一、阅读单选
Do you ever find yourself standing in front of rubbish bins, not sure whether the piece of
waste in your hand is recyclable or not? To solve this problem, four Hong Kong high school
students have invented a smart rubbish bin that uses AI to sort(分类) the waste. The students
named the bin Waste Collection Point.
Connected to a computer, the bin uses a camera to tell the kind of the waste it receives
and sorts it into plastic, paper, glass, or other kinds. To make sure the bin can sort waste
correctly, the team tested every product in the school shop and took at least500 pictures of
each one. “To train the AI, we had to take many photos from different angles(角度), so it has
a better rate of accuracy,” said one of the students who built the AI system.
The idea of the smart bin was born two years ago, when the students were in Grade Ten.
At that time, people from the city crowded into their village because of the COVID-19. They
left behind a lot of rubbish and caused more pollution.
“All the bins were full, and there was even rubbish on the mountain,” the students
recalled, “Every weekend, we had to join the villagers in picking up the waste.”
The students decided to develop a special recycling bin that would encourage people to
protect the environment. Although school ended at 2 pm, the team would continue to work on
their invention until 6 or 7 pm at school. Even when their school was closed last year, they
would still meet and work together online.
“Our bin is now in its third generation(代). Before graduation, we hope it can be widely
used in the city.” The students said, “Then it will be easier than ever for people to recycle and
protect our environment.”

On Nov.16, seven astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) woke up to an
alarm (警报). A Russian missile (导弹) test had just bombed a satellite into more than 1,500
pieces of space debris (残骸). Some got very close to the ISS.
NASA says space debris like this can travel at more than 28,000 km/h. That’s much
faster than a bullet (子弹) (about 3,500 km/h). Even a pea-sized piece of debris could “wipe
out” a space station or kill an astronaut if he or she is doing a spacewalk, says Live Science.
Since the 1950s, humans have sent thousands of rockets and satellites into space. Many
are still there, and we now face an ever-increasing problem of space rubbish. In 2006, for
example, National Geographic reported that a tiny piece of space rubbish hit the ISS, taking a
small piece of glass out of a window. In June of this year, a piece of debris ran into one of the
station’s robotic arms, which are just like the arms of a robot, and left a hole.
Scientists are trying different ways to deal with the problem. One way is to use a huge
net. In 2018, the UK’s Survey Space Center caught some space rubbish with a net in an
experiment. It first found the debris, and then collected it with a net and a harpoon (鱼叉).
Another way is to use robotic arms. Clear Space 1, the European Space Agency’s task to
clean space rubbish, is going to be sent into space in 2025. It will use robotic arms to catch
debris. This plans to throw the debris into Earth’s atmosphere (大气层), where it will burn up
as it falls because of strong friction (摩擦).
16.The bomb of the Russian missile mainly causes ________ according to the article.
A.plants B.soil C.food D.space debris
17.According to NASA, space debris moves ________ as fast as a bullet.
A.eight times B.nine times C.seven times D.six times
18.What happens to a space station if it gets “wiped out”?
A.It gets cleaned. B.It gets rebuilt. C.It gets broken. D.It gets old.
19.The best ways to deal with space debris is ________ according to the article.
a. throwing it away into the planetb. throwing it into the sun to burn up
c. collecting it with nets and harpoons
d. throwing it into Earth’s atmosphere to burn up
A.ad B.cd C.ab D.bd
20.What can we infer from Paragraph 3-4?
A.There is nothing we can do to deal with space debris.
B.The astronauts are quite safe in space even there is space debris.
C.More and more tasks are failing because we don’t want to cause space rubbish.
D.Thousands of old rockets and satellites are turning into space rubbish for years.

