A fin whale body that was washed ashore at San Diego’s Pacific Beach was discovered to have many bite
marks from killer whales, which could have contributed to its death, according to the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). At first, NOAA researchers deemed the marks might be from sharks, but
further analysis (分析) by experts showed that these were actually rake (耙子) marks, an unusual feature of killer
whales, as stated by NOAA spokesperson Michael Milstein.
While it is possible that killer whales played a role in the fin whale’s death, NOAA has not confirmed that they
were the definitive cause. Milstein noted that there are documented instances where killer whales have chased fin
whales, causing them to beach themselves in attempts to escape. This suggests that killer whales could have
influenced the whale’s fate (命运), but there is no certainty that they were the direct cause of death.
Additionally, NOAA reported sightings of a group of about a dozen killer whales along the Southern
California coast, including San Diego. Boaters in the area filmed footage of a group of killer whales actively
chasing and likely feeding on dolphins near Torrey Pines. This indicates that killer whales are currently active in the
region and may be involved in various predatory (捕食性的) behaviors.
The fin whale’s body was discovered on December 10. Lifeguards spent the entire day trying to drag the whale
back out to sea, but despite their efforts, the body returned to shore at least once. The whale was observed bleeding
from its side, and attempts to pull it away using a small boat connected to its tail were unsuccessful. Fin whales,
which are the second-largest whale species on Earth after blue whales, are considered endangered and relatively
few in number. These whales can weigh up to 100,000 pounds. NOAA highly values public reports regarding
stranded (搁浅的) or injured sea animals. NOAA extremely appreciates such reports and encourages the public to
provide information on how to report these incidents. NOAA supposes that it is time for all to work together.
8. What does the underlined word “deemed” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Complained. B. Persuaded. C. Believed. D. Advocated.9. What could killer whales do to cause the possible death of the fin whale?
A. Drag it to the shore. B. Hit it unexpectedly.
C. Attack it in a group. D. Chase it until it beached itself.
10. What can we know about killer whales from paragraph 3?
A. Their presence is causing concern for locals.
B. They are a new threat to the local ecosystem.
C. They are hardly engaging in predatory behaviors.
D. They are being observed frequently near Torrey Pines.
11. What is NOAA’s attitude towards public reports?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Worried.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. D 11. A

deemed为“认为”之意。选项A“Complained (抱怨)”;选项B“Persuaded (劝服)”;选项C“Believed
(认为)”;选项D“Advocated (提倡)”。故选C。
【9题详解】

chased fin whales, causing them to beach themselves in attempts to escape.( Milstein指出,有记录显示,虎鲸曾
追逐长须鲸,导致长须鲸为逃避而搁浅)”可知,虎鲸可能一直追逐长须鲸直到它搁浅,从而可能导致其死
亡。故选D。
【10题详解】

Low levels of vitamin (维生素) D could lead to a slower recovery process in children with broken bones,
according to research to be presented at a conference this weekend.
“Children need to be given well-balanced diets that include vitamin D to maintain children’s overall health and
ensure efficient recovery when injuries occur,” said the study’s senior author, Dr. Jessica McQuerry of the
University of Florida.
McQuerry’s team examined data about 166 patients, from babies to 17-year-olds, who had broken a bone
between 2015 and 2022. They found that in 61.4 percent of cases, the children had low levels of vitamin D and
these children were likely to take significantly longer to recover.
Professor Scarlett McNally, the deputy director of London’s Center for Perioperative Care, said, “Vitamin D
helps in many body functions, including repair of bones and tissues. It is a vitamin that helps the body manage
calcium which keeps your bones strong and is needed for muscles to contract. Vitamin D also has a role in immune
(免疫) function, helping your body deal with infection and cancer. It also has a role in cell division—essential for
tissue repair.”
The study’s authors said that previous studies had focused on how vitamin D can help prevent fractures (骨折),
but this new research is making up for the fact that vitamin D for children’s fractures had been largely unexplored
up to this point. They recommended testing your child for vitamin D levels if a broken bone is taking a long time to
recover.
Vitamin D can be found in a variety of foods. Dairy products, such as milk and cheese, are particularly high in
the nutrient, but it is also found in fish, eggs and some vegetables.
Sunlight exposure can help the body absorb vitamin D. “Getting outside and enjoying the fresh air can do
wonders for your recovery while also upping vitamin D absorption,” McQuerry said.
12. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?A. The side effects of medicine. B. The good ways to keep fit.
C. The functions of vitamin D. D. The roles of bones and tissues.
13. How does the new research differ from previous studies?
A. It uncovers the secret of tasty foods. B. It offers deep insights into vitamin D.
C. It focuses on teenage exercise routine. D. It provides the cure for broken bones.
14. What do the study’s authors advise parents to do?
A. Eat vegetables as much as possible. B. Ask their family members to work out.
C. Check vitamin D levels of their kids. D. Refuse dairy products in the supermarket.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Well-balanced Diets Help Teenagers Grow up B. Exploring Nature Plays a Key Role in Life
C. Researchers Find a New Kind of Vitamin D. Vitamin D Is Vital for Children
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. C 15. D

