After the high school entrance examination ended on June 17, 16-year-old Cao Chenzhe from Taizhou,
Jiangsu made a donation of 5,000 yuan to the Disabled Persons’ Federation (残疾人联合会) in Jiangsu to
help children. The money was for his brave act of using the Heimlich maneuver (海姆立克急救法) to save
a classmate’s life.
Cao clearly remembered that day. One evening in March, while having dinner at the school dining hall,
he noticed a classmate’s face turning purple as he tried hard to breathe.
“Oh no, something is stuck in his throat (喉咙)!” Cao quickly realized the problem and performed the
Heimlich maneuver. After trying many times, a large rice ball came out of the classmate’s throat.
Cao learned the Heimlich maneuver during a safety education class at Jiangyan Licai Experimental
School. “The teacher showed us the process in detail and we practiced with each other,” said Cao.
Heimlich’s technique requires the rescuer(救助者) to check if the victim is choking(窒息的). If he is
choking, it is suggested to give him several hard slaps (猛拍) on the back. Next, hug the choking victim
from behind. Then, the rescuer makes a fist(握拳) with his left hand in front of the choking victim’s
stomach, and holds the victim’s left wrist(手腕) with his right hand. Finally, the rescuer needs to give a
kind of quick squeeze (挤压) to the victim’s stomach until the problem object comes out. Sometimes the
object can fly out of the person’s mouth. He introduced his idea and it’s been used to save people ever since,
except those less than one year old.
Today, Cao’s school organizes safety education classes every month and encourages students to take
online courses on the Ministry of Education’s online safety education platform (教育部学校安全教育平
台). The vice principal (副校长) of Cao’s School, said that safety education should have different forms
such as competitions and role-playing activities. “The more kinds of activities our school holds, the more
engaged (参与的) the students will be,” he said.
When talking about safety education, Cao hoped students of his age to take it seriously. “Every
student should learn to protect themselves and others in a scientific way,” he said.

How do you define (定义) a film? Must a film be watched in a cinema? The answer from streaming
services (流媒体服务公司) such as Netflix, Apple TV+ and Iqiyi is no. These companies believe it doesn’t
matter how films are first shown to the public. A film can be seen on TV, a computer or a smartphone. But
many traditional film directors disagree with them. They insist the big screen is an important part of their
field. “If you release (发行) a film on TV, it’s a TV show,” director Steven Spielberg said. “If it’s a good
show, it would win a television award, but not a film award like an Oscar.”
The Oscar, however, seemed to give up the cinema rule. In 2022, the Oscar’s Best Picture Award went
to CODA. The film was released on Apple TV+, not in cinemas. Its success marked an important milestone
(里程碑) for the “little screen”.
Streaming services have tried to reshape the industry for years. Traditional film studios have started
showing films online and in cinemas at the same time. Some film have been available (可获得的) only in
certain streaming apps.
Still, some filmmakers believe that a film can’t be called a film unless it’s shown on the big screen.
“It’s a completely different experience,” they say. But more and more directors have waved a white flag.
The famous director, Martin Scorsese has worked with Netflix a few times. He is now making his next film
for Apple TV+. “Streaming services,” he says, “are becoming more and more attractive to people,
especially the young.”

The 24 Solar Terms is known as 24 jieqi in Chinese. On Nov 30, the United Nations added it into the
List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (人类非物质文化遗产). It’s international recognition
(认可) of an important part of Chinese culture that is thousands of years old. Now many people still use
“solar terms” as a guide for life.
Start of Spring(立春) means the beginning of spring. People clearly see that the daytime is becoming
longer and the weather is becoming warmer. Spring is the best season for kite-flying. It can help build one’s
health and prevent illness. Also, it is believed that if someone can make the egg stand on the first day of
Start of Spring, he will have good luck in the future. In many parts of China, people eat spring pancakes (春
饼), spring rolls (春卷), or a few mouthfuls of carrots.
End of Heat (处暑) begins on Aug 23 and ends on Sept 6 this year. Most areas across China will cool
down during the period. The tradition of eating duck during the End of Heat period is still popular in
China. There are many recipes for cooking duck such as roast duck, or cooked duck with lemon. For
Chinese fishermen, the period is a harvest season as the fishing ban (禁止) usually ends by this time of year.
__________ As the human body would fit a cooler season, people are easily getting tired during the season.
So get enough sleep, do more exercises and keep plants indoors to help.
By Autumn Equinox (秋分), most of the areas in China have entered the cool autumn. The
temperature also declines quickly and people feel colder and get ill easily. In this season, crab is delicious.
It helps clear heat inside the body. Qiucai (秋菜) is a kind of wild autumn vegetable. Some people in South
China go to pick qiucai in the wild. Then, they put qiucai into soup with fish.
Start of Winter (立冬) is the first solar term of winter, which means winter is coming and crops
harvested in autumn should be stored. “Medical Saint” Zhang Zhongjing saved many people in Henan
province. To drive away the cold and increase body heat, he put meat and herbs (草药) into an ear-shaped
skin. Since then, people have learned to make the food which become known as “dumpling”.

