He was often the first to raise his hand for a project, appeared to have infinite capacity to get high-quality work done, and offered to assist his peers and direct reports. Oliver seemed to be all-in; 更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂optimistic, energetic, supportive, and someone who constituted to everyone. However, the more Oliver participated, the more others around him were slighted. Instead of sparking creatively in others, his ideas outshone everyone else’s. He consumed time speaking in meetings, exhausting the oxygen level in the room. Oliver felt pumped up by how many of his ideas had been deployed but frustrated by others’ lack of sufficient effort. While the CEO appreciated Oliver’s yield, she recognized he had to change his approach to keep the rest of the team productive. In response, Oliver worked out a plan to help address his cooperation challenges using techniques many other executives had deployed. When we over-participate, we believe that we're being helpful. However, “helpfulness” is defined by the recipient, not the giver. Instead of improving his relationships with colleagues, Oliver robbed them of fulfillment by furnishing masses of ideas. They felt discouraged, interrupted, and excluded. To fix the issue, Oliver learned the value of asking two specific questions before offering his own ideas: “What have you thought of?” and “What would be most helpful for you at this point?” Surveying others to understand what’s helpful illuminates better avenues for our contribution: directly through our ideas, through coaching colleagues to create their own, or by building on what someone else has generated. 22. What can we learn about Oliver? A. He lacks creativity. B. He favours competition. C. He works enthusiastically. D. He behaves irresponsibly. 23. What is a result of Oliver’s over-participation? A. The team generated more diverse ideas. B. Oliver’s colleagues became less productive. C. Group meetings were more time-consuming. D. Oliver’s teammates were inspired to work harder. 24. What technique did Oliver employ to fix the issue? A. Hearing others’ voices. B. Providing specific ideas. C. Strengthening his leadership. D. Building strong relationships. 25. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. When Leaders Fail to Keep the Team Productive B. When Contributing Gets in the Way of Cooperating C. How a Great Team Welcomes Ideas in a Discussion D. How Active Participation Gives Rise to a Better Team C 23. B 24. A 25. 根据第一段“Oliver, the CTO of a high-tech company, loved to participate in all conversations at the C-suite level, regardless of topic. He was often the first to raise his hand for a project, appeared to have infinite capacity to get high-quality work done, and offered to assist his peers and direct reports. Oliver seemed to be all-in; optimistic, energetic, supportive, and someone who constituted to everyone.(Oliver是一家高科技公司的首席技术官,他喜欢参与所有的高层对话,无论是什么话题。 根据第二段“However, the more Oliver participated, the more others around him were slighted. Instead of sparking creatively in others, his ideas outshone everyone else’s. He consumed time speaking in meetings, exhausting the oxygen level in the room. Oliver felt pumped up by how many of his ideas had been deployed but frustrated by others’ lack of sufficient effort. 根据最后一段中“To fix the issue, Oliver learned the value of asking two specific questions before offering his own ideas: “What have you thought of?” and “What would be most helpful for you at this point?” Surveying others to understand what's helpful illuminates better avenues for our contribution: directly through our ideas, through coaching colleagues to create their own, or by building on what someone else has generated.(为了解决这个问题,Oliver学会了在提出自己的想法之前问两个具 更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂体问题的价值:“你有什么想法?” 故选A。 根据最后一段“When we over-participate, we believe that we're being helpful. However, “helpfulness” is defined by the recipient, not the giver. Instead of improving his relationships with colleagues, Oliver robbed them of fulfillment by furnishing masses of ideas. The decision to go to college still makes sense for most, but a recent survey showed that only 16% Americans think a four-year college degree course prepares students well for a high-paying job in the modern economy. To some extent, technology seems to be complicating the picture. A paper published by several Canadian economists questions optimistic assumptions about demand for non-routine work and shows that since 2000 the share of employment accounted for by high-skilled jobs in America has been falling. This