【答案】Online Shopping
Online shopping is quite popular in our daily life now. It is a new way of shopping as opposed to traditional
shopping. One of the most obvious strengths of online shopping is its convenience. All kinds of things are offered
on various apps for us to choose from. Unlike the shops on the street which have opening hours, we can buy
anything we like at any time with a cell phone at hand.
However, there are many disadvantages about online shopping. We can’t actually see the real products. So we
may be cheated easily. Also, many people will miss the best opportunity to go out with their friends and share the
joy of shopping.
In my opinion, online shopping should never fully take the place of traditional shopping, and we should make
proper use of online shopping.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In my grandparents’ era, the question of whether to repair or replace an item was unrelated. Repair was usually
the only option. So, when faced with a broken hoe (锄头), I let my brain do a little time traveling and decided to
make the repair, just like Grandpa would have done.
I dug through my old toolbox for the needed parts, seeking for just the right tools in my odd collection. I would
value the strong cords of connection tying together present and past generations. Working with objects that have a
history is satisfying, and I love thinking about the hands that used them to keep homes, farms, or autos running
smoothly.
Finally, I chose my favorite hammer (锤子) from my dad, who received it from his dad. Grandpa’s hammer has a
worn, ash handle, the grain smooth from 70 years of use and spotted with colorful paint and small cuts from a lifetime
of projects. I love how he’d used a bent horseshoe nail to tighten the head to the handle.
With just the right bolt (螺栓) I just found in hand, I was ready to begin to repair. Along with his hammer, I
thought about how Grandpa always stressed the importance of having the right tools for a job. While I was immersed in
the repairs and my memories, my neighbor’s child, Paul, came running over asking for help. His bicycle chain had
come off again, and this was something I could lend a hand to do.
I set aside my work and took Paul to his bike. Fixing a chain wasn’t hard, but Paul clearly lacked the know-how.
As I taught him, I shared with him the lesson passed down from my grandfather: The right tool and the related
knowledge are essential for completing any job. Paul watched attentively and curiously.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
A few moments later, we managed to get the chain back on track.

_______________
【答案】A few moments later, we managed to get the chain back on track. Paul’s face lit up with pride and he said
loudly, “Thank you for helping me. Now I know how to fix it and I can fix it myself next time!” I replied, “My
pleasure.” As I waved him goodbye, I felt a sense of accomplishment that went beyond the simple act of repairing a
hoe or a bike chain. It was about passing on a valuable lesson and perhaps inspiring a younger generation to embrace
the same values of self-reliance.
Thinking of the hammer, I decided to start a small club to repair old items for kids in the community every Friday.
My club not only taught practical skills but also promoted environmental awareness. So every Friday afternoon, a
group of kids would gather in the community center to learn something about fixing and recycling, together with
their broken toys and various household items in need of repair. As the months went by, the club became a center of
innovation and learning, showing we could breathe new life into old things and build stronger bonds with each
other.
