(1)Who are included in this story?Where did the story happen? When did the
story happen? What happened in this story? How did they want to do to solve
the problem?
(2)How many aspects are included in the story? What are they?
WhenMrs.Mededith heard of
John’s idea,she thought it was a good one,too.”
(3)Did Mrs.Meredith agree with their idea ? What did they do to help
Bernard?
Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell
it.”
Bernard
(4)How is Bernard’s new business?What’sthe feeling of Bernard ? What’s the
feeling of those children?
On the fourth or fifth night,we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After
driving in vain for some time,Mom suddenly got a great idea:Why didn’t we find a house with
a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up a tent there? David and I became nervous.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him...he saw instantly that it
wasn’t a dog at all,but a wolf,quickly catching up with him.Mac’s heart jumped...he fired the
spray at the wolf.A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac’s relief,it fell back,
shaking its head. But a minute later...Then it...,tearing open his tent bag.He fired at the wolf a
second time,and again,it fell back...
The car abruptly stopped in front of him.“Get into the car.” Paul shouted at
Mac.Mac jumped off the bike and slid into the car without delay as the wolf was just two steps
away and was about to tear Mac into pieces. What a narrow escape!
But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark
again.Jane was so tired,hungry,and extremely frightened.She thought to herself,“If only I
had not quarrelled with Tom.Where is Tom? He must have made the emergency call. What I need
is enough courage. If I continue my spirits tomorrow,I will be likely to guide the helicopter.”
Lying beside the stream, she fell asleep very soon.Suddenly, she heard the shouts of tigers,
which made her scared to death. After she held her breath for a few minutes, everything was quiet
again. In the terrible darkness, she slept again.
Kelly is a nurse. Her kidney (肾脏) proved to be a perfect match for her cousin, Dana, who
is a teacher. Her kidney had worsened to the point where she required a transplant (移植). As
Kelly told Dana, “I’m in good health and I almost never get sick or ill. It seems that I can be a
donor for you.” Dana was wild with joy.
Later on a Thursday afternoon, after spending the first of two days undergoing tests to
confirm her kidney was a match for Dana, Kelly got a call from a Cleveland Clinic caregiver.
They were canceling the second day of her tests. A CT scan revealed the presence of a tumor (肿
瘤) on Kelly’s right kidney.
Kelly was shocked about the discovery and concerned she might no longer be a donor
available for Dana. That meant that Kelly had to have an operation to remove the tumor, unable to
donate her kidney. Meanwhile Dana had to wait for some other donors for a matchable kidney,
which was really hard to find. Dana was thrown back to desperation.
The cousins were at a loss. But their doctors wouldn’t give up. They tried every possible
means to find a solution that could satisfy both sides, treating Kelly’s illness and offering Dana
transplanting. But the bad news was that there had been few such reported cases.
Determined to solve this difficult problem, Dr. Wee, director of the Kidney Transplant
Program, held meetings with a team of specialists to discuss over details of the case and best steps
to move forward. They worked day and night to search for related information and make analysis.
Seeing the devotion of the experts, Kelly and Dana felt the flame of hope returning to their hearts.注意:

After many meetings, the medical team felt confident to treat the two patients at the same
time. Dr. Wee told the cousins that with their expertise they could deal with their situations at the
same time. First, they safely removed Kelley’s right kidney with the tumor in it. Then they
removed the tumor from the kidney. After the repair and reconstruction, and with more than 95%
of the healthy kidney remaining. Dr. Wee transplanted it into Dana. It turned out the win-win
practice, a breakthrough in similar medical cases.
The cousins recovered from their surgeries. “I have an overwhelming sense of gratitude to
Kelly and all the doctors and thankfulness for the opportunity I’ve been given.” said Dana. “Now I
have the opportunity to see my three sons marry, and have their children. Those are what I might
not have been able to look forward to before.” Dana, with a perfectly functioning kidney, planned
to return to her teaching job in the next spring. Kelly felt blessed to have had her tumor removedwhile helping her cousin to recover with a transplant.

