{#{QQABYQAEggCAAgAAAAhCEQFSCAKQkhCCASgGwEAMMAAASBFABAA=}#}Fathers can give their children an educational advantage at primary school by reading,
drawing and playing with them, according to a newly published report. Research led by the
University of Leeds has found that children do better at primary school if their fathers regularly
spend time with them on interactive engagement activities like reading, playing, telling stories,
drawing and singing.
Analysing primary school test scores for five- and seven-year-olds, the researchers used a
representative sample of nearly 5,000 mother-father households in England from the Millenium
Cohort Study.
According to the research, dads who regularly drew, played and read with their
three-year-olds helped their children do better at school by age five. Dads being involved at age
fivealso helped improvescores in seven-year-olds’Key StageAssessments.
Dr Helen Norman, who led the research, said, “Mothers still tend to assume the primary
care role and therefore tend to do the most childcare, but if fathers enthusiastically engage in
childcare too, it significantly increases the likelihood of children getting better grades in primary
school. This is why encouraging and supporting fathers to share childcare with the mother, from
an early stage inthe child’s life, is critical.”
Dads’involvement impacted positively on their children’s school achievement regardless of
thechild’s gender, race, age in theschool year and householdincome, according to thereport.
There were different effects when mums and dads took part in the same activities — the
data showed that mums had more of an impact on young children’s emotional and social
behaviors thaneducational achievement.
The researchers recommend that dads carve out as much time as they can to engage in
interactive activities with their children each week. For busy, working dads, even just ten minutes
a day could potentially have educational benefits. They also recommend that schools and early
years education providers should take both parents’contact details (where possible) and develop
strategies toengage fathers.
38.Whomaygive his children themost educational advantage at primary school?
A.Afather who is totallybusywith hiswork.
B.Afather who isreally good at playing basketball.
C.Afather who has absolutely lowhousehold income.
D.Afather who actively shares childcare withthe mother.
39.Whatadvice dothe researchers offer onchildren’s early years education?
A.Dads should spare ten minutes aday toapparently benefit kids.
B.Dads should maximizetimetointeract with theirkids each week.
C.Schoolsshouldtakestrategies to involveparents in management.

Have you ever heard someone say, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”, or
give you advice about why it’s vital to start the day with a healthy breakfast? 41 Is it
really that important? In asense, itreally matters.
Energy restoration
The word “breakfast” comes from “breaking the fast” — the idea of ending the period in
which we didn’t eat during the night. When we sleep, our body consumes some of our natural
food storage. 42 So, inthat way,a healthy breakfast makes sense.
Weightmanagement
There are also many often-quoted studies which seem to link a state of obesity with not having
breakfast. 43 In a US study, 50,000 people were monitored over seven years, and those
who ate a healthy breakfast were found to have a lower BMI, which seems to suggest that
breakfast may indeed help people maintain ahealthy weight.
Betterbrainfunction
44 Breakfast is also associated with improved brain function, including attention
and language.Areview of 54 studies found that eating breakfast can improve memory and one of
theresearchers says there isreasonable evidence that breakfast does improveattention.
What’s most important is what we eat for breakfast. High-protein breakfasts have been
found particularly effective in reducing food consumption later in the day. However, studies
found that there is noagreement onwhat type ofbreakfast ishealthier. 45
A.Breakfast helps us refill the exhausted stores.
B.Weight-loss islikely to cause them health problems.
C.Breakfasthas been foundto affect more than just weight.
D.Breakfast types don’tmatter as much as simply eating something.
E.Thus, itis suggested that a healthy breakfast can control and loseweight.
F.Many peopleare recommended to managetheir weight bynot having meals.
G.It seems that this feast, formany of us, isnecessary for ourday to start well.

At eleven years old, my main concern was money. Where could I get it? How much did I
need to buy the new must-have thing my classmates either had or wanted? I went to my mom.
“Mom, I need more money,” I said, leaning against the kitchen counter while she cooked dinner.

{#{QQABYQAEggCAAgAAAAhCEQFSCAKQkhCCASgGwEAMMAAASBFABAA=}#}“You think you need a job?” Mom asked with a smile. The next day, she had an answer. “Your
grandmother will pay you to help her deliver lunch each day to the elderly.”Yes!Ipumped (挥舞)

When my grandmother picked me up, I couldn’t wait to start my new job.” It’s simple. We
pick up a large container full of hot meals in a nearby town and then we go on our delivery route.”
After dozens of meals were arranged in the backseat, my grandmother drove us to our first stop.
The first house didn’t look nice, but I shrugged and kept going. I didn’t have to live there, just
deliver food there. This was how I would make money. I nearly jumped when I glanced over to
see a tiny old woman in the corner looking at me. She sat hunched (缩成一团) over in a rocking
chair and had more wrinkles (皱纹) than I’d ever seen in my life. “Who is this nice young lady?”
She asked grandmother. I just stood there holding the food, unsure what to do. My grandmother
guided me inside to place it on her kitchen table. The house smelled bad and old like the antique
stores my mom liked to visit, but I never liked because even breathing in the dusty air made me
feel dirty.Iheld mybreath untilwe went out.
The next stop was much the same and the next. The houses varied in size and shape, some
were nicer than others, but the same wrinkly people waited for their meals. Each person smiled at
meandthanked meas I hurried to get out of there.

