人们的联想,利用不同事物之间的相似点,借助比喻词(如like, as, as...as, as if, as though,
Rhetoric In Practice (《英文实用修辞学》)一书这样来解释明喻:“A simile is an expressed
1ikeness.The simplest and most direct way of connoting an idea with something else is by means
of using similes . Simile is the neuter singular of the Latin adjective ‘similis’ meaning
The USA is like a big
melting pot where immigrants of different cultures or races form an integrated society. ”
① Peter is as tall as his father.
② Peter is as tall as a Maypole.
1.用介词as,like,of等。
(1)As
Beauty is as summer fruits, which are easy to corrupt and cannot last…
Overhead the hollow stretch of whitish cloud shutting out the sky was a s a tent
which had the who1e earth as its floor。
Out of the sleeves came strong bony wrists and hands gnarled knotted and hard aspeach branches.
I wandered lonely as a cloud.
They are as like as two peas.
His young daughter looks as red as a rose.
I passed and repassed the house, and stopped and listened at the door; all was dark
and silent as the grave.
as firm as a rock
as light as a feather
as close as an oyster
as mute as a fish
as strong as horse
as cool as a cucumber
as sober as a judge
as sure as a gun
(2)Like
例如:Paris is a morgue without you; before I knew you, it was Paris, and I thought it
heavens; but now it is a vast desert of desolation and loneliness. It is like the face of a
clock, bereft of its hands.
All that I had to show, as a man of letters, were these few tales and essays, which
had blossomed out like flowers in the calm summer of my heart and mind.
He works 1ike a horse/beaver/Trojan/black.
They spent money like water.
He talks like a book.

(3)Of
例如:He has a heart of stone.
He has the heart of a1ion, but he does everything in a down-to-earth way.
He is sometimes bad-tempered but really he’s got a heart of gold.
2.用连词as (犹如),what (犹如),as if, as though, than, and, the way 等。
His heart shivered a s a ship shivers at the mountainous crash of the waters.
Air is to man as water is to fish.
Men fear death, as children fear to go in the dark: and as that natural fear in children is
increased with tales, so is the other.
Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

A crowd of people were around him, touching his body, feeling his legs, and bidding
for him as if he had been a horse.
The first time I read an excellent book, it is to me just as if I had gained a new friend.我头一

Love and cough can not be hid.
A world and a stone let go cannot be recalled.
Truth and oil are ever above.
3.用动词seem,resemble (名词resemblance),treat/honour/regard/consider/respect
as,compare to,liken to,pass(胜过),remind of,be similar to,等。
例如:Look at the moon. How strange the moon seems: She is like a woman rising from a tomb.

4.用词组may/might as well…(as)(做…就好像做…),no more/less…than/not any
more…than(如同…一样) ,so speak/as it were (可以说,可以比喻地说)。
例如:He never listens—you might as well talk to a brick (as talk to him).
He woke them both up getting to bed,but when they tried to wake him up afterwards
they might a s well have tried to wake the dead.