Everything went according to plan, until it didn’t. The night before my first marathon, I ate
the classic runner’ s dinner. That morning, I woke up before my alarm, tiptoed downstairs to toast
three waffles and slathered them in peanut butter. I had slept eight hours, my unreliable left knee
wasn’t bothering me, my stomach was full. I was ready. Then my girlfriend, Louisa, knocked on the door asking: “Have you checked your email?”
The Twin Cities Marathon in Minneapolis and St. Paul had been canceled. Race officials sent an
email at 5: 16 a. m. announcing the race had been called off due to “black flag conditions”--
record-breaking heat.
While I understood why the race organizers didn’t want to put runners at risk, I also knew
that I had trained in the baking and humid Washington, D.C. all summer. If I started early and
finished around noon, I’d miss the worst heat of the day. Louisa offered to bike alongside me, with
water, snacks and salt pills in tow.
I quickly called my friends to figure out what to do. About 40minutes later, we were
heading for starting line in downtown Minneapolis, drinking a gallon of water, ready to run our
own marathon. There is a psychological difference between running 42. 2 kilometers and running
an organized marathon. The distance becomes a shared challenge when you’re running with
thousands of others. That gives a runner confidence they can finish the race as well.
“When you’re in that marathon setting, having people on the sidelines, having people
running alongside you, maybe running in a new location, there are so many other external things
to help keep you focused, “my friend Samson said. The sights and sounds “give you a little of a
break from the internal reflection that can happen when you start to struggle.” Indeed, it is a
mental race.

On our way to the starting line, we were wondering if anybody else would show up despite
the cancellation. To our surprise, there were still spectators along the course, often neighbors
gathered outside of their houses handing out bottles of water as they watched runners go by. With
hot air constantly hitting us, bystanders passed me one ice-cold sponge and a wet rag to cool my
body down. Somewhere around half of the route, I was also offered a handful of orange slices and
a banana from a stranger on the side of the road but I politely declined. Their inspiration and
kindness were what kept me running all the way forward.
The last 8 kilometers of the Twin Cities Marathon route are largely uphill. By that point in
the race, my thighs felt like jells and my leg muscles were rubber bands. The finish line sat at the
bottom of the hill. No finish banner this time, I could still see dozens of supporters cheering
runners home. I kept glancing at my Apple Watch, counting down the meters until it ticked to
“42.2” kilometers. I called out “I’m done” to Louisa, who had been delivering much-needed
encouragement along the way. I let out a dry sob (or two) and gave hugs to people around. Despite
the race getting canceled, it felt just like a real victory.

Jack was new to Woodberry Forest School this year. He carried a secret burden: a stutter
(口吃) that often brought about laughter from his classmates. This made him very upset. Shy and
reserved. Jack chose to fade into the background rather than draw attention to himself. He felt like
an outsider, never quite fitting in.
Jack was eager to exchange ideas with his classmates, but afraid of getting into trouble.
Jack's science teacher, Katherine, a warm and caring woman often wearing a smile, noticed Jack's
stutter and shyness. She observed how Jack struggled to express himself in class and how he
would shy away when called upon to speak.
Determined to lend a hand, Katherine took Jack under her wing, encouraging him to
embrace bravery and believe in his own abilities. Subsequently, Katherine adopted a set of
systematic methods to help him. She was glad to find the potential in him, the intelligence and
creativity that lay hidden beneath his stutter. Whenever possible, Katherine was always ready to
praise his efforts, always declaring, "You are so great!” Whenever Jack stumbled over his words,
Katherine always smiled at him encouragingly, providing him with the strength to continue. Dayby day, Jack found himself speaking with greater confidence and fluency.
One day, Katherine announced that each student should give a presentation of a science
project in front of the class. Jack's heart sank, the familiar fear and anxiety wrapping around him.
How could he possibly stand before his classmates to give his ideas clearly, knowing that they
would laugh at him? As the presentation drew near, Jack's anxiety mounted. Then came the big
day. He watched his classmates take turns to walk up to the front. They gave their presentation
with confidence and backed to their seats with satisfaction. However, while Jack was waiting for
his turn, his heart beat so violently that he felt as if he were sitting on pins and needles.