with a net and a harpoon (鱼叉).”以及“This plans to throw the debris into Earth’s
atmosphere (大气层), where it will burn up as it falls because of strong friction (摩擦).”可知,
处理太空垃圾的两个办法是:用网和鱼叉收集太空残骸,以及把太空残骸扔进地球大
气层燃烧掉;c和d正确。故选B。
20.【解析】推理判断题。根据“Since the 1950s, humans have sent thousands of rockets
and satellites into space. Many are still there, and we now face an ever-increasing problem of
space rubbish.”可知,人类已经发送了很多火箭和卫星,现在它们仍然在太空中,太空
中的垃圾越来越多,由此推测这些火箭和卫星多年来都在变成太空垃圾。故选D。One day, Paula Ma was walking along Castle Island’s beach. She found there were lots
of plastic(塑料)pieces in the sea and some were too small to pick up. She began to think
about how to solve the problem.
First, she did a survey. The result showed there were already 150 million tons of plastic
in the sea, and every year there would be another 8 million tons. She realized something must
be done. So she decided to invent a robot that could work under water. She tried again and
again. At last her ROV came out. It could move through water and pick up plastic pieces,
especially the small ones.
With this ROV, Paula Ma took part in the Broadcom Masters competition. It was one of
the top STEM competitions. It’s for young students around the world. This year, more than
5,000 students were interested in the competition, but only a few got the chance. Paula Ma’s
ROV caught a lot of attention. It had a camera with three different kinds of lights. It could
find plastic pieces easily. Dana Yoerger, an expert, said, “The ROV is nicely done for a 12-
year-old girl. It’s very clever.”
In fact, Paula Ma is always learning to solve the world problems and her parents are
always supporting her. At the age of five, she began to go to workshops to learn engineering
skills. When she was asked about the future plan, she said, “I want to be an engineer because

The world uses about a thousand million (百万) tons of water a day. Water is a human
right and everyone should have their share. Yet more than 700 million people around the
world have trouble getting clean, safe water.
Treating wastewater is a good way to provide fresh water for us. And it also helps the
environment by keeping waste out of rivers and oceans. 80% of wastewater around the world
is not treated at all, and it is running into oceans. But now we have got the technology to treat
and reuse the wastewater.
While 75% of our planet is covered with water, only about 2% is fresh water—that
comes from rivers, lakes, ice and snow. The rest, 98% of the water, is in seas and oceans. It is
too salty to drink. Then desalination businesses come in. More than 19,000 factories have
been built around the world, mostly in coastal countries. They process (加工) more than 92
million tons of water every day. But the technology they use requires a lot of energy.
Scientists are working to create a less costly technology. They want to produce 20 times
more clean water and make sure everyone has enough. But for now, the world still faces each
day with not having enough water for everyone.
41.How many people have trouble in getting clean water around the world?
A.Under 10 million. B.Only 19 million.
C.About 92 million. D.Over 700 million.
42.Treating wastewater helps the environment by _____.A.storing waste in ice and snow B.letting waste run into oceans
C.keeping waste out of rivers and oceans D.sending waste to coastal countries
43.What does the underlined word "desalination" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.远洋运输 B.潮汐发电 C.食盐销售 D.海水淡化
44.At present, the technology to process water_____.
A.needs much energy B.saves much money
C.satisfies everyone D.causes pollution
45.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

Recently, a junior high school sent several students back home because they broke the
school uniform(校服)rules. Should students wear school uniforms? The Young World
magazine held a discussion on this topic(话题).
Kennedy: The school uniform is very important, because it always reminds me that I
am supposed to go out of my way to study hard. It also helps prevent school bullying(欺
凌). If everyone wears the same clothes, it is impossible to laugh at other people’s
clothing.
Manson: The uniform has to be earned(获得)through efforts. Students should start
school with no uniforms. As they make progress at school, they start wearing it. I always
think children need to be proud of their school. The uniform is important for that. So, make
students earn it! If they don’t perform well, they should not be allowed to get one.
Moorhead: In my opinion, kids don’t have to wear uniforms. There should be more
choices open to kids in education. They ought to develop their own independence and just be
themselves. Their personalities would be expressed through their own clothes at school. And
different dress could be one way of showing their understanding of beauty. Besides, they
make the school lively and colorful.
Patrick: I can see the advantages of wearing school uniforms. They play a veryimportant role in managing schools. However, a school should not depend heavily on
uniforms to improve students’ behaviors. Teaching them how to express themselves with
