In January 1998, 6-year-old Ryan sat in his first grade classroom. He was shocked to learn that many people in
developing African countries couldn’t get enough clean water. Not only did they not have a water fountain a few
steps from the classroom, like he did, but he learned millions of African children also got sick and some even died
because of polluted water. That day, Ryan decided to do something.
At first, he cleaned windows and did gardening for his family and neighbours. After four months, he saved up
$70 — a fortune to a 6-year-old. He thought it was enough to build a well in Africa. However, when he gave the
money to a charity, he was told that it actually cost $2,000 to build a well. Seventy dollars was only enough for a
hand pump. Ryan understood that a hand pump wouldn’t help the children. What they needed was a well dug near
their homes.
Two thousand dollars was a lot of money, but Ryan didn’t give up. He was determined to help other children
have clean water. He started to ask for help from his classmates and neighbours and persuaded them to donate
money. At the same time, a friend of Ryan’s mother helped make his story go public. After several months, Ryan
had raised the $2,000, with which a well was built near a primary school in Uganda.
Later, Ryan set up a foundation to encourage more people to help. Many inspired people gave him their
support. Ryan’s foundation continues to attract support from more and more people, so the work of building more
wells can go on. Today, over 800,000 people in 16 countries across Africa have benefited from the life-changing
gift of clean, safe water.
4. What motivated Ryan to take action to help people in Africa?
A. His family’s involvement in charity. B. A desire to build a well for his family.
C. Learning about the shortage of clean water. D. Being inspired by his classmates’ selfless act.
5. How did Ryan eventually raise the $2, 000 needed to build a well in Uganda?
A. By doing extra chores. B. By turning to his parents.
C. By switching to the media. D. By asking for donations.6. Which of the following best describes Ryan?
A. Humorous and helpful. B. Intelligent and interesting.
C. Gifted and understanding. D. Persistent and influential.
7. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. Water is the life-changing gift. B. A little kid can make a difference.
C. Donating money can change the world. D. Children should be taught about charity.

As a high school student in England, I thought I knew a lot about Hamlet. Having seen quite a few
productions of Hamlet and read the play many times, I was full of confidence — until the Peking Opera came to
town!
Peking Opera, a form of traditional Chinese theatre, has over two hundred years of history. Does this mean it’s
easier than a Shakespeare play to understand? To find out the answer, I just had to go and see The Revenge of
Prince Zidan — the Peking Opera version of Hamlet.
Starting with an orchestra playing traditional Chinese instruments, the opera brought a completely new sound
to my Western ears. At first, I thought what I heard was a violin, but later I learnt that it was an instrument with two
strings called jingbu. Then, seeing the main characters come on stage, I was surprised! The costumes and masks
were amazing. The performers of course sang in Chinese, but the music, exaggerated movements and mime helped
get the meanings across to the audience. And the stage was really simple: a decorated whip represented a horse, and
a screen with Chinese characters, a study. Using such techniques, the opera had transformed a small stage into the
whole universe. I had never seen Prince Hamlet do a backflip before! That was simply incredible. It was so
dazzling and energetic that I wasn’t sure if the characters were performers or athletes! Everyone was clapping.
Before experiencing The Revenge of Prince Zidan, I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy it. But, in fact, I was on the
edge of my seat! Feeling the strong emotions of love, anger, fear and grief in the performance, I could easily
recognise the theme of Hamlet. So, if you want to see a show that combines music, singing, drama, poetry and
costume design with explosive effect, The Revenge of Prince Zidan ticks all the right boxes!
8. Why did the author go to see the Peking Opera version of Hamlet?
A. To find out if it’s easier to understand. B. To experience an old Chinese art form.
C. To judge whether it is the best version. D. To know Chinese musical instruments.
9. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The skillful movements of the performers. B. The simple stage setting of the Peking Opera.
C. The author’s feelings during the performance. D. The audience’s understanding of Chinese culture.
10. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?A. I almost fell off my seat. B. I was extremely excited.
C. I couldn’t control my behaviour. D. I could feel the complex emotions.
.