It was finally his turn. Jack stood up slowly and edged towards the front, his hands
trembling. His classmates looked on, ready to see what was in store for Jack. He stood there
tongue-tied with his face turning pale. When he looked around the classroom, Katherine was justsmiling at him encouragingly. So Jack took a deep breath and concentrated on his presentation.
Words flowed from his lips, despite some pauses and repetitions. He even added gestures to better
express himself. It seemed that confidence had found him.
When Jack finished his presentation, the room erupted into applause. The applause washed
over Jack, and with it came a wave of confidence. His grateful eyes met Katherine's, her smile
now a symbol of his journey to self-assurance. No longer defined by his stutter, Jack felt a sense
of belonging. His presentation wasn't just an assignment; it was a testament to his ability to
overcome personal obstacles. As the room quieted, Jack returned to his seat, his heart lighter,
knowing that he had made a lasting impression on his classmates and himself.

Luis scanned the field. The soccer ball was tucked (盘带) between his feet. He searched and
searched until… there! His friend Nicholas was wide open. He passed the ball to Nicholas.
Nicholas trapped the ball and swung his leg back, kicked, and…
GOAL!!! Luis leaped up and down, celebrating. Just then, Devon walked up, his face
twisted in anger. Devon had started playing soccer during breaks with them a few weeks ago. He
was a nice enough guy when he felt like things in the game had gone his way. But when he felt
like they hadn’t, watch out.
“Why didn’t you pass the ball to me, Luis?” Devon shouted.
“Guy, you weren’t open. It’s just that simple.” Luis responded.
“I’m fast though!” Devon protested, his voice still loud and angry.
Luis ignored him. He didn’t like being dragged into arguments. So that’s what he did with
Devon most of the time —just ignored him. It almost always worked.
“I don’t like the way that Devon talks after soccer,” Nicholas said. Luis looked up from his
book. They took the same bus after school.
“What do you mean?” he asked as Nicholas sat down.
“He’s always yelling at people and bragging (吹嘘) about himself.” Luis nodded. That was
true. “It isn’t right,” Nicholas continued. “It makes soccer less fun. I want to tell him that he can’t
play with us anymore. I already talked to all the other guys and they all agreed with me,” Nicholas
said. His eyes were set in determination.
The bus started to slow down for Nicholas’ stop. Nicholas stood up, swinging his backpack
back onto his shoulder. Luis watched as Nicholas ran off the bus. Although everyone had been
getting a bit sick of Devon ruining soccer for a while, shutting him out seemed too extreme. He
spent the rest of the ride trying to figure out what he should do.

curb his temper and even started apologizing if he caught himself getting too aggressive. It wasn’t
perfect immediately, but everyone noticed the change. Gradually, Devon began to celebrate others’
successes as much as his own and his fits of anger became rare. Luis felt proud of himself for
finding a way to include Devon .And the games became more enjoyable for everyone involved.

We were sitting in her classroom, giggling, playing tricks on each other and talking about
the latest information of the day. Mrs. Virginia DeView cleared her throat and asked us to be quiet.
“Now,” she said smiling, “we are going to discover our professions.” The class seemed to
gasp(喘气) in chorus. Our professions? We stared at each other in disbelief. After all, we were
only 13 and 14 years old.
Because Virginia DeView was demanding, most of us just overlooked her brilliance.“Yes, you will all be searching for your future professions,” she said with a glow on her
face as though this was the best thing she did in her classroom every year. “You will have to do a
research paper on your upcoming career. Each of you will have to interview someone in your
field, plus give an oral report.”
All of us went home confused. Who knows what they want to do at 13? I had narrowed it
down, however. I liked art, singing and writing. But I was terrible in art, and when I sang, my
sisters screamed: “Oh, please shut up.” The only thing left was writing.
Every day in her class, Virginia DeView monitored us. Where were we? Who had picked
their careers? Finally, most of us had selected something: I picked print journalism(新闻工作).
This meant I had to interview a devoted newspaper reporter in person, and I was terrified. Sensing
this, for the next 90 minutes, Mrs. Virginia DeView filled me with stories about print journalism…
A few days later, I gave my oral report totally from memory. Surprisingly, I got an A on the
entire project.
Years later, I forgot all about Virginia DeView and the careers we selected. I was in college
hunting for a new career. My father wanted me in business, which seemed to be sound advice at
the time, except that I had no sense of any business skills. Then I remembered Virginia DeView
and my desire at 13 to be a journalist.