When Dr. Henderson was assigning(指定) project mates for his psychology class, I
secretly hoped he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun
with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn't assign me to work with the fiercely competitive, extremely
serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate
(命运) would have it, Dr. Henderson very deliberately matched everyone in class and
announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.
.
I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself He looked at me as though I weren't
there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A
in the course. He wasn't mean or abusive; he just gave me the impression he could do whatever
project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.
Needless to say, I didn't look forward to an entire term of being brushed off, but I tried to
make the best of it and didn't say anything for fear that I would make things worse.
The project required each team to develop a hypothesis (假说), set up an experiment to
test the hypothesis, do the statistical analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team
received would be shared by both students. When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this
challenging student who had a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades—the exact
opposite of me. I was outmatched. I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped
short because I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out. I decided to stick to
it no matter what.
After long discussions we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of
teenagers. I wasn't sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
3. 结部分分为两段, 每段的开头语已为你写好;
Para 1. We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans.
_______________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________
Para 2. One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease.
_______________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________
Though I wanted to share my ideas with him fully, I failed to do so a s i f I
were a monster to him to draw him back in the study.
I just kept nodding like a machine when he asked me whether it is OK to do
this way or that way.
I started to wait to leave immediately we arrived at the place as a fish found
long lost water , and so did he.
I felt so sorry to hear that, a s restles s a s ant s on a ho t pa n, and I thought I
should visit him in any case.
We began to work as a fine team and we were similar horses and work
harder and harder, finally finishing our project on time.
We, as it were , were the shadow of each other at last in the course of study.
We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans. Though I wanted to share my ideas
with him fully, I failed to do so as if I were a monster to him to draw him back in the
study . I just kept nodding like a machine when he asked me whether it is OK to do this
way or that way . I thought it was impossible to persuade him into accepting my views, so I
didn’t want to waste our time to discuss. I started to wait to leave immediately we arrived at
the place as a fish found long lost water, and so did he.I just hoped that the presentation
day could come earlier.
One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease. I felt so sorry to
hear that, as restless as ants on a hot pan, and I thought I should visit him in any
case.He was a little surprised to see me when I stepped into his ward with some flowers and fruits.
I offered to do the rest work of our project and he invited me to share my ideas to perfect it. We
began to work as a fine team and we were similar horses and work harder and harder,
finally finishing our project on time. Our hard work paid off and Dr. Henderson’s was very
satisfied with our wonderful findings. From this project, we also learned the significance of
teammates. Just as the saying goes, one person can go far, but a group of persons can travel
farther. We , as it were , were the shadow of each other at last in the course of study .
人们常称隐喻为“浓缩的明喻”(a compressed or condensed simile)。
例如 A
Dictionary Of Literary Terms认为,隐喻是 “A figure of speech in which one thing is
described in terms of another. The basic figure in poetry. A comparison is usually
implicit; whereas in simile it is explicit.”
A,而是简捷地说A是B或B就是A。
All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.

He 1ives in a palac e of a house.
The boat disappeared in a mountai n of a wave.

Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and
digested.

a biting north wind刺骨的北风等。
注:某些复合形容词也含有喻体,例如:dog-tired (=very tired); pitch-dark/black (=very
dark/black); coal-black (=very black); snow-white (=very white)等。
He flatly refused us.

Pumpkin (南瓜) carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm
every October. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to
seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins
back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage﹣I carried an 85﹣pounder back
last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14﹣year
﹣old brother, Jason, was the winner. Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before
taking out their insides, but I was determined to prove my point. All of us were hard
at work at the kitchen table, with my mom filming the annual event. I'm unsure now
why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed
to make perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost,I bent over and pressed my
head against the opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then,as I went
on with my task, unwilling to quit,my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed
to put my whole head into it,like a cork(软木塞)forced into a bottle. I was able to
straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short﹣lived. The pumpkin was heavy. "I'm going to set itdown, now," I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight,I bent back over
the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that
I realized getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in. When I pulled
hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table
and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. "I can't
get it out!" I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed space.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph 1
I was stuck for five or six minutes though it felt much longer.
_____________________________________
Paragraph 2
That video was posted the day before Halloween.
________________________________________
I could hear my sister’s cutting laughter and Jason’s muffled voice talking about forcing
the giant thing open.
The air inside the hollow vegetable was flooded with of my anxious breath.
One girl recalled celebrating it with her brothers and sisters, and thanked us for “bringing
her home”.
It was five or six minutes though it felt much longer. The air inside the hollow vegetable was
flooded of my anxious breath. I could hear my sister’s cutting laughter and Jason’s muffled
voice talking about forcing the giant thing open. “No! Not my precious pumpkin!” I protested.
Eventually, Dad helped me adjust my body to a more relaxed position, and pulled the pumpkin
gently off my head. Hair in knots, nose and chain covered in pumpkin flesh, I let out a sigh of
relief. That’s when I realized the camera had been rolling the whole time!
The video was posted online the Monday before Halloween.I looked just like a pumpkin head in
it. Embarrassed and a little annoyed, I fled to my room, but Mom stopped me. “You haven’t read
the comments yet.” I scrolled down the screen and marveled at the stories the viewers shared
about Halloween. One girl recalled celebrating it with her brothers and sisters, and thanked us for
“bringing her home”. The words brought warmth to my heart and tears to my eyes. I felt lucky to
be a part of this mischievous yet loving family.
对话提示词,如 said Winston、he said、he added 等 (注意,主语是名词时通常放在动
When you were a young
man we were all living in the tree- tops,” said the barman, with a glance at the other
customers.”
动词:think(想);declare(表明,宣称);admit(承认);detail(详细解释道);
emphasize(强调);remember(回想起,记得);recall(回想起,记起);comfort (安
慰);begin(开始讲话); add (补充说,继续说);hesitate(犹豫);continue(继
续);repeat(重说);scream(尖叫,大声叫);exclaim(惊叫,呼喊);scold(责备);
laugh(发笑);chuckle(低声 轻笑);sneer(嘲笑,讥讽);shout(大声说,怒骂);
reply(回答);sob(啜泣);demand(要求);command(命令);suggest(建议);
persist(坚持);remark(说起,评论); agree(同意);beg(恳求, 哀求);announce(宣布);explain(解释);sigh(叹息);correct(纠正);whisper(耳语;小
声说);grunt(咕哝);mumble(口齿不清地说);stammer(结结巴巴地说);stutter
(结结巴巴地说);groan(发牢骚);grumble(嘟哝;发牢骚);mutter(嘀咕;发牢
骚);complain(抱怨);murmur(喃喃细语); moan(呻吟,抱怨); gabble(急促
而含混不清地说);gasp(气喘吁吁地说);snarl(不耐烦地说);snap(厉声说,怒气
And now I must go,” she said as soon as he had mastered his
instructions.
Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don’t
get lost!”
“ Whatever is he saying?” said a voice, very near, distinct and shrill through the warbling
of the Super-Wurlitzer.
“These women!” he said, as the machine rose into the air.

