6⁃year⁃old Jesse was playing in the field when he suffered an electric shock, leaving him
unconscious. He was rushed to the hospital. When he opened his eyes, he found both his arms
gone.
His mother was concerned with him. She was aware that Jesse couldn't depend on his
parents all his life. So she guided Jesse to learn to use his feet. To her delight, within three
months, Jesse could do many things with his feet, even write.
It was time for Jesse to start school. On the first day, he was laughed at by other kids.
Then Jesse surprised everyone that he wrote much more beautifully than the normal kids.
While walking, Jesse often fell because it was hard for him to keep balance without arms.
He practiced again and again until he made it to walk steadily. Then he could even run fast.
At the age of 10, Jesse became an athlete of the disabled track and field team of his city.
He practiced very hard. At the age of 14, he was able to run 400 meters in 56 seconds. And it
was hoped that he could compete for the national champion. However, the international track
and field rules suddenly changed and his event was cancelled.
No one's life is easy, especially for the disabled. But Jesse didn't lose heart. He changed to
swimming. He was talented and became a professional member at the age of 17 with the hope
of winning the qualification of entering an international competition. But just before the
competition, his old injury returned and he only got the sixth place, which meant he could go
no further in sports. He was at a great loss, wondering where his future was.

His father encouraged him to go back to high school for academic study after so
many years of sports life. It can be imagined that he had lost too much time on studies. In
the first English test, he only got 20 points. He was lost in thought. If he wanted to live a good
life, he had no other choice but to go to college. Thanks to his years of sports training, he
developed the spirit of never giving up. He regained his confidence and decided to meet the
challenge bravely.
Once making up his mind, Jesse threw himself into what he was seeking. His
father set a goal for him to rank 200 at the end of the first year. But he managed to rank 17 in
the following examination, which strengthened his confidence of achieving his final goal.
Then he got the first place in all the following exams until the college entrance examination,
and was admitted into a famous university. He not only has used his own struggle to open up
a broad voyage in life, but also is using his strength to help more young people realize their
dreams.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mai Lin wasn't doing well enough at school, or at least she wasn't satisfied with herself.
She wished she could do better.
“Let's review the material we learned in the last unit,” the history teacher said. “Who can
tell us what caused the War of 1812?” Mai Lin sat at her desk, staring ahead. She hoped the
teacher wouldn't call her name. They hadn't studied the War of 1812 at her old school and she
didn't know the answer.
“Alison?” the teacher asked instead. Oh, perfect, Mai Lin thought. Of course, Alison
would have the answer. She seemed to have all the answers. Alison was the most popular girl
in school—always surrounded by millions of friends. She was like a brilliant sun.
Mai Lin hadn't made one or two friends of her own so far. Her old school was small and
low⁃key, but a shy person like Mai Lin had a chance there. This new school, however, seemed
as big as an airport to Mai Lin, and it seemed very hard to get around in it. She still got lost
sometimes in the school.
Mai Lin frowned (皱眉) as Alison answered the teacher's question. Alison probably never
got lost, Mai Lin thought to herself. You could probably put Alison down in the middle of a
desert, and within five minutes she'd be able to tell you the best way to get home.
History class finally ended, and Mai Lin headed for the gym. The class had been playing
basketball. Alison, who was as tall and thin and attractive as a tree, was very good at it.
Beside her, Mai Lin felt like a very small and foolish ant. That day, however, the gym teacher
pointed to a thick rope hanging from the ceiling and said, “Everybody! You're going to climb
this rope today.”
注意:续写词数应为 150 左右。
Hearing the teacher's words, Mai Lin smiled.
Mai Lin stepped forward and got close to the rope.