I called my father. And I told him about my dream of becoming a journalist. His initial
reaction was surprise, then confusion, and finally, understanding. He said, “Remember, you were
always more into the arts and writing than business. Perhaps Virginia DeView’s class was a sign of
what you should truly pursue.” His words resonated with me, and I realized that I had been
suppressing my true passion for years. I thanked him for his support and told him that I would
pursue journalism with all my heart.
Now I've had the most incredible and satisfying reporting career. I’ve interviewed world
leaders, uncovered major stories, and written articles that have changed people’s lives. I often

to her for planting that seed in my young mind and helping me realize my potential. I've come to

Dad’s Outer-Space Sweater
Grandma knitted Dad a sweater for his birthday. It was PURPLE, the glow-in-the-dark
purple! Even crayon purple couldn’t compete. Dad loved it, claiming it was his favorite sweater.
But I found it embarrassing as he wore it all the time: walking the dog; shopping for groceries and
— worst of all — coming to my school events.
During a visit to our local farm, Dad tore his sleeve on a fence. When I pointed out that it
was ripped, he said he would just wear it around the house. The hole got bigger and one night, at
dinner, the thread became a table guest. Dad forked it up with spaghetti (通心粉) and lifted it to
his mouth.
“Look out, Dad!” I shouted. “You’re about to take a bite of your sweater.”
Dad laughed, put his fork down and sighed, “The sweater might be beyond saving now.”
The next day, Mom and I repurposed the sweater on a Halloween scarecrow and put it in
our front yard. When our neighbor dropped by to give us some used tennis balls for our cat, shegave her thumbs-up at our idea. But the sweater got rained on, and leaves stuck to it. Birds pulled
the yarn (毛线). Dad finally removed it and was about to throw it away. He stood there long,
looking sad. It made me sad too. I thought about the day he got it, the day he tore it, and ail those
days he wore it. Then I thought of the day he almost ate it.

And that gave me an idea for the school year’s art show. I begged Dad for his beloved
sweater. Although he was surprised, he still agreed. Immediately I jumped into action. After
carefully washing, drying, and unwinding it into a big pile of curly purple yarn, I glued a bunch of
it onto a giant hard paper plate, together with some old neon - green tennis balls from my
neighbour. To achieve a better effect, I even shaped a fork out of foil, and put it on the plate as
well. With everything ready, I looked at my creation and couldn’t contain my thrill and eagerness
— “what would Dad say at the sight of this?” Finally, the day of the art show arrived.
My Spaghetti and Meatballs, Outer-Space Style stood out in the art show. Many
people gathered around the booth, and laughed as they figured out what it was. People’s attentionquickly drew Mom and Dad over. Just as they were surprised to see what I had made, the principal
announced the winner for this year — “Spaghetti and meatball”! Among the cheers, Dad marveled
at my creativity and added with delight, “This’s the perfect ending for my sweater”. We took many
pictures that day and in the pictures, everyone smiled a hearty smile. My artwork was still on the
table in Dad’s office and Grandma had promised to knit him a new sweater — this time, a glow-
in-the-dark green one.