Steven Price is the class clown and has an unyielding (执着的) passion for coins. He tells
silly jokes and asks dumb riddles while Ms. Redfield is trying to teach. “Ms. Redfield,” said
Steven. “What have a head and a tail, but no body?”
“I don’t know,” said Ms. Redfield. “Coins!” Steven laughed and laughed.
When his attention is diverted (转移) from coins, he finds amusement in playing tricks. I
don’t mind when Steven plays tricks on Ms. Redfield or on some other kids. I just hate it when he
plays tricks on me. I try to avoid or ignore him, but he gets me every time!
During recess (课间休息) on Monday, Steven was holding a small box in his hand. “Come
and see what I’ve got,” he said to me. Before I could reject it, Steven lifted the lid. As the lid ofthe creaks opened, a horrifying clown figure sprang forth with a sudden burst of energy. Its
painted bloody grin stretched unnaturally wide, revealing rows of sharp, jagged (锯齿状的) teeth.
I was startled! My heart raced as the clown’s high-pitched cackle (咯咯的笑) echoed through the
classroom. “You nearly gave me a heart attack!” I said. Steven just made a face and disappeared.
On Tuesday, we were studying measurement. Steven asked me to help him measure part of
the hallway for his project. I told him I was busy working on my own math problem. “This will
just take a minute!” he said. He had a piece of string 30 feet long. He wanted to see if it would
reach to the cafeteria. I held one end of the string, and Steven went down the hall and around the
corner. Pretty soon I felt the string get tight. I thought he was measuring. Keeping holding the
string, I thought he would come right back.

Lek raced down the street, ran around the corner, and at last pushed open the door of hisparents’ restaurant. If he hurried, he might have time to make his krathong(水灯) before the
celebration started.
Tonight was Loy Krathong, the Festival of the Floating Lanterns. All over Thailand, people
would send out lighted candles in tiny boats along rivers so that the past year’s problems could
sail away with them and be replaced with wishes for the new year.
As Lek wrapped a pile of banana leaves around a bamboo base to form his boat, Lek
thought about his sister, Dao. She was too sick to float a krathong. Perhaps a wish on Loy
Krathong would take away her illness. Maybe then she would be able to laugh the way she used
to. He put four red flowers inside the banana leaves and in the middle, he placed a tall, white
candle.
“The river goddess will be pleased with your krathong,” his grandma looked at Lek’s boat
and said. “Tong will help you launch your boat. You are too small to do this by yourself.” She
gave him a serious look. “Now we must hurry to get ready for our customers.” Like last year, only
his brother Tong was allowed to launch krathongs into the river for their customers. But this week,
Lek had practiced launching the way Tong did and he was sure he could make it by himself.
After washing piles of dishes, Lek realized that it was time to launch the krathongs. Lek
made his way outside through the crowd standing under the full moon, and spotted Tong standing
on the jetty(码头) and lowering a krathong into the water with his pole. Lek took out matches and
lit the candle on his tiny boat. He looked over his shoulder to see if his grandma was watching.
Then he lay down at the edge of the jetty and made a wish that Dao would get better from that
minute on. He lowered his krathong toward the water, stretching to reach its surface.

