you will need to build into a machine before it can be considered as a robot. A robot has these important
characteristics.
Sensing First of all, your robot would have to be able to sense the environment around it. Give your
robot sensors: light sensors (eyes), touch sensors (hands), chemical sensors (nose), hearing sensors (ears) and

When we watch movies about the future, we sometimes see robots. They are usually like human servants.

9Today there are already robots working in factories. Some can help to build cars, and they do simple jobs
over and over again. Fewer people will do such jobs in the future because they are boring, but robots will never
getbored.
Scientists are now trying to make robots look like humans and do the
same things as we do. Some robots in Japan can walk and dance. They are
fun to watch. However, some scientists believe that although we can make
robots move like people,it will bedifficultto make them reallythink like a
human. For example, scientist James White thinks that robots will never be
able to wake up and know where they are. But many scientists disagree with Mr. White. They think that robots

Anna Du was walking alongCastle Island’s beachin South Boston when shenoticed plastics were scattered
everywhere. She reached down to pick them up, and quickly realized there were many more tiny pieces than she
couldhandle.Soshebegantothinkaboutwhattodowiththeproblem.
Du dealt with the problem like any good scientist -- first, by doing a little research. That’s how she learned
that 8 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans every year, and there were 150 million tons of plastic there
already.
Then she got to work building something that could help ▲ the problem: a remote-operated vehicle (遥

With this robot, Anna Du took part in the Broadcom MASTERS Competition, one of the top science,

Leo—walk,flyandslackline(走绳)!
Most animals are limited to either walking, flying, or swimming, with a few luck ones whose abilities allow
them to cross over.Anew robot took inspiration (灵感) from them, and can fly like a bird just as well as it can
walk like a person.Italso happensto be able to skateboardand slackline, two skills mosthumans will never pick
up.
Described in a paper published this week in Science Robotics, the robot’s name is Leo, which is short for
Legs Onboard Drone. The name makes it sound like a drone (无人机), but it has a humanoid shape, with legs,
propeller thrusters (螺旋桨推进器) thatlook like arms, a“body” thatcontains its motors (马达)andelectronics,
andaprotectionhelmet.
Leo was built by a team at the California Institute ofTechnology (Caltech), and they were very interested in
how the robot would change between walking and flying. The team says that they studied the way birds usetheir