Ronald Dembner from the Veteran’s Hospital in Henry County, Georgia. It was obvious that he
was struggling and in bad shape. But it wasn’t until they arrived at his home that her worst doubts
were confirmed. Expecting to be greeted by family members, she was greeted by something out of
a nightmare (噩梦) episode of Hoarders instead.
Mr. Ronald’s home was covered with rubbish. The counters, carpets, and walls looked dirty.
The room smelt absolutely terrible. Because all of Ronald’s family members had passed away, he
had no one to assist him. Even the home care nurses had stopped coming to visit as a result of the
extremely awful living conditions. He was completely alone, except for his dog, Homer, who had
taken to pooping in the house. Unable to clean up after himself or Homer but terrified of losing his
home and his dog, Mr. Ronald was too afraid to reach out for help.
Mulvihill, however, was not. Horrified by what she witnessed, she decided to take matters
into her own hands. She spent hours on the phone, contacting the fire department, adult services,
the Chamber of Commerce and Habitat for Humanity. No one could offer any help. “Everyone
said, mentally he’s fine, he’s just older. So nobody will help,” she said.
Finally, with all other resources running out, she posted a call to arms on social media,
creating the group. Helping Mr. Ronald. She explained the situation. She wrote in part, “I drove
him home and he asked me to help him inside. He lives alone and cannot keep up with his pet. The
house is terrible.” She went on to explain that “the main issues are dog poop (1 dog) and general
disrepair (no railing on the stairs, soiled carpet and furniture, etc)”. She knew it would take an
army to make things right. Luckily, she had found one,2000 strong. The army was formed.

young students to retired seniors, they banded together to lend a helping hand. The group
organized cleaning sessions, where they scrubbed floors, washed walls, and disinfected every

furniture. The volunteers didn’t stop there; they brought in food and supplies for Mr. Ronald and
Homer, ensuring they had everything they needed. The transformation was remarkable, and the
house was soon transformed into a clean and comfortable home.
Mr. Ronald was deeply moved by what Mulvihill and the volunteers had done. Tears
streamed down his face as he expressed his gratitude for their kindness and compassion. He
couldn’t believe that so many people would come together to help him, a stranger, in need. He told
Mulvihill that he felt like he had a new lease on life and that he was finally able to enjoy his home

After a busy week, Emily and her parents decided to go on a mountain picnic. They longed
to fully experience nature’s beauty and enjoy quality family time. Little did they know, this outing
would be filled with unexpected twists and turns (波折).
Arriving at the mountain’s base, they discovered a house, in front of which Mike and his
father had just finished loading a boat onto Mike’s truck. Emily approached them and asked for
the best picnic spot in the area. Knowing the mountain well, Mike suggested a location about two
hours’ walk away. “It’s worth the effort,” he assured them.
Parking their car next to Mike’s truck and carrying their picnic supplies, Emily and her
parents set off on the winding road. Tall green trees on one side, a flowing stream on the other, the
road eventually led them to a breathtaking clearing dotted with colorful wildflowers. They enjoyed
their delicious sandwiches, fruits, and snacks, engaging in pleasant conversations.
Just as they finished their meal and settled down to relax, dark clouds unexpectedly rolled
in. It looked like rain. Panicked, they hurriedly set up the tent they had brought. No sooner hadthey entered than raindrops began pouring on the roof. Heavy rain enveloped the surroundings,
making it impossible to see anything. They had no choice but to patiently wait it out.
After what felt like a century, the rain ceased. Emily and her parents wasted no time
packing up their belongings, ready to get downhill. However, their excitement turned to worry
when they discovered that the small stream they had previously crossed had turned into a wide and
impassable river. With no cellphone signal, they were trapped without a means of seeking help. To
make matters worse, darkness was approaching.