11 Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. How I Appreciate Peking Opera B. When Hamlet Meets Peking Opera
C. Hamlet Reveals Spirit of Shakespeare’s plays D. The Revenge of Prince Zidan Influences Audience
D
Beethoven is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicians. He completed 722 musical works. Unfortunately, the
master died while still working on his 10th Symphon (交响曲) . Now, a team of musicians and scientists have used
artificial intelligence (AI) to complete the artist’s final composition.
Dr. Matthias first came up with the idea to complete the composition in 2019. He thought it was an appropriate
way to celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday in December 2020. He began by enlisting an international team of
music experts to help him with the giant task. They included music composer Walter and Dr. Ahmed, the creator of
an innovative AI technology for the art market.
Ahmed and his colleagues started the process by familiarizing the AI software initially with a broad range of
classical music, and then, narrowed it to just Beethoven’s works. Meanwhile, Walter and his group tried to interpret
the rough drafts and the handful of notes that detailed Beethoven’s plans for the 10thSymphony.
The team then began the slow and careful task of feeding the AI software musical notes from the unfinished
composition. To stay true to Beethoven’s original composition, Ahmed’s team sent Walter hundreds of AI-generated
musical note variations every evening. Walter would listen to them and then select the one that he thought was
closest to what the artist would have written. The AI team would add the music and rerun the software to generate
the next suggestions. And piece by piece, the team was able to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony!
The composition was firstly released on October 9, 2021. Not surprisingly, it caused some controversy (争议).
Critics believe technology should not be used to copy the human creative process. Ahmed and his team agree with
their opinions and say their AI software is not out to replace humans—it is just a tool to help artists to express
themselves in new ways.
12. How did Dr. Matthias intend to celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday?
A. By finishing his work. B. By forming an AI team.
.
C By working with other musicians. D. By interpreting his musical drafts.
13. What specific role did Walter play in the team?
A. He made the AI software familiar with classical music.
B. He made the list of international team of music experts.
C. He was responsible for developing and running the AI software.D. He chose AI-generated musical notes closest to Beethoven’s intentions.
14. Ahmed and his team view their AI software as _______.
A. a copy machine B. a helpful tool
C. a creative replacement D. a new invention
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A team treasured classical music. B. A piece of software caused debate.
C. AI assisted in completing a composition. D. Musicians recommended masterpieces.

Green Thumb
All I did was show my little sister how to grow plants. Dig a hole. Put in a seed. Cover it with dirt. Water it.
Wait. “See, Laynie,” I explained, “a whole plant will grow from this tiny seed. All we have to do is water it.”
Laynie had her own watering can so she could “help” me in the garden. One day, after everything was
watered, she ran to the fence and started sprinkling water on another spot. I walked over and saw a fresh patch of
dirt near the fence.
“Did you plant something there?” I asked.
“Yes,” she said. “I’m growing a pencil. My purple pencil got too small, so I planted it.”
“What? But, Laynie—”
I should have explained things right then, but I just muttered, “Uh…I never grew one before.”
Later I got what seemed like a great idea. I dug up Laynie’s pencil and “planted” a brand-new purple pencil.
Laynie was really excited when she saw it. “My pencil grew!” she shouted.
A few days later, Laynie was watering on the same spot. Two days later, new crayons sticking their pointy
little heads out, thanks to me. Laynie jumped up and down and yelled, “They look like flowers!” She “picked”
them and ran into the house.
Next, Laynie grew an adult bear doll from a tiny one, a soup spoon from a teaspoon, and a hand mirror from a
piece of glass. When she claimed that she had grown these things, I just kept my mouth shut! Actually, it was fun
trying to think of what should grow from Laynie’s seeds. And it was cool to see her get excited.
One day I saw her patting down some dirt near the fence again, so I knew she’d just planted something. My
heart dropped to my feet when she asked, “How long does it take to grow a goldfish, Brad?” I couldn’t speak.
“Not long, I bet!” said Laynie. She knelt down to whisper “Grow, Molly. Grow!” before she skipped back to
the house.注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I sat down with my back to the fence and thought for a long time.