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容回答问题, 使之构成一篇完整的故事。
72. Yes! I pumped (挥舞) my fist into the air.和 When my grandmother picked me up, I couldn’t wait to start
my new job.
73. The house smelled bad and old like the antique stores my mom liked to visit, but I never liked because even
breathing in the dusty air made me feel dirty. I held my breath until we went out.
74. Grandma might say, “I’ve been doing this job because it’s important to care for others, especially those who
can’t easily care for themselves. It’s a way to give back to the community and to teach you the value of
kindness and service.”
75. After realizing how great the job is, I felt a sense of pride and fulfillment, knowing that I was making a
difference in the lives of the elderly. I also felt more appreciative of the simple acts of kindness and the impact
they have on others.
76. I held the food with my both hands, followed my grandmother’s guidance and placed it gently on her
kitchen table.

1.【原文】W: Can I put my books in your classroom for now? I don’t have time to go back up a floor and still
make it to the bus on time.
M: Sure. That way, we can go down together and sit beside each other on the bus.
2.【原文】M: How is the medicine I gave you working out? Sometimes it doesn’t work, or makes people
tired.
W: It works fine. My only complaint is that I don’t feel like eating anything.
3.【原文】W: John, please save the rest of the cookies for your sister. I made ten cookies. There are only three
left.
M: I didn’t eat them all! Dad had four!
4.【原文】M: Lucky you! You got the window seat!
W: Why don’t we change places? I prefer to get up and walk around during the flight. Here, come rest by the
window. It’s going to be a big conference. You’ve been looking tired since the meeting yesterday.
5.【原文】W: Hi. Are all novels in the fiction section, even new arrivals? I’m looking for something by a new
novelist.
M: I’m not sure. I just came here to study.
W: Sorry to bother you. I thought you were a librarian!
6-7.【原文】M: Thanks for meeting me here.
W: Yeah, it’s just like old times. But the place looks really different.M: They gave it a new look. What do you think?
W: The black and white floor is really nice. But I miss the piano by the front entrance.
M: The piano is still here. They got it repaired and moved it into the dining room. There’s jazz every Saturday
now.
W: Oh, cool! We’ll have to come back. I have to say I love the old design, with the red walls. But live music is
a great addition.
M: Let’s see if the food is just as good now as it was then. What are you going to order?
8-9.【原文】W: Bill, please. You’re annoying the people behind us!
M: I can’t help it! These actors are so funny! I haven’t laughed this hard for a long time.
W: During the second half, you’ll need to be a lot quieter.
M: OK. OK. Hey, what’s wrong? Were you crying?
W: I didn’t find that scene funny. It reminded me of a fight I had with my friend Sarah on a trip to France. I
haven’t spoken to Sarah since then. It was a lot like what we just saw, when the characters were at that dinner
party.
M: The disagreement we saw on stage was full of humor and affection. I can see you really care about Sarah.
You should give her a call. You’re as stubborn as Dad!
W: I really miss Sarah!
M: After the play, why don’t you call her?
10-12.【原文】W: Thanks for coming to the studio today, Mr. Larson. Why don’t you tell me about your last
position?
M: Well, I started working at Smith Electronics in Chicago right after I graduated from college. I was in the
sales department, and even though I was good at it, I wasn’t really happy. After one year, I was moved to the
HR department.
W: Was that a better fit?
M: Yes. I prefer talking to people face-to-face, and I enjoy solving problems. I did quite well in that position.
W: So, why did you leave?
M: I had been working at Smith for four years straight. Then I wanted to take some time off, so I went to Paris.
My three-week vacation turned into a two-year stay!
W: Wow! What made you come back to the United States? And why is it a good time for you to join Branson
Labs?
M: When my father started Branson Labs here in Los Angeles forty years ago, he wanted to pass it down to me.
At my graduation dinner, I promised him that I would take over when the time was right. I’m finally ready to
make good on that promise.
13-16.【原文】W: I have a special deal that says three drinks for the price of one. I printed it from your
website, see? So, those three Cokes should only cost me $2, not $6.
M: Oh, I didn’t know about the deal. My mistake. I’ll adjust that right now.
W: I also have special deals for the soup, bread, and sandwich meat. They should all be cheaper.M: For some reason, our system doesn’t show the deals when the item is scanned. I’ll have to type in the
special deals by hand. One moment.
W: Thanks. I need to save all the money I can. I just got laid off.
M: I’m sorry to hear that, Miss.
W: I went to Harvard and studied business. I never thought I’d be out of work when I graduated.
M: I also work as an accountant for a technology company. We are looking to hire some new accountants in
various positions.
W: Really? Wow, I guess it’s a good thing I complained to you about getting fired.
M: Why don’t you come by the company office? It’s at 3300 Main Street. How does 1:00 p.m. tomorrow
sound?
W: Sounds great. I’ll see you then, and thank you for the opportunity!

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m pleased to announce the winner of the song-writing competition. As you
probably know, every year, young songwriters from our town enter our annual spring competition held here in
the beautiful Brook Theater. When local musician Fred McGill started the event four years ago, we had no idea
how much it would grow. In 2017, over 100 people sent in their songs. This year the number of people who
participated doubled. It’s wonderful to see the talent and energy of the next generation. Our judges were
amazed by the musical skills they saw and heard. Congratulations to all the teenagers who sent in their songs. It
was a difficult choice, but our committee has made a selection. Let’s clap our hands for Maryanne James!
Maryanne, where are you? Please join me on stage! There she is! Maryanne, we loved the way you sang about
everything from the colors of your garden to the eyes of children. Please accept this prize. We hope it
encourages you to continue writing songs when you start music school in the fall. Finally, we’d like to ask you
to perform a song for our audience.
