Four Things About the Spring Equinox (春分)

Here are several things you may not know about it.
Kite Flying
In ancient times, people did not have good medical resources. So they wrote their health problems on paper kites. When a

Three Hous
The ancient Chinese people divided the fifteen days of the Spring Equinox into three hous or five day parts. As the old
saying goes, “Swallows fly back to the North in the first hou; thunder cracks the sky in the second hou; lightning occurs
frequently in the third hou, which shows the climate feature during the term.”
Spring Vegetables

seasonal vegetables that differ from place to place. The ancient teachings in a Chinese classic suggest people eat the seasonal
food, especially vegetables, to help preserve health and bring good luck.

Not too long ago, 41-year-old Garrett Fisher flew in a small airplane close to the surface of Europe’s largest glacier(冰川),
which is in Norway. In that environment, the plane carrying a man who photographed glaciers seemed almost like a toy.
Fisher often combines two activities he loves, flying and photography, trying to photo- graph every glacier on Earth. He
wants his photos to show the beauty of glaciers before some of them disappear. Scientists say many glaciers are melting or
getting smaller because the Earth's average temperature is increasing. By 2100, the size of European glaciers can decrease by
between 22 percent and 84 percent. Nearly all small glaciers in Norway will likely disappear. For Fisher, this means that time is
running out. The melting pushes him to try to photograph them before it is too late.
As a child, Fisher lived next door to a small airport in the state of New York. His grand- father was a pilot and took Fisher
on plane rides when he was a young child. His grandfather would tell him, “Whatever you set your mind to, you can do. ”
In the late 1990s, a friend told Fisher that the world’s glaciers were disappearing. This pushed him to combine his love of
flying and photography to photograph the Earth's remaining glaciers. He believed he was in a race against time and that his
photographs could be of great value to future generations. So, he launched Global Glacier Initiative, a non-profit group to
support and show his work, and he planned to open his photos to the public for research.
Some people will ask him why he always risks flying over glaciers when satellites have already given pictures of them.
Fisher says, “Satellite images can't really show the loveliness of glaciers the way my photos can. My photos show the colors
and shapes as the light from the sun hits them. Science has all of the data we need. The problem is that it’s not beautiful. ”
4. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Fisher’s social activities.
B. Fisher’s trips to European countries.
C. The reason for Fisher’s shooting glaciers.
D. The cause of the rise in Earth temperature.
5. What is related to Fisher’s flying hobby?
A. His grandparents' dream.

7. What does Fisher say about his photographs in the last paragraph?
A. They lack light processing.
B. They lack the colors and shapes.
C. They show the beauty of glaciers.
D. They hardly show the loveliness of glaciers.

A large number of India’s urban (城区 ) poor kids receive little or no education. Even if they enter a formal school, their
dropout rates are very high. Door Step School (DSS) aims to bridge the huge gap between these kids and education.
True to its name, Door Step School sets up a school right at the doorstep of kids who can’t get formal education due to a
variety of reasons.
The team at DSS follows a direct model — they set up a classroom in any area, a footpath, construction site, or underpass,
where they foresee the greatest need. They look for proper locations, and after making sure that enough resources are in place,
they accept students in the area. DSS provides lessons of different levels. The organization even tries to provide classes in the
local language, or whatever the students choose.
Another interesting project of DSS is a school on wheels. It uses a bus that has been changed into a classroom, which
holds about 25 kids at a time.
Since it was started in 1988, Door Step School has spread from Mumbai to the neighbouring city of Pune in Maharashtra,
covering a larger area and number of kids. Now DSS has a team of more than 1,000 volunteers and teachers who change more
than 70,000 lives each year.
DSS doesn’t end at kids. The organisation educates parents on the importance of sending their kids to school. Its efforts
have brought education to thousands of students in the last two decades. Their belief in education for all has not only changed
children’s lives but also continued the fight against one of the biggest problems India faces. All children have the right to an
education, and DSS is providing just that.
8. Why is the organization named “Door Step School”?
A. It is different from formal schools.
B. It is usually built near formal schools.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司C. It sets up schools in areas with large populations.
D. It provides education wherever children can easily go.

C. The management of Door Step School. D. The future of Door Step School.

I have dreamed of taking a trip to Hawaii since I graduated, but the best thing always needs waiting.
I took a trip with my friends to Haleakala National Park, which lies in Hawaii.

unbelievable. Until today, I dare say that it is the most impressive sunrise in my life. However, waiting in the morning darkness
is also one memory I can’t forget forever.

As the mother of an eleven-year-old girl, I have read several books that tell parents how to bring up a girl to be beautiful,
elegant, confident, and rich. However, I have always believed that girls need to be brave above all else, but this is easier said
than done.
I still remember I couldn’t see the screen directly when my daughter switched to the animal channel, which was
broadcasting a show about snakes. I stood as far away from the TV as possible, too scared to open my eyes. However, my
little angel was not scared of the snakes. In fact, she watched the show with a keen interest. I was relieved that my daughter
didn’t get too many genetic phobias(遗传恐惧症). Even to this day, she is still obsessed with challenging herself with new
things.
This year, I got a chance to study in Singapore for six months. After the novelty of the first few days had gone, I found
myself missing my family. With the summer vacation approaching, my husband agreed to make good use of the fact that I was
staying in Singapore. He brought our daughter out to visit me and to enjoy the new experience in a new country.
The reunion day finally came. My husband and my daughter arrived in the second week of July. I was so looking forward
to seeing them. I had made many preparations for their visit. On the first day, I arranged for us to see Gardens by the Bay. When
we walked out of the MRT station, we were amazed by the sight of the Super Trees. When my daughter saw lots of people
walking on the Skyway, she couldn’t help shouting excitedly that she wanted to have a try. The Skyway is a 22-meter-high
suspension bridge from which you can enjoy a birds eye view. Last time I came here with my friends, I firmly rejected their
repeated attempts to challenge me to go up there. It was like the day with the snakes all over again. But could I really reject my
little angel?

My daughter was waiting for my reply. I was secretly very worried. But my daughter kept begging me and I could not bear
to reject her. Bravery was the most significant quality that I wanted her to possess. Her curiosity was so strong that I couldn’t
resist. I nodded slightly, and my daughter’s frowning face slowly broke into a smile. My response surprised my husband, who
reacted with the wildest excitement as we walked towards the Skyway. When I stepped on it, I found myself horrified by the
height. I grabbed the railing, almost unable to move.
Halfway across the bridge, I had to stop. My heart beat wildly, casting scared glances down the bridge. My husband and
daughter held my hands tightly. I walked as though I were drunk. But their firm gaze built up my confidence and we kept going
together. “Mom, look, it’s so beautiful.” What I saw there filled my soul with joy. The bay spread out far below me. Beyond it
stood the tall and beautiful skyscrapers. I looked down at my little girl who taught her mother how to be brave, and breathed a
sigh of relief.
