Long long ago, a crow (乌鸦) lived in a forest. One day, he saw a swan (天鹅) and he thought, “That
beautiful white 21 must be the happiest bird in the world.”
When he came to 22 his idea with the swan, the swan said, “I felt that I was the happiest bird in
the forest 23 I saw a beautiful peacock (孔雀). He has so many colorful feathers (羽毛). He is certainly
more 24 than any other bird.”
The crow then visited a peacock in the zoo, and saw that there were 25 two hundred people
coming to see him. The peacock was 26 a programme for humans. “Dear peacock,” the crow said, “you

Millions of years ago, dinosaurs (恐龙) controlled (控制) the earth. And there were different kinds of
dinosaurs on the earth. Some of them were no bigger than chickens, while some were about 90 feet long. But all
of them had very small brains (大脑). Later on, there weren’t any dinosaurs. What happened to them?
In the days of dinosaurs, the whole earth was warm and wet. There were many green forests. But the earth
changed slowly all the time. When parts of the earth became freezing and dry, the forests there died. Then
dinosaurs could not find enough food to eat. This must be one reason why dinosaurs died out.
There were also terrible fights between dinosaurs. Though there was no man to see any of the fights, the
animal’s footprints could tell us that the fights did happen.
What’s another reason? We can make a guess. New kinds of animals might come to the earth. Some of
them had big brains and were fast and strong. They could kill dinosaurs. Some ate dinosaur eggs, too.
There may be other reasons that we do not know about. Each year people will find some dinosaur footprints
and bones. Scientists are trying to tell us more about dinosaurs.

ever stopped to take a look at or talk to it.
One day, a mother was walking on the road with her baby. The baby was crying hard and loudly. No matter
what the mother did she couldn’t get the baby to stop crying. Then the mother looked down, and she found the
lonely dandelion. It looked so lovely in the sun with its white seeds (种子) widely open, and more beautiful than
other plants around.
The mother squatted down, picking the dandelion. Then she brought it up to her baby so that he could see it
clearly. When the baby saw the flowers of the dandelion, he quickly stopped crying and looked at them with
interest.
His mom put the dandelion near her mouth and blew the flowers up and down. The dandelion seeds then
flew in the air, spreading far away with the wind. The mother gave the dandelion to her son. He didn’t know what
the plant was, but he knew it was fun to play with, which made him giggle (咯咯笑) so happily.
Now the dandelion knew its value (价值) and didn’t feel sad. It lived a beautiful life just by being itself. It
wasn’t as beautiful as other flowers, but it brought the child a simple kind of happiness that money can’t buy.
Everyone is special and great. We can help others in one way or another. We’re far greater than we think
we are.

The next spring, the tree learned from the girl’s 67 (kind). When she sat next to it, the tree put 68
(it) down to give her shadow and let her keep away from the sun. The Spirit of the Forest saw this and went to tell

Everyone has their own personality traits (性格特点), but you may think some are not good for your
growth. 71
Face up to your faults (缺点). 72 Think about it carefully and write down the traits, like the ones
that always get you into trouble. You can also ask a friend or a family member for help.
When you are talking with someone who knows you well, ask them what they think your faults are. Other
people may help you see yourself more clearly. They can sometimes see some of your faults that you don’t know.
73 There must be someone you look up to in real life. Maybe they are host, writers, doctors or
scientists. Try reading stories or watching videos about these people. This can help you find out the personality
traits that they have and that you would like to have.
Put your ideas into practice. You can get started after you decide on the traits you want to change. But if
you try to change many personality traits at once, you won’t be able to focus on (集中精力于) any of them.
74 To have a good beginning, you can start with easier ones.
Be patient 75 It can take months or years for your new personality traits to really feel like you. But
if you practice them long enough, you’ll make it in the end. Keep moving forward and don’t give up!
