I’d finally got some alone time as a new mom. I put on my running shoes and I found my rhythm as my feet
hit the ground. My adrenaline (肾上腺素) kicked in as I told myself, “This is my comeback.” Prior to giving
birth to a baby, I had been a runner since my 20s. Running made me feel free and it brought me a sense of peace I
couldn’t find anywhere else. The harder my feet worked, the more I relaxed.
,
Now as a new mom in my late 30s, I was picking running back up to prove to myself I was still the old me.
However, it was not easy. My legs were weak as I shuffled (拖着脚走) down the track. I felt defeated. The old
me had never felt so far away. Running felt like a burden, and the joy was far away from me. Even worse, I felt like
a living dead at home. My son wasn’t sleeping through the night, which was exhausting all my extra energy.
However, I kept going. I went out for a run again and again. A few times a week, I pulled on my shoes and
slowly, my one mile route turned into a 5kilometer. Gone were the debates in my head over whether I was a good
mom and whether my house would ever be clean again. Running just let me be.
I had signed up for the half marathon I ran annually before my son was born as a motivation. When I began
running, the marathon route felt so long, but then suddenly, it was over. When I crossed the finish line, I felt like a
champion wearing my participant’s medal. My finish time was just a number; what mattered more to me was the
journey.
Through my running experience, I have realized that nothing is impossible to a willing heart, not only running,
but also anything else.

A. Proud. B. Determined. C. Outgoing. D. Modest.
6. What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph?
A. The author occasionally joined in the marathon before.
B. Half marathon seemed longer than expected all the way.
C. What is worth doing well is to achieve high scores.
D. What the author can gain during the process matters most.7. What message does the article convey to readers?
A. Where there is a will, there is a way. B. A good beginning is half success.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. Time lost cannot be regained.

Concrete has served as the foundation stone of the construction industry for hundreds of years. However, the
process of producing concrete is one of the most environmentally unfriendly processes in the world. In the process,
not only is carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) released into the air by the energy used to heat the limestone, but the
limestone itself also gives out a huge amount of the element.
Luckily, a number of start-ups throughout the world are using creative thinking to make the construction
industry a whole lot more friendly for the planet.
A Canadian company called CarbonCure, has found a way to inject (注入) concrete with carbon dioxide itself.
Not only does this trap the carbon dioxide into the concrete, keeping it from running away into the atmosphere, but
it also creates a super strong material called calcium carbonate, which reduces the total amount of concrete that
needs to be used.
California-based Brimstone, is creating carbon-negative concrete by doing away with limestone entirely and
instead using silicate rock, a material that does not release carbon dioxide when heated. Instead, the process
produces magnesium (镁) , which absorbs carbon dioxide, as the basis for their concrete.
Additionally, researchers at Australia’s RMIT University have recently released a study showing that adding
coffee grounds instead of sand to concrete could make it much stronger, reducing both the amount of sand used, as
well as the amount of concrete that would need to be used in the final product.
The biggest barrier at this point is convincing members of the industry that the new types of concrete are safe
to be used, according to Stacy Smedley, director at a nonprofit focused on decarbonizing construction.
Hopefully these new solutions to the environmental problems of concrete will soon be widely adopted. Given
the significant part the construction industry has in releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, great
improvements can be made when more environmentally-friendly materials are used.
8. What is the environmental issue associated with traditional concrete production?
A. The high demand for energy. B. The processing of waste materials.
C. The mass release of carbon dioxide. D. The use of non-renewable resources.
9. How does CarbonCure deal with the environmental impact of concrete production?
A. By using silicate rock as the basis. B. By putting carbon dioxide into concrete.
C. By replacing sand with coffee grounds. D. By absorbing carbon dioxide with magnesium.
10. According to Smedley, what is the major challenge facing these solutions?A. Difficulty in making profits. B. Convincing the public of the convenience.
C. Lack of funding for research. D. Removing the industry members’ safety concerns.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To promote an alternative to concrete. B. To advocate environmental protection.
C. To introduce new ways to produce concrete. D. To emphasize the significance of creativity.

