Animal rescuer and cinematographer Douglas Thron’s passion for animals began when he was a little
kid. “I started rescuing orphaned baby animals,” Thron says. “And I wanted to be a wildlife
cinematographer.”
WhenThron grew up, he did just that, working for shows like Discovery Channel’s SharkWeek, filming
the great white sharks off the coast of Santa Cruz, California. But Thron says it was the fire in Paradise in
California in 2018 that “pushed” him to do animal rescue work, putting his aerial cinematography skills to
good use.
At the time, Thron was filming a man who was rescuing cats after the fire using an infrared hand-held
camera. The camera uses heat to detect the animals at night. Thron and the man talked about how
incredible it would be to put one on a drone(无人机) to detect animals more easily. “The animal’s body
temperature will glow on the screen and you can pick them out among the bricks and stones,” explains
Thron.
The first animal Thron ever rescued in this way was a dog in the Bahamas after a category-5 hurricane
hit, which wiped out hundreds of houses.Thron putan infrared scope onadrone and found the dog.
“The drone really shaves off critical time so that the really badly hurt animals are able to be rescued,”
Thron says. Once the scope picks up the “heat signature of an animal”, Thron turns a spotlight on the
animal and zoomsinonit, sohe and therescue crew can go and save theanimal.
Thron has basically been “going non-stop sincethen”.HisTVshow,Doug tothe Rescue, shows some of
his heart-warming animal rescues, including after Hurricane Laura in Louisiana in 2020 and after fires in
Northern California and Oregon. Thron also helped rescue koalas after fires damaged parts ofAustralia in
2020.

Did you know the basic structure of your brain is very similar to that of other mammals? This
surprising fact says a lot about animal thought because havingbrains and hormones (素) similar tothose of
humans makes other mammals act, feel, and think much likewe do.
In fact, animals actually possess cognition, the ability to acquire knowledge. Elephants consciously
learn which plants to eat from older elephants by observing them and tasting the foods they eat. So, while
ourexperience ofthe world might differfrom theirs, consciousness isnot aprivilege (特权)limited to us.
And brains can even teach us about how animals feel. For instance, oxytocin, a kind of hormone, is
essential in forming bonds in humans as well as other mammals. So, if it's blocked in an individual's brain,
they're likely to feel alone. The fact that the same is true for humans and animals suggests a similarity both
inour brains and our feelings.
But what about the animals with tiny brains? Can they feel too?Actually, brain size is a poor indicator
of animal intelligence. A better one is how much an animal's brain has in common with ours. That's
because a larger brain, while it means more computing power, isn't necessarily helpful. For example, tuna
have smaller brains than dolphins but are just as good at hunting. Large brains are necessary for being
social and cooperating with others. That's because when individuals are responsible for the survival of a
group, a bigger or social brain is needed. In the case of animals that do have social brains, like elephants,
whales, and dolphins, it's hard to deny that they're thinking and feeling like humans when their brains so
closely resemble ours.
28.Whyare elephants mentioned in paragraph 2?
A.Toillustrateanimals’ability to learn. B.Tointroduceelephants’eating habits.
C.Tocompare humans and animals. D.Toprove elephants are social animals.
29.Whatwill oxytocin's being reduced lead to?
A. Poorer social ability. B. Increased loneliness.
C. Improved hunting skills. D. Strongerbonds with others.
30.Whatdoes theunderlined phrase “Abetter one”inparagraph 4refer to?
A.Alargerbrain. B.Asharper sense.
C.Amore brilliantmind. D.Amore reliableindicator.
31.Whatmessage does thistextmainly intend to convey?
A. Brain sizeis vital to intelligence.
B. Consciousnessis not humans’privilege.
C. Mammalsmay thinkand feel likehumans.
D.Animalsshare similarbrain structure with humans.