analysis supports the view that technology has come as a blow to employment. Skilled and unskilled workers alike are in trouble. Those with a better education are still more likely to find work, but there is now a fair chance that it will be unenjoyable. Those who never made it to college face being squeezed out of the workforce altogether. This is the argument of the techno- pessimists(科技悲观者), who calculated that 47% of existing jobs in America are very likely to be influenced by automation. There is another, less pessimistic possibility. James Bessen, an economist at Boston University, has worked out the effects of automation on specific professions and finds that since 1980 employment has been growing faster in occupations that use computers than in those that do not. Progressive automation can actually increase demand by reducing costs. But even though technology may not destroy jobs on the whole, it does force change upon many people. In many occupations it has become essential to acquire new skills as established ones become out-of- date. Burning Glass Technologies, a Boston-based startup that analyses labor markets by obtaining data from online job advertisements, finds that the biggest demand is for new combinations of skills-what its boss, Matt Sigelman, calls “hybrid jobs". The composition of new jobs is also changing rapidly. A college degree at the start of a working career does not answer the need for the continuous acquisition of new skills, especially as career spans(持续时间) are lengthening. Vocational training(职业 培训) is good at giving people job-specific skills, but those, too, will need to be updated over and over again during a career lasting decades. Vocational training has a role, but training someone early to do one thing all their lives is not the answer to lifelong learning. Add all of this up, and it becomes clear that times have got tougher for workers of all kinds. A college degree is still a necessity for many jobs, but employers often do not trust it enough to hire workers just on the strength of that. In many occupations workers on company payrolls face the prospect that their existing skills will become outdated. 26. What can we learn from the paper conducted by the Canadian economists? A. Employment has been shaken by technology. B. College degree is a necessity in career success. C. Skilled workers are no longer required in most American industries. D. Techno-pessimism paves the way for future technology development. 27. What does James Bessen believe according to the text? A. Increased demand can bring about cost reduction. B. Progressive automation is beneficial to companies. C. Computer has always been an essential factor in employment. D. Technology advancement has a positive impact on most people. 28. Which of the following may Burning Glass Technologies agree with? A. The job market will have a bright future. B. The composition of new jobs is shaped by technology. C. Online job advertisements require a precise data analysis. D. Acquisition of new skills is essential in current job market. 29. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Lifelong Learning: an Economic Priority B. Technology Revolution: the Way to Success C. College Degree: a Guarantee for Career Change D. Vocational Training: a Blessing for Job Seekers 【答案】 26. A 27. B 28. D 29. 根据第二段中的“This analysis supports the view that technology has come as a blow to employment.(这一分析支持了一种观点,即技术已经对就业造成了打击。)” 故选A项。 根据第三段中的“James Bessen, an economist at Boston University, has worked out the effects of automation on specific professions and finds that since 1980 employment has been growing faster in occupations that use computers than in those that do not. 根据第四段中的“In many occupations it has become essential to acquire new skills as established ones become out-of-date. Burning Glass Technologies, a Boston-based startup that analyses labor markets by obtaining data from online job advertisements, finds that the biggest demand is for new combinations of skills—what its boss, Matt Sigelman, calls ‘hybrid jobs’.(在许多职业中,由于现有技能 已经过时,获得新技能已成为必要。 根据最后一段“A college degree is still a necessity for many jobs, but employers often do not trust it enough to hire workers just on the strength of that. In many occupations workers on company payrolls face the prospect that their existing skills will become outdated.(大学学历仍然是许多工作的必 要条件,但雇主往往不太相信这一点,不会仅仅凭学历就雇佣员工。在许多职业中,公司员工面临 着他们现有技能将会过时的前景)根据倒数第二段“Vocational training has a role, but training someone early to do one thing all their lives is not the answer to lifelong learning.”(职业培训有一定的 作用,但早期培训一个人一辈子只做一件事并不是终身学习的答案。)。 故选A项。
