Lucija: I’veheard London is amazing.
Kaveh:Yeah, theydospeak English. But theirEnglish isdifferent!
Lucija: You’re right. It is a little different. But with a few tips, you’ll be able to
manage.
Kaveh: There are key differences between the two “Englishes”. Most noticeably, the
vocabulary.
Lucija: British English and American English have different words that mean the
samething.
Kaveh: You can usually tell what someone is talking about through the conversation.
But it can betricky and fun to figureit out.
Lucija: Like saying “lift” instead of“elevator”.Or“tube” instead of“metro”.
Kaveh: Football instead of“soccer”.Flat instead of “apartment”.
Lucija:Wow!Wecan dothisall day.
Kaveh:And of course there are differences in spelling!
Lucija:Ah, yes.The British put a “u” in words likecolour –color, honour –honor,and
labour–labor.
Kaveh: Use “s” instead of “z” in words like realise – realize, organise – organize, and
analyse –analyze.
Lucija:And switch “er”with “re” inwords likefibre–fiber and centre –center.
Kaveh: Exactly! But the most important thing to remember is that British English and
American English are, after all, justEnglish.BritishEnglish American English