Are you an “I person” or an “E person”? These two
personality labels are widely discussed online. They are part of a
popular personality test called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator,
or MBTI. All the results have four letters, and there are 16
results in total. “I” and “E” refer to “introverted (内向的)” and
“extroverted (外向的)”, respectively.
If you’ve ever taken a Myers-Briggs personality test, but
you feel the results didn’t describe you at all. According to Vox’s Joseph Stromberg, “The test is completely
meaningless.”
Mr. Stromberg writes that the results of this test have not been supported by systematic psychological
experiments (心理实验). And most people don’t fit neatly into them. He writes, “there aren’t really pure
extroverts and introverts, but mostly people who fall somewhere in between.”
Even if someone is typically quiet, many online discussions suggest that an “I” person can still act
outgoing at times. For example, when an introverted person is with a group of introverted friends, they
might become more social like an “E” person. According to psychologists, this idea of changing
personalities is called “masking”. That is hiding your true personality in specific situations. “Human beings
want to feel they belong, and they might become people-pleasers to do so,” wrote the Master Class website.
Part of its appeal may be that most people just like taking a test. In a comment of Myers-Briggs at
Business Insider, Drake Baer writes, “When taking a personality test, you get the feeling of a-ha! Yes, I am
an introvert, so please don’t bother me. And that’s satisfying.”
The MBTI personality test may show something you don’t know about yourself and can even be a fun
ice-breaker question when meeting new friends. And that’s all it is – for fun. Knowing someone’s MBTI
result doesn’t mean you really know this person. Being able to put oneself in a category may be satisfying,
but those four letters of yours don’t define who you are.
1. What does Mr. Stromberg think of the MBTI personality test?
A. People can exactly locate their own personality.
B. The results are based on systematic experimentation.
C. It helps people get a better understanding of themselves.
D. It is unscientific, and the results don’t make much sense.
2. By giving the example in Paragraph 4, the author wants to stress _________.
A. It isn’t always easy to discover one person’s personality.
B. Even an introverted person can be extroverted at times.
初三英语试卷 第16页,共24页C. People may change their personalities in specific situations.
D. People usually try to please others to feel they belong.
3. What can we infer from the comment of Drake Baer?
A. MBTI is popular because people like taking a test.
B. People tend to find a sense of identity and belonging.
C. Most people may get satisfied while taking a personality test.
D. An introvert may not like to be disturbed by others.
4. The purpose of the passage is _________.
A. To introduce different results of the MBTI test.
B. To understand ourselves better through the MBTI test.
C. To show the advantages and disadvantages of taking the test.
D. To tell us not to label ourselves for the MBTI results.

The Law of the Jungle says very clearly. “when all wolf-cubs are old enough to stand on their feet,
their parents must show them to the Wolf Pack Council (狼群委员会). There is usually a Pack Council
once a month at full moon. No excuse is accepted if a grown adult wolf of the pack kills one of the
wolf-cubs before they kill their first deer.
When the four wolf-cubs could run a little, Father Wolf took them and Mowgli and Mother Wolf to the
Meeting Rock. Here, the hundred wolves of the Wolf-Pack met together.
The leader of the Pack Council was Akela, a great grey wolf. Each new wolf-cub came to stand in
front of him and Akela said, “Look well, O Wolves. Look well and remember!”
At the end, Father Wolf pushed Mowgli into the circle of wolves. Just at this time, an angry roar came
from behind the rocks. It was the voice of Shere Khan, “The man-cub belongs to me. Give him to me!
What do the wolves want with a man-cub?”
The Law of the Jungle says if there is a disagreement about the right of a cub to be part of the pack, he
must be spoken for by at least two members of the Pack who are not his father and mother.
Akela did not move but said only, “Look well! Who speaks for this man-cub? Two voices!”
No answers. Mother Wolf got ready for a fight.
There is only one other animal who can come to these wolf-meetings -- Baloo, the sleepy brown bear.
His job is to teach the Law of the Jungle to the wolf-cubs.
“I speak for the man-cub,” came Baloo’s deep voice. “Let him run with the Pack. I myself will teach
him.”
“We need another voice to speak for him.” said Akela.
Silently, another animal jumped down into the circle. It was Bagheera the panther, black as the night,
clever, strong, and dangerous.
“Akela, I know that I have no right to speak here. But I ask your permission to speak.” said Bagheera
softly, “The Law of the Jungle says it is possible to pay a price for the life of a cub. It is bad to kill a
man-cub. He cannot hurt you. Let him live with you, and I will give you a fat bull, newly killed, which lies
in the jungle not far away.”
The voices of the wolves replied quickly, “ Accept him, Bagheera! Where is the bull? ” “OK. Let him
run with the pack. Take us to the fat bull right now, please! ”
