的人。
Thinking capacity
Thinking capacity refers to students' skills employed in thinking and the quality of their
thinking in terms of logicality, criticality, and innovativeness.Thinking capacity represents the
cognitive aspect of the English subject's core competencies.Cultivating thinking capacity helps
students enhance their ability to analyze and solve problems, observe and understand the world
from a cross-cultural perspective, and make correct valuejudgments on things.
3思维品质指思维在逻辑性、批判性、创新性等方面所表现的能力和水平。思维品质体现
英语学科核心素养的心智特征。思维品质的发展有助于提升学生分析和解决问题的能力,使
他们能够从跨文化视角观察和认识世界,对事物作出正确的价值判断。
Learningability
Learning ability refers to students' awareness and ability to use and adjust English learning
strategies actively and expand English learning channels so as to increase the efficacy ofEnglish
learning.Learning ability paves the way for students to develop the English
subject core competencies.Developing learning ability helps students manage
their English learning autonomously, develop good learning habits, acquire
learning resources through multiplechannels, andincreaselearning efficacy.
学习能力指学生积极运用和主动调适英语学习策略、拓宽英语学习渠道、努力提升英
语学习效率的意识和能力。学习能力构成英语学科核心素养的发展条件。学习能力的培养
有助于学生做好英语学习的自我管理,养成良好的学习习惯,多渠道获取学习资源,自主、 高

5. How to cultivate students' English subject core competencies 如何
培养学生的英语学科核心素养?
According to the New English Curriculum Standard, our English teaching should aim to
cultivate students' English subject core competencies which include language ability, learning
ability, thinking capacity, and cultural awareness. As a teacher, I will cultivate students' English
subject core competencies from thefollowing aspects.
根据新课标,我们的英语教学应以培养学生的英语学科核心能力为目标,包括语言能力
、学习能力、思维能力和文化意识。作为一名教师,我将从以下几个方面培养学生的英语学
科核心素养。
First, before the class, I will take students' actual language level and learning needs as a
departure point and make reasonable and feasible teaching plans which pave the way for the
effective teaching process ofcultivation.
首先,在课前,我会以学生的实际语言水平和学习需求为出发点,制定合理可行的教学
计划,为培养学生的有效教学过程铺平道路。
Secondly, during the class, I will adopt the activity-based approach to English learning.
Real contexts will be built up based on their life experience and teaching materials which can
4stimulate students' active participation and make students use the language knowledge in real
contexts to comprehend meaning, convey information, and express feelings and opinions, thus
cultivating their language abilities and thinking capacity. Besides, I will incorporate cultural
knowledge into language learning and fully explore the cultural and educational values expressed
in the texts to help them transform cultural knowledge into internalized cognition, behavior,
character, and correct values.
其次,在课堂上,我将践行英语学习活动观,根据学生的生活经验和教材,建立真实的
语境,激发学生的主动参与,使学生在真实的语境中运用语言知识来理解意义,传递信息,

After class, creative, close-to-life, and hierarchical homework will be assigned toconsolidate

56. The Activity-based Approach to English Learning 英语学习活动
观
The activity-based approach to English learning advocates that students learn English through
a series of integrated, relevant, and practical theme-based activities, where they undergo learning
processes such as perceiving and understanding, applying and practicing, and transferring
andcreating.
英语学习活动观主张学生通过一系列综合的、相关的、实践的主题活动来学习英语,在
这些活动中经历感知和理解、应用和实践、迁移和创造等学习过程。
When doing these activities, students use their existing knowledge, explore the meaning of
texts of different types, and analyze and solve problems. Thus the students make progress in
learning language knowledge, developing language skills, deepening their cultural understanding,
developing multiple thinking skills, forming positive values, and utilizing learning strategies.
Thisprocess is not only an integrated development process of learning languageknowledge and
language skills, but also a continuous process of enhancing cultural
awareness, improving thinking capacity, andimproving learning ability.
在进行这些活动时,学生会运用他们已有的知识,探索不同类型文本的含义,并分析和
解决问题。因此,学生能在学习语言知识、发展语言技能、加深文化理解、发展多种思维能