“I assure you that there’s nothing we can’t locate”
Whenever an item disappears, my initial inquiry to Mom is, “Do you recall the last place
you saw it?” “I was occupied making cookies in the kitchen,” Mom replied, “when I removed my
ring and set it on the counter. However, after taking a call from your aunt, I returned to discover
the ring missing!” “Hmm. Well, it couldn’t have disappeared all by itself,” I said. “Munchy, let’s
go take a closer look.” Munchy led the way to the kitchen.
The counter bore no indication of the ring’s whereabouts(下落); however, the flour
betrayed faint paw prints, which pointed toward the criminal’s identity. “The cat” I said. “Mr.
Jingles must have been playing with the ring, causing it to drop to the ground!” Crawling on the

I took a job as a receptionist for a vet almost five decades ago. As a keen animal lover, I
accepted the position on the condition that I wouldn’t have to assist with any wounded animals. I
couldn’t bear to see any creature in pain. It killed me to see the poor animals suffer.
At the end of my first week, we were closing the office for the day when a young man ran
up to us holding a severely injured Doberman Pinscher puppy (杜宾犬) in his arms and begging
us to save his life. The four-month-old pup had been hit by a car out of the blue.
The doctor and I ran back into the operating room. The only place the skin was still
attached to this poor little animal’s body was around one shoulder. It was on the edge of dying,
with awful blood and frightening bones. The vet worked tirelessly for what seemed like hours,
stitching (缝针) him back together again. I stood in the clinic’s crowded waiting room, praying
that the little puppy would pull through.
It turned out that was the easy part. The puppy had broken multiple bones, including his
spine (脊椎). If he survived the next few days, we were quite sure he would never walk again.
What followed called for great care and patience in the long term, but the vet was too occupied to
handle the puppy.
That day forever changed my life. After the operation, the vet mentored me, and I became
his assistant in all things medical. One of my first jobs was to give that Doberman puppy dailyphysical therapy. With mixed feelings, I accepted whatever came to my way—to attend to the
puppy until its recovery.

The following weeks witnessed I bonded with the Doberman in the clinic. Each day, I
carefully massaged his broken limbs and gently stretched his spine, all while he lay quietly,
trusting me with his recovery. Slowly but surely, he began to show signs of improvement. His eyes
brightened, and he even wagged his tail when I entered the room. Weeks went by until one day, I
felt this little fighter push pack ever so slightly. And he continued to push back until he could fully
use his legs. I was so overjoyed and relieved to see his recovery.
A year later, a huge Doberman broke loose and rushed toward me while I was walking

that I had nurtured back to health. He stopped in front of me, tongue lolling out with a friendlysmile. I petted him gently when I saw his tail wagging just like one year ago. Soon, he ran into the

Sophie had to move to a new school in the town from her own village with her family
because her father got a new job in a company. At the beginning, she used to sit alone in the class
and then one day a girl, Nia, from her class talked to her, hoping that they could be friends. Nia
was a modern girl born and brought up in the town. She was kind and a loving girl.Nia never really had many friends because she used to choose her friends very wisely.
When Nia came to Sophie with the hand of friendship, Sophie did not think even for a second and
accepted her friendship as she needed friends. As the days passed by, Nia and Sophie had already
developed a good friendship. They then promised that they would focus on the better things they
would do for each other if they made mistakes.
Soon Sophie made many friends like Stephen, George, Josh and Ernie. She spent a lot of
time with most of them as close friends and almost forgot about Nia. One day Sophie along with
all her friends decided to do something adventurous: to light up firecrackers (鞭炮) behind the
office building.
As word spread very fast among teenagers, Nia heard about it and told her to be aware of
her real friends but Sophie paid no attention to it. Nia then knew that Sophie would not be so
careful so she decided to look out for Sophie without her knowledge.
When they were pushing Sophie out to light up the crackers with a candle, Stephen saw a
teacher coming out of the office room. He waved to the others to run away but left Sophie alone
there.