One possible version:
Hearing the teacher's words, Mai Lin smiled. She knew what was coming. They'd
done lots of physical fitness training at her old school and she was quite good at rope
climbing. “Who's first?” the teacher asked. “Alison?” To Mai Lin's surprise, Alison turned as
pale as the moon and shook her head. “She's scared,” Mai Lin thought. “Perfect Alison was
scared.” Suddenly Mai Lin heard her own voice saying, “I'll do it.” Alison looked up at Mai
Lin in great surprise, and all the other classmates seemed surprised, too. The teacher nodded
and told Mai Lin to climb.
Mai Lin stepped forward and got close to the rope. She appeared calm but was
extremely excited. She climbed the rope very fast and reached the ceiling within what seemed
a few seconds, effortlessly. As she reached the top, she glanced down at her fellow students
below. Now it was Alison who appeared like a small ant. She saw Alison looking up, eyes
wide with admiration. Mai Lin clung to the top of the rope for a moment longer and then
headed down to join the class. Once she got on the ground, everybody cheered. Mai Lin knew
she would be different from that day on.

Kathy's family vacation to the beach was usually the highlight of her summer. This year,
however, her parents announced a new rule: no phones for the entire week.
“But my friends will be expecting updates about the trip,” Kathy complained. Kathy's
mom gave her a serious look. Unwillingly, Kathy handed her phone over and her mom locked
it away.
The drive to the beach house took most of the day. As they turned off the highway onto
country back roads, the clouds darkened. Rain started to pour. “Even more beautiful in the
rain,” her mother said. “What do you think, Kathy?” Kathy glared at her mom. “Beautiful,”
she muttered.
That night after dinner, Kathy wandered into the kitchen, where her father was washing
dishes. She gave her father a loving look and said in her sweetest voice, “Couldn't I have my
phone back, just for one second? Just so I can tell everyone what an amazing time I'm
having?”
“Can't,” he said. “It's not here. Remember?” Kathy was very annoyed. Having nothing
better to do, she examined the dusty bookcase in the living room. The books looked as dull as
the weather. On the top shelf, however, she spotted a puzzle. She took it, emptied the pieces
on the table, and began to sort them.
After what seemed like a few minutes, she looked up. It was past ten o'clock. She had
been working for almost two hours! She yawned. The puzzle was less than half done, but she
was exhausted. So, she went to bed.
When Kathy awoke the next morning, she jumped out of bed and threw open the curtains.
A blazing sun was rising over the blue ocean. The sky was cloudless. The scene reminded
Kathy of a photo that her friend Betty had recently sent her.
This view was even better. It would leave everyone speechless. Kathy dashed to her
bedside table and reached for her phone. But there was nothing there. She sighed. Still, she
wandered in front of the window, admiring the sunrise.

herself. Suddenly, the unfinished puzzle caught her attention. She felt a little excited and
buried herself in it once again. Every time the shapes met, Kathy was overwhelmed by
happiness. Soon, all that were left were a few gaps. She quickly put the remaining pieces into
place. The puzzle was completed!

Children are like sweet⁃sour candy; no matter who you are or where you are, they please
you. Laughter tickles, and innocence is their beauty which everyone adores. They are rich
with joy, and purity. Yesterday, a sweet scene occupied me.
It was a summer morning. Sun poured its rays on the earth like holy wine. I was waiting
for the shuttle at the bus station wearing my uniform, a white shirt with gray bottoms. Few
people arrived and some departed from the bus stop to their destination. In a while, there
came a young couple with their daughter.
The little girl was around 4 or 5 years old. As they arrived, the baby caught everyone's
attention with her little naughty things.
She was wearing a yellow dress. Yellow was giving her a fresh look just like a sunflower:
rise and shine. Her red curly hair was like cotton candy. The most eye⁃catching factor was her
big round eyes. All black and dense having the glimpse of spark to explore everything. She
was observing and scanning everything with her little black eyes.
There came an ice cream man. I could see immediately after the van played music; she
asked her mother for something, but she denied it. Then she requested her father, and he
politely refused. She tied her hands and sat on the footpath as the sign that she is offended.
Red apple cheeks increased her cuteness.