Working with ARIA Research, a startup developing vision for the blind, Phoebe Peng is using
technologically advanced human echolocation (回声定位) that enables blind users to perceive their
surroundings inprecise detail.
The process uses event cameras which, unlike normal cameras that take complete images of a scene,
track changes in an image over time, making them ideal for the observation of small objects like table
tennis balls. The images are then processed into sound using a specialised algorithm (算法). This is then
communicated back to the player via a lot of loudspeakers, ultimately with the aim of allowing players to
track the ball and movements using sounds.
According to Peng, table tennis makes a perfect test case for the kind of technology being developed
byARIA Research. “Table tennis has been played for decades as a more accessible version of tennis. The
sport is beginner-friendly while maintaining a rich level of competitive play. However, like many sports, it
remains difficult for people who suffer vision loss or have low vision,” said Ms Peng, who will soon
completea Bachelor ofEngineering inSoftware Engineering.
“The small size of the ball and table, along with the movement of the ball in 3D space, are things that
make table tennis difficult to play for those with low vision and complete blindness,” said Peng, who is
completing the work for her degree. “Making this sport more accessible while also exploring the potential
ofevent cameras were mytwo biggest motivators,”she said.
In one study, using two perfectly positioned cameras, Ms Peng was able to identify and track a ball in
three dimensions in real time. She then fed that data into an algorithm controlling the loudspeakers
standing along thesides ofthetable, which created asound field matching the position oftheball.
While the results are promising, more experimentation will be needed before the system will be ready
for actual play.“There are limitations on howaccurately people can perceive sound localisation. What type
of sound should be used? Should the sound be continuous? This is what we’ll be tackling in the next stage
ofdevelopment,” said Ms Peng.
32.Howare event cameras different from normal ones?
A.They can have sounds located. B.They are linked with loudspeakers.
C.They constantly followimage changes. D.They takecomplete images ofascene.
33.Whatmakes tabletennis aperfect test case forthe research?
A. Its uniquefeature. B. Its fiercecompetition.
C. Its technical complexity. D. Its beginner-friendliness.
34.Whatis thelast paragraph mainlyabout concerning thestudy?

C. Its practical applications. D. Its technological challenge.
35.Whatcould bethebest titlefor thetext?

I turned back and tried to hold back my tears. But sorrow overwhelmed me, and I couldn’t keep
them in—I broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. Soon, soft sobs turned into loud cries as hopelessness
washed over me. I couldn’t help wondering why everyone else could find a job except me. Watching me
cry, the man looked shocked; his earlier impatience was gone, replaced by concern. He stepped closer, his
expression gentle, and apologized for his rude words. He told me that everything would be okay, urging

Putting a five-dollar bill in my hand, he left. This time, I was the one who stood frozen in shock. I

像人类一样思考和感受” 最能概括主旨;
干扰项:B(意识不是人类特权)、D(动物与人类大脑结构相似)都是文章的 “部分论据”,而非

故选A。
There are limitations onhowaccurately people can perceive
sound localisation. What type of sound should be used? Should the sound be continuous? This is what
we’ll be tackling inthe next stage ofdevelopment(人们感知声音定位的准确度是有限的。
Working with ARIA Research, a startup
developing vision for the blind, Phoebe Peng is using technologically advanced human echolocation (回
声定位) that enables blind users to perceive their surroundings in precise detail.(Phoebe Peng 与 ARIA
Research(一家为盲人开发视力的初创公司)合作,使用技术先进的人类回声定位技术,使盲人用户

movement of the ball in 3D space, are things that make table tennis difficult to play for those with low
visionand complete blindness,” said Peng, who is completing the work for her degree. “Making this sport
moreaccessible whilealso exploring the potential of event cameras were my two biggest motivators,” she

选项“Technology Opens upBlindTableTennis(科技开启了盲人乒乓球)”。故选A。

M: This is the afternoon traffic update. A major accident involving several cars has occurred on the
Harbour Bridge into the city, and it is now blocked in both directions. All traffic heading into the city is
being directed to use another road, causing long delays of over an hour. Drivers are strongly advised to
avoid this area and use a different bridge instead. Separately, on the M4 Highway, a large truck has
stopped working in the main road near a popular exit, resulting in very slow traffic for those traveling
away from the city. Emergency services are there to help, but delays are expected to last through the
evening rush hour. Lastly, due to necessary repairs earlier today, train services on the T1 Western Line
have started again but are running behind schedule by up to twenty minutes. Passengers should check the
transport app for thelatest information before they travel.
