When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest, I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.

So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.

I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny, and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.

What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I cheeked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half-dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.

When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win. I wouldn’t care.

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was informed that I won the second prize in the statewide writing contest. Stunned and overjoyed, I could hardly believe my ears. As a student whose second language was English, I never imagined I could stand out in a formal writing competition. During the award presentation, I held the certificate tightly, with mixed feelings of excitement and pride. All my repeated revisions and endless efforts finally paid off.

I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. I thanked him sincerely for his encouragement and guidance, without which I would never have dared to take the challenge. My teacher smiled and told me that what mattered most was not the prize, but my tremendous growth and courage to break through myself. His words deeply impressed me. From then on, I no longer feared English writing. Instead, I fell in love with recording my thoughts. This precious experience taught me that growth always lies outside our comfort zone.

As a immigrant student whose native language was Spanish, I always struggled with English public speaking. I was shy, timid and afraid of making mistakes in front of crowds. Therefore, I always avoided any chance of speaking in class.

My English teacher Ms. Brown noticed my silence and nervousness. One day, she recommended me to participate in the school English speech contest. Without hesitation, I refused. I believed I was totally unqualified. I was convinced that I would embarrass myself and make a fool of me.

Instead of giving up on me, Ms. Brown patiently comforted me. She said she had seen my delicate thoughts in my weekly journals and believed I had unique insights. Inspired by her sincere trust, I finally gathered my courage and agreed to have a try.

I chose “The Beauty of Persistence” as my speech topic. At first, my script was plain and my pronunciation was awkward. I stumbled over every sentence and forgot lines frequently. But I did not give up. I revised my script again and again, practiced pronunciation every morning, and recorded myself to correct my tone and gesture. After countless practices, I gradually became fluent and calm. I no longer focused on winning or losing but immersed myself in every word of my speech.

Paragraph 1:Unexpectedly, the contest day arrived soon.
Paragraph 2:After the contest, I went to thank Ms. Brown personally.

Unexpectedly, the contest day arrived soon. Standing on the stage, I took a deep breath and swept my eyes across the audience. Unlike my previous nervousness and panic, I felt surprisingly calm. I began my speech fluently, pouring out my understanding of persistence sincerely. My voice was steady, my gestures natural, and my emotions genuine. I completely immersed myself in my speech, ignoring all tension and pressure. When I finished, the whole audience burst into warm applause. Regardless of the final result, I knew I had already defeated my shy and timid self.

After the contest, I went to thank Ms. Brown personally. I told her how her trust had changed me and helped me step out of my comfort zone. Ms. Brown smiled warmly and praised my remarkable progress. She reminded me that the greatest victory was never a trophy, but the courage to challenge ourselves and the perseverance to keep improving. Her words echoed in my heart. This unforgettable experience made me realize that every growth comes from persistent efforts and brave attempts. From then on, I became more confident and brave in my English learning journey.