I was nominated (提名) for the Junior Honor Society. When I came back home that day, I
sat in the family room and filled out the honor society application. I tried my best to prove that. I
had all the characteristics required in a candidate: scholarship, leadership, service, character, and
citizenship.
The next day, I turned the paperwork in to the advisor and waited patiently.
Months went by, and I received a letter from the school about the honor society. As soon as
the school bus let me off that afternoon, I raced into the house. My mother was typing at the
computer. “Mom,” I said, “I didn’t make the honor society.”
She smiled and held up her hand to give me a high five. “You jokester (捣蛋鬼).”
I felt tears well into my eyes. “No, really, they didn’t choose me,” I said and handed her the
letter.
“Oh, honey, I’m sorry. I thought you were kidding,” my mother said. “There must be some
mistake.” She grabbed the phone from the charger and dialed the honor society advisor.
He told her that no mistake was made, but he couldn’t disclose the reason for my non-
selection. The decisions of the committee were final. There was no appeal process
She contacted the school headmaster. His answers were the same.
Not being a member of the honor society wasn’t going to ruin my future, but it did hurt me.
Nearly all of my friends were chosen for the honor society. You could never imagine how difficult
those weeks were for me!
“It’s not fair,” I said one night at supper. “It bothers me that I don’t know why I wasn’t
chosen,” I said. “The committee should give a reason, so the student can do better.”
My parents agreed. We discussed ways that the selection process might be improved.注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

I stared at myself in the mirror: blue tights, yellow vest, a fish tail trailing behind me, and
large eyes sitting at op my head. I raised my eyebrows and sighed.
“Mom, I don’t think this costume is right,” I said. “Maybe the makeup will add something,”
Mom replied hopefully.
Somehow Mom had convinced me to play the Fish Footman in Alice in Wonderland. I
can’t say it’s been the time of my life.
“What if I forget my lines?” I hesitated.
“Oh Riley, is that what you’re afraid of? I know you’ve been rehearsing for two months,
you were the first off-book in your scene, and I couldn’t be prouder of you.” Mom said, kneeling
down and hugging me.
The next day we pulled into the parking lot, and I stepped out of the car, wearing the
questionable costume. I shrank inside myself, but Mom pulled me toward the makeup room. When the makeup was done, I looked at myself in the mirror. My jaw dropped.
“Mom! I can’t go onstage like this!” I cried.
“Why not?”
“I’d be a laughing stock (笑柄)! ”
“Riley, look around you! You’re not the only one in an odd costume.”
“What if we just sneak out? No one will miss me.” I whispered.
Mom’s lips disappeared into a thin line, and I knew I had gone too far. “Riley, I’m going to
watch you go out on that stage tonight. And that’s the end of it.” Then mom disappeared into the
audience. I sat there, alone and bored, as the play began and the curtain rose on.
The two boys dressed as Two of Clubs (梅花 2) near me chatted casually about this and
that. Suddenly, they asked, “You’re awfully quiet. Is this your first show?” I tried to respond, but
my voice caught in my throat and refused to escape. I coughed and nearly yelled, “YES!”
The Ace of Diamonds (方块A) sitting nearby laughed. “The audience will certainly hear
you if you talk that loud. But you might have to clear your throat first, she chuckled. I gave them a
weak smile.