The teacher noticed Sophie and shouted, “Stop!” He slowly approached Sophie and said
softly, “I know that children of your age think they have grown up and can do many things, and
are willing to bravely do something adventurous. However, no matter what kind of adventure you
take, the first thing to consider is safety, including the safety of you, your friends and the public.
Another question is, after experiencing this, do you know who your true friend is?”
In the headmaster’s room, Nia pulled out her phone. At this moment, Sophie’s phone rang.
It was Nia calling. Nia said sincerely, “If you knew it was me who told the teacher, you would
definitely hate me and treat me as your enemy. However, I have never forgotten our promise that
we would focus on the better things we would do for each other if we made mistakes.” Sophie
lowered her head in shame upon hearing this. She realized her problem and found her true
friendship.

All my life, I’ve had this dream that causes me to wake up feeling strange. In it, I am a little
girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school. Deep inside I know where the dream
comes from and what it means. It is. God’s way of reminding me of some unfinished business in-
my life.
I loved everything about school, even though the school I attended in Springfield, Ohio, in
the 1920s was very strict. I loved books, teachers, even tests and homework. Most of all I longed
to someday march down the passage to the music of “Pomp and Circumstance” (毕业进行曲). To
me, that song was even more beautiful than “Here Comes the Bride”.
But there were problems. With seven children, Mom and Dad had no money for things like
fine school clothes. But as long as I could go to school, I didn’t mind too much how I looked or
what I lacked.
What happened next was harder to accept. My brother Paul died of an infection. Then my
father died. The shock of these losses gave me a blow, and I fell behind in my schoolwork. At
fifteen, I dropped out of my beloved school and went to work in a bakery. My hope of walking
down the passage to “Pomp and Circumstance” was dead, or so I thought.
In 1940, I married Ed, a machinist, and we began our family. With the coming of children
went the dream of schooling. Even so, I was determined that my children would have the
education I had missed. All our six children eventually got some college training, and one of themis a college professor.
But Linda, our last child, had health problems. Now Linda was nineteen, and still she did
not have her high school diploma. She was repeating my own experience.
I prayed about this problem, and I began to see an answer. I drove to the local high school
to check it out. On the bulletin board, I spotted an announcement about evening courses.

That’s the answer, I said to myself. Linda always feels better in the evening, so I’ll just sign

at me with his brown, persuasive eyes and said, “Why don’t you come back to school?” I laughed
in his face. “Me? Ha! I’m an old woman.” But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I
was enrolled.
To my surprise, both Linda and I thrived in evening school. At last, graduation was near.
On the night of graduation, I was terrified. Then, when I heard the music of “Pomp and
Circumstance”, my fears dissolved in a flood of delight. At that moment, I remembered the dream—Hurry, Gin, you’ll be late for school—and my eyes clouded over when I thought of my mother:
“Mom, I only wish you and Dad could have been there to see your daughter and granddaughter in
all their pomp and circumstance.”

soda (发酵粉), a box of dried grapes, a box of salt, and a tin of caraway (葛缕子) seeds. On the
small table beneath the window, a bowl and a spoon and the measuring cup. There was as well anarrow card on which she had written in her careful hand the recipe for soda bread.
It was time, my mother said, that I learned a few things about cooking. I stood in the
kitchen doorway, all unwillingness. Why? I wanted to ask.
My mother tied an apron (围裙) around my waist. “All right,” she said. She node toward
the table, the bowl and the spoon and the recipe card. I looked at her. The morning sunlight
through the single window lit the down on her cheeks. It showed her brown eyes had some green
in them, too. And that on either side of her tall forehead her dark hair was turning gray.
“Go ahead,” my mother said. “Get started.” And when she saw me hesitate, she put her
hand on my shoulder and turned me toward the table and the bowl and the spoon. “Read the recipe
over and then gather your ingredients,” she said slowly. “They’re all right here. I’ll watch and
help.”
“Read it over,” my mother said. And I nodded, pretending to. The sun through the single
window was bright in my eyes.
“Now gather what you need.” I picked up the flour bin and brought it to the table. I picked
up the buttermilk and the dry grapes. I went back for the salt and the tin of caraway seeds and then
stood before the bowl and the spoon and the measuring cup. Beyond the window, beyond the gray
bars of the fire escape, the wash my mother had done this morning was waving on the line-sheets,
my school blouses and my father’s shirts, which were hung upside down, their arms waving in a
way that made me grow dizzy in sympathy.

