When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without
thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing
was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the
Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love
your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I
agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse
at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come
straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I
sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I
worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen
books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it
again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to
the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the
small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was
small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t
with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids
from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let
him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After
making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking
from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his
classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were
doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country
team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished
his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was
familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

knew exactly what to do.

going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within
seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned
down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge
boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But
the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge.
But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water.
Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

much past his prime, stuffing leaking from his stumpy tail, holes on his sock-body inexpertly stitched up with
thread that doesn’t match. I see my dearest childhood friend, my companion of a thousand nights. When I was
only two and very ill, an aunt made him for me and delivered him to the hospital. I bonded with him fiercely and
rarely let him out of my sight. When no one else was around, Monk-Monk played endless games with me, soaked
up my tears, and listened to my secrets.
And then Uncle Ken came to visit. He lived in Ohio and occasionally he would come and stay with us for a
couple of days. I didn’t know Uncle Ken well, and I didn’t like him very much. I had the feeling that he didn’t
really like me, either. He clearly thought it was pretty silly that a big first-grader was dragging a sock monkey
around, and he teased me by saying he thought he’d take Monk-Monk home to Ohio with him. His words almost
scared me to death. I clutched Monk-Monk more tightly.

around and saw that Eric, a boy in her class, was watching her. “It’s called rangoli,” she said. “The floor of my
grandmother’s house has pattens like that,” Erie said.
“What do you mean?” Lisa asked. “Hand me a piece of chalk,” Eric said. Eric sat down and began to draw.
He drew flowers that were more detailed than Lisa’s, but still had huge petals. Then he drew circles inside circles,
and surrounded them with small diamonds. Lisa kept drawing too.
“What are you guys doing?” a voice asked. Lisa and Eric had been so absorbed in drawing that the hadn’t
noticed their classmate Emma had been watching them. “Hey,’ Emma said, sitting down beside them, “that looks
like the rugs in my house. Except on the rugs, the shapes are bigger and flatter.”

When they drove by the library, the roofers were still working and the sun was beating down on them.
Sebastian wondered whether they have enough water. Sebastian had just finished two weeks of soccer camp, and
even with frequent water breaks, it had been miserably hot. It made him think again about taking some water to
the roofers. So he shared the idea with his brother, Marcos. Marcos shrugged. “You don’t even know those guys.
They’ve probably gone home already anyway.”
Maybe Marcos was right Sebastian walked to the end of his driveway, where he could get a view of the
library. But the roofers were still there, and the sun was still broiling (酷热的). Sebastian didn’t see any coolers or
jugs anywhere. Then he told Dad, “I really think they need some water.” A look of concern came over Dad’s face.
He picked up his car keys, saying “I think you’re right. It’s only going to get hotter.”

Everyone was determined to get the horses out of the pond — which is about 15feetwide.
Beneath a six-inch layer of ice, the water was “just barely above freezing”, said Chris Yerkes, the South
Kalispell Fire Department chief who rushed to the pond with about a dozen volunteer personnel.
When the firefighters arrived, neighbors had already attempted to pave a path through the ice toward the edge
of the pond using pick axes, sledgehammers and shovels, and “we continued with that effort.” Yerkes said.
Unfortunately, “as we got closer to the edge, we realized there was about three to four inches of mud.”
The thick layer of mud — which the rescuers couldn’t cut through — blocked the horses from climbing out.
Firefighters enlisted additional support from Flathead County Animal Control, as well as staff from local
equestrian organization Rebecca Farm.
“There had to have been at least 60 people here,” Langlois said. “It was very swift action on everybody’s
part.”

“Wait a minute,” the girl replied and went into the house. A few minutes later, she returned with an old man.
The girl held his arm and smiled lovingly up at him.
Tom explained the problem to the old man and added, “I need help because my legs are paralyzed.” The

Mother all right?” I asked Dad. “She’s having a little trouble with her typing,” he said. “She needs to practice. I
think she’d appreciate it if we all helped out a bit more. You might just remember that she is working primarily so
you can go to college.”

All the same, I liked our new house. One of the best things about living near the woods were the animals that
would come into our yard. Rabbits and turtles came over every night. It seemed as if they were only trying to go
home, and instead, what they had found was a big new land where their old homes used to be.
Besides playing in the driveway, we spent time in a sandbox, which my father built right next to the
driveway. One day before dinner, I ran to the sandbox to build a castle but found there in the sandbox was a snake.
It was lying very still, and it was beautiful. The snake had rings of color around it-red, then white, then
yellow, then black. I had seen a picture just like it in my reptile book, and I remembered that it was one of the
prettiest snakes in it. It said in the book that the poisonous snake looked very much like it. I was scared and ran
inside.

“BEES ARE DYING!” Doodlebug Pinkley cried, thrusting his latest copy of World of the Weird at his sister
Dandelion. His favorite magazine had a lot of strange but important content. This month it was insects in danger.
The number of certain bugs, including bees, was falling sharply all over the world.
“It’s terrible!” Dandelion replied, after reading the article. They were sitting on the outdoor patio (露台) of
Cool Yule’s Ice Cream Shop.
“Maybe we could make a bee roof garden, too — like in this article,” Doodlebug suggested. Yule
recommended making it on the patio, adding a pollinator (传粉昆虫) garden up there would attract bees — and
more customers. “Brilliant!” Everyone else responded in a chorus.
Now the problem was how to get the funds. Dandelion proposed raising money by setting up a booth near the
shop’s entrance to alert people and ask them to donate. The plan was a go!
The next day their friends Bog, Tomiko and Izzy met Doodlebug and Dandelion inside Yule’s. Everyone was
excited. They made handouts explaining how the garden would attract pollinators, do something to help prevent
flooding, and improve the air.
“We should have a bee mascot (吉祥物),” Izzy suggested. Doodlebug recalled the old bee costume that his
Mom wore for Halloween once. Over the enthusiastic uproar, Dandelion shouted, “And you’ll be the bee,
Doodlebug!” “WILL NOT!” Doodlebug shot back. “Too big. We need to stuff some grownup into that costume.”
But who, then? For ten mad minutes the kids debated loudly.
“Silence, you little noisy kids!” someone suddenly roared. “I’m trying to read about bees in danger!” The
whole crew turned in shock. There sat Doodlebug’s horrible teacher, Mrs. Noodleknocker. Doodlebug had
discovered long ago that she was a World of the Weird fan, but that didn’t make her any nicer. “Bees and
butterflies need help!” Mrs. Noodleknocker cried. “But a person can’t even worry about them peacefully!”