Ryan Swift was a bright and thoughtful boy with a big heart. He lived in Adams County,
Colorado, and attended a small primary school. His teacher, Mrs. Miranda Green, was a kind and
dedicated educator who always spend extra time with the kids to help them.
At home, the Swifts often expressed gratitude for Mrs. Green’s daily emails, which
provided them with ways to help Ryan improve. They sometimes mentioned that the teachers were
not fully rewarded for the contributions they made in developing children into responsible adults.
Kids were always listening to their conversations, and they were quick to model adults’ behaviour.
As Ryan’s birthday drew near, a sense of excitement grew inside him. He would get this
year’s birthday money from his parents, but this time, he wanted to do something truly special
rather than spend the money on toys or treats for himself. Ryan decided to give Mrs. Green, his
beloved teacher, a well-deserved pay rise.
The next morning after his birthday, Ryan arrived at school with a big smile on his face. Holding
his school bag to his chest, he had a secret of his own — he had carefully placed $15 in bills along
with a heartfelt note inside a plastic zip-lock bag.Dear Mrs. Green,
I don’t think that you get paid enough for what you’ve done for us, so will you accept this
gift?
Ryan Swift
He was the first to arrive at the classroom and tiptoed up to Mrs. Green’s desk. With a bit of
anxiety, he placed the zip-lock bag on her desk, making sure it was hidden under a pile of papers.
His heart pounded wildly in his chest as he quickly returned to his seat, trying to act as usual.
Throughout the morning, Ryan stole glances at Mrs. Green, wondering when she would
find the surprise. The anticipation was almost unbearable, but he knew that the joy on her face
would be worth it. “Mrs. Green must be thrilled to have this pay rise!” Ryan couldn’t help smiling
to himself when picturing the scene in his mind.注意:

My dad was more than a father to me; he was my friend and confidant (知己) and one of
the most amazing people in my life. So when he passed away suddenly from a stroke at the age of
51, my world fell apart. I was lost, along with my mother who had been with my father since age
16, two brothers, and everyone who knew him. We were thrown into a thick fog of anger, sadness,
and shock.
I cried every night and tried to hold onto all my memories of him. I replayed every moment
I could remember — writing down thoughts, printing out old e-mails, reading old birthday cards
— anything I could hang on to because I didn’t want to forget. As I was going through all these
old memories, I began to wonder about all the things I had missed. My dad was a quiet man who
was known for his listening skills, his patience, his humor, and his smile. He was often the one
listening instead of telling stories. I wanted to know what stories I had missed by losing him sosoon. So I decided to compile (编纂) a memory book as a surprise Christmas gift for my mom and
brothers.
I started my project in November, contacting everyone I knew who was close to my dad or
had been in the past. I sent e-mails and letters asking for friends and family of Gary Force to send
me their thoughts and memories of him. I asked them specifically to share funny stories about my
dad and the stories that maybe no one had ever heard or had long forgotten. I told them to respond
no later than one week before Christmas. I waited and waited and got very few responses by
December. I began to wonder if this was a horrible idea or if anyone even cared.

The summer finally came. That afternoon, the hot sun was shining brightly, making the tree
leaves almost burn and making people’s bodies seem to be on fire. Having nothing interesting to
do at home, I decided to go to the pool to enjoy the coolness instead of going swimming. The
reason was simple — I still couldn’t swim. I was impatient, and I always failed to do somethingand suffered losses. So the swimming lesson was put off again and again.
Upon arriving at the gym’s pool, I was greeted by a lively scene. Some people just jumped
into the water, with hands entering first and the body following in a smooth motion. Some were
kicking their legs rhythmically below the surface. All were happy. That was infectious, and I
couldn’t help but feel deep admiration. Then I made a decision!
Taking a deep breath, I followed their example, closing my eyes and jumping into the “vast
water” with a plop (扑通声).
At this moment, my head was pointing to the ground and my feet to the sky. When I
“plopped” to the bottom, my whole body was swinging hard and my hands and feet lost their
ability to feel. I just felt water rushing towards me, and my nose was filled with water. It was very
terrible. Suddenly, I was hit by something. I struggled out of the light blue water bit by bit as if
being dragged.
“That’s horrible!” I shouted 1oudly, and while I was complaining, I suddenly realized that I
couldn’t swim in the first place, so why should I be shocked? Just when I decided to stay away
from water, someone gently patted my shoulder and said, “Don’t be discouraged, little girl. Look,
swimming requires...” The lady introduced herself as Allison. She gave me a “1ecture” on how to