On my first summer vacation as a junior high school student, I climbed my first mountain
— a fairly gentle 3,900-foot peak near where I live in Surrey, British Columbia. I was overweight
at the time and out of breath when I reached the summit. But I loved the challenge of conquering
something bigger than myself. Soon I climbed nearly 100 peaks. My parents were happy I’d
finally found a hobby. I often went climbing with my friend Mel Olsen, whom I’d met in a
Facebook group.
Last December, I, together with Mel, came to Oregon to tackle 11,240-foot Mount Hood.
It’s safer to start winter climbs at night when there’s less risk of the sun melting the snowpack.
That day we started at 3 am, following the paths alongside the ski runs. The temperature was
about 14°F, and we wore layers we could easily remove, knowing the sports would make us warm.
Along the way, we met two other climbers, and the four of us continued on together.
After about five hours, we reached Devil’s Kitchen, a plateau (高原) at about 10,000 feet.
By this point, the wind was howling. My exposed skin felt as though it were burning. The other
climbers decided to turn back, but Mel and I went ahead. We had ice axes, helmets, and crampons
We were in high spirits and prepared for the climb.
The trail we followed grew narrower and steeper. At around 9 am, we reached a flight of ice
step. It was about three or four feet tall and sloped at a 75-degree angle. I volunteered to go first. I
placed my left foot on the ice step. Confident I was safe, I put my full weight on it. Suddenly, I
heard a crack, and a whole slab of ice broke off the step, right under my foot.
In an instant, I fell backward before I made any response. I could hear Mel calling my namein a trembling voice as I tumbled down, bouncing off the rock face, and rolling down the
mountain as if I were a character in a video game. I remember thinking: This is it. You’re done.

I stuck out my arms and legs hopelessly, grabbing at anything. I was overwhelmed
with fear and regret. If only I had been more careful! I forced myself to calm down, pressing
myself against the slope to slow down. Fortunately, a few minutes later, I came to a stop on a
shallow incline. My clothes were shredded, my helmet was broken, and my face was bloodied
from cuts and scratches. I made an attempt to stand up but in vain. Unable to move an inch further,
I lay on the ice shivering and in pain, waiting for rescue.
As Mel made her way down, I yelled for help, and other climbers came to my rescue.
With them rushing toward me, I sighed with relief and tears of excitement blurred my eyes. They
made great efforts to relieve me of the suffering. Some offered to splint my leg and some called
Portland Mountain Rescue while Mel stayed by my side, hugging me tightly to keep me warmer
and less painful. So experienced and comforting were they that I was no longer as frightened asbefore. Eventually, I was sent to the hospital. I stayed for a long time. However, on my recovery,
with greater caution and better preparations I returned on the trails. One slip on a mountain can
change everything but never stops me from doing my favorite thing in the world.

game. We called his name and told him to pick up the ball, but he just stared blankly before going
back to kicking the dirt.
As the games went on, it was clear that the coach didn’t want our son to play. We practiced
with him, showing him how to hold the bat and throw the ball, but he never understood running
the bases or other things we tried to teach.
At the end of the season, our son once again received the “Most Improved” medal, which
he had received in other sports before. My husband and I looked at each other and I said, “Well, at
least he’s improving,” though it reminded me of other sympathetic gestures from coaches or
teachers. I was used to the feeling of our son being different and unable to fit into ball games. The
same year, his preschool teacher told me, “He’s not paying attention.” This was not what any
parent wanted to hear, but I knew it was true. As a stay-at-home mom, I was tired of having to
repeat instructions to him. Initially, I wasn’t sure how much of it was normal, as he was our first
child. We decided to have him assessed, but it was a guessing game until he turned six, when a
professional evaluation determined that he had Asperger syndrome My husband
always believes our son will be a good boy. Fortunately, he is blessed with good looks,