Endangered polar bears are breeding (繁殖) with grizzly bears (灰熊), creating “pizzly” bears, which is being
driven by climate change, scientists say.
As the world warms and Arctic sea ice thins, starving polar bears are being forced ever further south, where
they meet grizzlies, whose ranges are expanding northwards. And with that growing contact between the two come
increasing hybrids (杂交种).
With characteristics that could give the hybrids an advantage in warming northern habitats, some scientists
guess that they could be here to stay. “Usually, hybrids aren’t better suited to their environments than their parents,
but these hybrids are able to search for a broader range of food sources,” Larisa DeSantis, an associate professor of
biological sciences at Vanderbilt University, told Live Science.
The rise of “pizzly” bears appears with polar bears’ decline: their numbers are estimated to decrease by more
than 30% in the next 30 years. This sudden fall is linked partly to “pizzly” bears taking up polar bears’ ranges,
where they outcompete them, but also to polar bears’ highly specialized diets.
“Polar bears mainly consumed soft foods even during the Medieval Warm Period, a previous period of rapid
warming,” DeSantis said, referring to fat meals such as seals. “Although all of these starving polar bears are trying
to find alternative food sources, like seabird eggs, it could be a tipping point for their survival.” Actually, the
calories they gain from these sources do not balance out those they burn from searching for them. This could result
in a habitat ready for the hybrids to move in and take over, leading to a loss in biodiversity if polar bears are
replaced.
“We’re having massive impacts with climate change on species,” DeSantis said. “The polar bear is telling us
how bad things are. In some sense, “pizzly” bears could be a sad but necessary compromise given current warming
trends.”
12. Why do polar bears move further south?
A. To create hybrids. B. To expand territory.
C. To relieve hunger. D. To contact grizzlies.
13. What makes “pizzly” bears adapt to natural surroundings better than their parents?
A. Broader habitats. B. More food options.C. Climate preference. D. Improved breeding ability.
14. What does the underlined phrase “a tipping point” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. A rare chance. B. A critical stage.
C. A positive factor. D. A constant change.
15. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Polar bears are changing diets for climate change.
B. Polar bears have already adjusted to climate change.
C. “Pizzly” bears are on the rise because of global warming.
D. “Pizzly”bears have replaced polar bears for global warming.

“This is enough! I cannot stand it anymore!” My owner’s mother shouted at the top of her lungs. “Wolfie has to
go! Have a dog that’s so big and eats so much! I cannot stand him urinating (小便) all over the house instead of in
the small basin at his kennel (狗窝)!”
“But…” My owner cried.
“No buts, Bob!” His mother shouted. Her cold tone indicated she meant business.
Now think back on your most depressing moment. Then multiply that feeling of depression by a hundred. That
was how I felt at that time. I would be separated from my beloved owner, Bob. This was the end and I had no one to
blame but myself.
Lowering his head in sadness, Bob dragged himself towards his room and slowly closed the door. With a click,
he locked it. I went back to my kennel and lay inside. I sighed deeply, tears welling up in my eyes. Soon, I would
have no owner and I would have to find shelter, food and water by myself. Poor me.
After a while, I heard footsteps that were becoming louder by the second. I raised my head and saw Bob walking
towards me with a leash (皮带) in his left hand.
“We are going to the market,” Bob told me as he tied one end of the leash around my neck.
A walk would make me feel better. I followed Bob and his mother to the market. Soon, we reached the long road
that we had to cross to get to the market. After waiting for ages, the traffic light finally turned green. While crossing
the road, Bob walked slowly as he seemed about leaving me. We were soon falling behind his mother.
From the comer of my eye, I saw something moving closer and closer at great speed. It was a red car speeding
towards Bob’s mother! Bob also saw it but his mother was unaware of the danger approaching her! I caught a glance of
the look of horror on Bob’s face. He had turned white in horror.
注意:
1. 续写词数应该为150个左右;

Knowing that you’re a devoted fan of traditional Chinese culture, I’m writing to invite you to attend a dragon
dance class organized by our Dance Club.
,
The class is scheduled for this Saturday from 3 pm to 6 pm at the student center. Throughout the class we’ll
dive into the charm of dragon dance, mastering the rhythmic movements and coordinated steps that bring the dragon
to life. Beyond a dance class, it’s a chance to deepen your understanding of Chinese culture.I would be delighted to have you join me for the class. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,

I needed to do something! Then, an idea struck me. Without hesitation, I let out a loud bark and broke away
from Bob. I raced towards Bob’s mother. With an extra burst of energy, I caught up to her, leapt and pushed her aside.
She staggered forward but soon balanced herself. The car sped past, barely missing me by an inch. Lucky me! Bob
rushed towards his mother and me. We got to the safety of the pavement. “I…I cannot believe this. Wol…Wolfie
saved my life,” Bob’s mother cried, still in shock from her near-death experience.
She looked down at me, feeling touched. I responded with a bark. Her eyes softened and she gave me a hug.
“Let’s continue to keep him,” she said. I could not believe my ears. I barked and wagged my tail excitedly while
Bob’s eyes widened in delight. He was jumping for joy. Now, I have turned over a new leaf. I make sure that I
urinate in the small basin in my kennel and the whole family now treats me like a hero, but I feel that what I did was
just something anyone would have done in my position.