“Anybody have a bandage (绷带)?” a voice echoed down the dorm hallway. That was a
common scene frequently happening in our first week at college when we were all experiencing
“forgot-this-or-that.” I had forgot to bring snacks for late-night hunger. Some poor girl in the dorm
had apparently forgotten bandages. We all felt a little displaced.
Several months before, I sat at my high school graduation party admiring my gifts and
battling waves of post-high school emotions. The usual and beloved inspirational books were
lying in disorder around my feet, silently announcing the wealth of wisdom they wished to share.
A small pile of personal checks lay nearby. Laundry items, desk supplies, sewing things - all well-
intentioned and well-received. They would demonstrate their givers’ thoughtfulness over and over
during my college career.
But one gift struck me as strange. I frowned when I opened it. A first aid kit? Inside it were
a small packet of pills, pain-killers, creams, ointments (药膏), an insect sprayer (喷雾), a tape,
pads of gauze (纱布)and bandages. Who would give that as a gift? “You’ll need that once you’re
at school,” Mom pointed out. “You won’t have to chase down the campus nurse for every cough.
”I shrugged at this thought.
Not long after, in August, I packed my life into a borrowed truck and slipped the first-aid kit
in with my luggage. I barely thought about it once I reached campus, busy unpacking, book-
buying, scheduling and meeting new friends.
One day, I was peacefully sitting in my room, absorbed in preparing my studies. The quiet
atmosphere was suddenly broken by a sharp scream, “Anybody have a bandage? Emily got her
arm burnt!” The voice echoed through the dormitory hall, instantly throwing residents into a state
of confusion and alarm.

I grew up in the south of Arizona in a little community called Estepona. I was 16 when one
morning, my father told me I could drive him into a remote village called Mijas, about 18 miles

drive, and hardly ever having the opportunity to use the car, I readily accepted.
I drove Dad into Mijas and promised to pick him up at 4 P. M…Then I drove to a nearby
garage and dropped off the car. Because I had a few hours to spare, I decided to catch a couple of
movies at a theater near the garage. However, I became so immersed in the films that I completelylost track of time. When the last movie had finished, I looked down at my watch. It was six
o’clock. I was two hours late!
I knew Dad would be angry if he found out I’d been watching movies. He’d never let me
drive again. I decided to tell him that the car needed some repairs and that they had taken longer
than had been expected. I drove up to the place where we had planned to meet and saw Dad
waiting patiently on the corner. I apologized for being late and told him that I’d come as quickly
as I could, but the car had needed some major repairs. I’ll never forget the look he gave me.
“I’m disappointed that you feel you have to lie to me, Jason.”
“What do you mean? I’m telling the truth.”
Dad looked at me again. “When you did not show up, I called the garage to ask if there

On April 8, Mike Krugman, 74, had let his dog Riley out for a predinner walk on his 36-
acre property. Krugman got its kibble (狗粮) ready, waiting for it. Sometimes Riley liked to go
down to the barn and barked at the horses. When Krugman went to the barn and couldn’t find the
dog, he became concerned and decided to take a ride around the property on his ATV. The five-
foot fence that surrounds his property was buried in snow, leaving Krugman to wonder whether
Riley climbed on the snow and walked over the top of the fence.
There was another possibility Krugman was worried about. Krugman thought that maybeRiley had gone looking for Rose, his wife, who had died of a heart condition in January. She and
Riley, who would sleep on her pillow every night, were extremely close. “Then when Rose passed
away, it hid behind the bed for several days,” Krugman said. “You could tell it really missed her.”
After Riley went missing, Krugman began to look for it. He tried to find Riley’s tracks in
the snow but failed.

thought he heard a faint yip from a dog. As he walked through a clearing, he saw it: a black and
white Shetland sheepdog, visibly shivering behind some fallen pine trees. “Hey buddy,” he called
out, then whistled, “Come here! Do you want a treat?” The dog let out a pitiful groan with pain,
getting stuck under tangled (乱糟糟的) branches. He was a little startled, because dogs shouldn’t
have been up there so high. Hackett realized the dog was too weak to move. It was freezing cold.
The dog looked like it was near death. Hackett believed what he’d heard was the dog’s last cry for
help, and that if he hadn’t come along the dog would have died there. He tried to call 911 for help
but there was no signal. He knew he was going to have to carry him down the mountain.