67. How to conduct the activity-based approach to English learning?
The activity-based approach to English learning advocates that students
learn English through a series of integrated, relevant, and practical theme-based activities,
where they undergo learning processes such as perceiving and understanding,
applying and practicing, and transferring and creating. To be specific, I will conduct the
activity-based approach following thefollowingaspects.
英语学习活动观主张学生通过一系列综合的、相关的、实际的主题活动来学习英语,在
活动中经历感知与理解、应用与实践、迁移与创造等学习过程。具体来说,我将从以下几
个方面进行活动式教学。
Firstly, in the learning process of perceiving and understanding, I will activate students'
existing knowledge and experience, prepare students with the necessary language and cultural
background knowledge and lead them to the problem to be solved. Based on this, to solve the
problem, teachers should encourage students to obtain new knowledge from texts, establish a
connection between the information through sorting, summarizing, and integrating information,
form new knowledge, and comprehend and understand the meaning and
cultural valueorientation ofthe text.
首先,在感知和理解的学习过程中,我将激活学生现有的知识和经验,为学生准备必
要的语言和文化背景知识,并引导他们进入要解决的问题。在此基础上,为了解决问题,

Then, in the process of applying and practicing, students are guided to
participate inactivities to describe, interpret, analyze, andjudge following the themes and the
newly formed knowledge structure, to gradually realize the internalization of language and
cultural knowledge, consolidate new knowledge structure, promote the automation of language
use,and help students turn knowledge into ability.

Last but not least, in the process of transferring and creating, a related context will be
created for students to solve problems by using new knowledge and autonomous, cooperative,
and inquiry-based learning methods and conducting multiple thinking where they can express
7opinions, emotions, and attitudes, reflect correct values, achieve deep learning, and transform
abilitiesintocompetencies.
最后,在传授和创造的过程中,要为学生创设相关的情境,让学生利用新知识和自主、
合作、探究的学习方法解决问题,进行多元思考,在此过程中,学生可以表达观点、情感和
态度,体现正确的价值观,实现深度学习,将能力转化为素养。

8. The six components of the curriculum content 课程内容六要素
The content of the English curriculum is the basis for developing students' subject core
competencies, which consists of six components:thematic contexts, text types, language
knowledge, cultural knowledge, language skills and learning strategies. The six components ofthe
curriculum content are interconnected. To be specific, all language learning activities should be
carried out in a certain thematic context around different types of texts. In the process ofsolving
problems, students learn to acquire, analyze, and integrate language and cultural knowledge,
deepen their understanding of how language works, appreciate texts, compare and explore
cultural differences, and extract cultural essence. At the same time,byusing the learnedlanguage,
students learn how to express personal intentions, opinions and attitudes creatively. When doing
these activities, students also learn how to improve the efficacy ofunderstanding and expression
byusingvarious learning strategies.
英语课程内容是培养学生学科核心能力的基础,它包括六个部分:主题背景、文本类型
、语言知识、文化知识、语言技能和学习策略。课程内容的六个组成部分是相互联系的。具
体来说,所有的语言学习活动都应该在一定的主题背景下围绕不同类型的文本进行。在解决

These six interconnected curriculum components contribute to the cultivation of students'
corecompetencies and are incorporated into the activity-based approachto English learning.

89. Thematic context 主题语境
The theme provides a thematic scope or a thematic context for language learning. Students'
exploration of thematic meaning should be the most important part of their language learning,
which directly affects the degree of text comprehension, the level ofthinking development, and
the effectiveness of language learning. There arethree thematic contexts:man and self,man and
society, and man and nature. When designing thematic exploration activities, teachers should
make efforts to stimulate students' interest in participating in the activities,
mobilize their existing experience on the theme, and help them construct
and improve new knowledge structures, thus deepening their understanding of the theme.
Through a series of comprehensive and relevant language learning and thinking
activities, students develop the ability of understanding and express,
pursue deep learning of the theme, construct new concepts, experience
different lives, enrich life experiences and ways of thinking, establish correct world views, life
views, and values,thus to achieve theultimategoal ofunity ofknowledge and action.
主题为语言学习提供了一个主题范围或主题语境。学生对主题意义的探索应该是他们
语言学习中最重要的部分,它直接影响到文本理解的程度,思维发展的水平,以及语言学
习的效果。主题语境有三种:人与自我、人与社会、人与自然。教师在设计主题探究活动

10. Text Types 语篇类型
Text types refer to different types oftexts such as narration, argumentation, exposition, and
practical writing, as well as spoken or writtenmultimodaltexts, such as audio and videos.
文本类型是指叙述、论证、论述、实用写作等不同类型的文本,以及音频、视频等口
语或书面多模态文本。
Being exposed to and learning different types of texts, familiarizing themselves with the