On a sunny Friday morning, Mr. Stone, the Grade 4 head teacher, walked into the classroom
with a new student following him. She was a lively girl from Mexico, and her red mushroom hair
cut immediately drew everyone’s eyes. With a welcoming smile, Mr. Stone gestured for her to sit
beside Mike, a student known for teasing others.
During break time, Mike couldn’t help but laugh when he caught sight of his new
deskmate. Sara’s distinctive hairstyle seemed like an open invitation for him to make fun of her.
Leaning in towards Sara, he playfully suggested, “Hey, Sara. Ever thought about changing your
name to Dora? You look just like Dora the Explorer!” His words caused laughter and cheers from
the others in the classroom.
Sara’s eyes filled with tears, her cheeks turning red with embarrassment. Feeling hurt and
upset, she stood up suddenly, rushing to the teacher’s office to seek support from Mr. Stone. After
hearing her story, Mr. Stone offered her gentle comfort, saying, “Sara, your hairstyle is truly
pretty. Remember, everyone has their own sense of beauty.”
Mr. Stone then directed his attention to Mike, expressing his disappointment and urging
Mike to apologize to Sara. “Mike,” he continued, “your actions were unkind. We must treat
everyone with empathy(同情). Laughing at Sara’s hair has deeply hurt her.”
This conflict was temporarily settled, but Mr. Stone found himself lost in thought.
Reflecting on his own childhood, Mr. Stone recalled how he had been teased for being overweight.
The pain caused by hurtful words was like wrinkles on a crumpled(压皱的)ball of paper. Even if
you smoothed them out, the wrinkles stayed.
He wanted to teach an important lesson to Mike, the troublemaker. Then, a unique strategy
came to mind. He contacted Mike’s mother, explaining the situation and discussing a plan with her
to develop empathy in her son. They agreed that over the weekend, Mike’s mother would arrange
for Mike to have his hair cut extremely short.

Having nice things can make you feel good, but at the end of the day, what truly matters is
that we have people we love and care about in our lives.
Still, when someone is asked to sacrifice something in order to be with their loved ones in
good health, it can be hard. That was the situation one man was put in two decades ago when his
wife was diagnosed with cancer.
Years ago, Wesley Ryan learned his wife, Laura, had been diagnosed with cancer. The
medical bills were piling up, and he knew in order to continue making ends meet, he would have
to sell his beloved car.
Wesley loved that car and even nicknamed it Christine, based on the 1958 Plymouth Fury
from Stephen King’s book, Christine. However, Laura meant more to him, and Wesley wanted
her to continue getting the care she needed. So he handed over the keys.
“I know how much it broke him in half seeing that car drive away from him,” his son, Jake,
wrote online. “It’s a day that I’ll never forget.” Jake and his sister, Jeni, knew they wanted to helptheir dad reunite with the car he’d loved so much. And over the years, the siblings had saved up
enough money. So they started an online search and surprisingly, they were able to track down the
old car online.
Actually, the man who bought the car found out about Wesley’s story and the meaning
behind the beloved vehicle by accident. Moved by the sacrifice one man had made for his family
and how his family stepped up to repay him in the sweetest way possible, he soon got in touch
with Jake, who purchased it as soon as possible. And after careful consideration, Jake and Jeni
decided to surprise their dad in a nearby parking lot. Moreover, Laura, cancer-free for 13 years at
the time, joined them for the big reveal.

Last summer vacation, I worked as a servant at a BBQ restaurant as a part-time job. One
day, a man and his son came in and spent a very long time looking through the menu. Eventually, the father came up and started asking me about ingredients because his son was allergic.
At some point, the boy, who was probably about six or seven, handed me a card that listed
all his allergies. It was a lot. I don’t remember exactly, but I know eggs, gluten (面筋), and pork
were on there, as well as a couple of seasoning (调味品) things, like onions. There was no way I
was remembering this, and I didn’t know what the seasoning blends were off the top of my head,
so I asked to borrow the card so I could go check. He agreed, and off I went.
It turned out that a lot of our seasonings and sauces used at least one thing the boy was
allergic to, and the allergy to pork took over half our menu options away on its own. I spent
roughly ten minutes checking basically everything to see what we could serve him safely.
I occasionally went up to update the family on what I was doing. The father seemed mildly
surprised that I was going out of my way to figure this out. Eventually, I did figure out what I
could serve the boy. Because one of his allergies was meat. I switched out every piece of my
cutting board, wiping the table for good measure as pork grease (猪油) gets everywhere. I also
cleaned the remains out of the cutting station and made sure anyone else I saw serving them did
the same, but that usually took less than a minute.
The father thanked me deeply for being so accommodating. He had apparently had trouble
finding a restaurant that served something his son could eat. They quickly ended up becoming
regulars, and I would see them at least once a week. Since the boy already knew what he wanted
and what was safe, it was much faster.
