学科网(北京)股份有限公司I grew up in a poor family. This was something I did not realize until I was older. I thought everyone in the
city took the bus, because everyone in my neighborhood took the bus. I thought everyone in the city used the food
bank, because all my friends’ cupboards were filled with the same government-labeled food that filled my
cupboards. We all wore hand-me-down clothes.
Grocery shopping was my first experience understanding that my family was a little different. My mom used
paper money that looked different from the paper money others in line were using. I asked my mom why our
money looked different. She said that we used food stamps that were helped by the government so we could eat.
In high school, I was still embarrassed and wished we were not so poor, but I loved my mom and the other
members of my family and knew we had things to be proud of. My mother taught me how to love and told me to
believe in myself. Growing up in poverty taught me perseverance (毅力). I have always believed in myself and my
abilities. I knew I could focus on school and build a life that looked different from my childhood.
As I became a man, I started understanding how my experiences enabled me to be resilient (有韧性的), and
how to respect people for who they are as an individual—and not by what they have. I think there are a lot of fixed
images placed on those experiencing poverty that do not actually come from the people experiencing it. These
judgments come from people on the outside trying not to look into the experience. Hardworking , trustworthy,
reliable, clean, efficient, successful and disciplined are all words not typically associated with poverty. But those
words are very much shown by those experiencing poverty. I am proud to be who I am and proud of where I’m
from.
4. Why did the mom use different paper money in the shop?
A. To show our difference. B. To spend the extra stamps.
C. To support the government. D. To buy food without real money.
5. What can we learn about the mom from Paragraph 3?
A. She was wise. B. She was patient. C. She was single. D. She was educated.
6. What’s the author’s attitude towards to his experience?
A. Frightened. B. Annoyed. C. Grateful. D. Confused.
7. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Struggling With Being Poor B. Lessons From Growing Up Poor
C. Staying Poor Means Staying Foolish D. My Childhood Memories

As night falls in the rainforest, orangutans (猩猩) climb high into the treetops to build tree nests (巢). These
carefully constructed beds provide warmth, comfort, and protection against natural enemies and mosquitoes.
Scientists have long been curious about how young orangutans learn such a complex skill. Recent research shows
that they learn it through observation and practice — a process known as observational social learning.
Nest-building is essential for orangutan survival. It is neither purely inborn nor quickly mastered. Constructing
a nest requires physical strength, clever hands, and decision-making regarding materials and structure. Night nests
are especially well-designed, often featuring linings, pillows, and even roofs. This makes nest-building a
challenging task.
Young orangutans begin to show interest in nest-building at around six months old. They start practicing
simple day nests at about one year of age, but night nest construction begins around age three and is not fully
mastered until they are about eight years old. More advanced skills, such as building across multiple trees or adding
comfort features, develop even later.
A key finding is that young orangutans learn primarily by closely watching their mothers build nests. Those
who paid close attention were more likely to attempt practice soon afterward. Simply being near the mother without
active observation did not have the same effect. This highlights the role of focused attention in social learning.
Additionally, young orangutans pay special attention to complex aspects of construction, such as multi-tree
supports and comfort elements. After observing these challenging steps, they practice them more frequently. As
they grow older, they also observe other members of the group, broadening their learning sources.
Material selection is also socially learned. Young orangutans tend to use the same tree species as their mothers.
As they grow older, they experiment with other materials, but adults often return to the tree species their mothers
used.
This study highlights that nest-building traditions are culturally passed down across generations. The loss of
orangutan populations or their habitats could therefore mean the disappearance of unique cultural knowledge. This
research not only shows the intelligence and cultural richness of orangutans, but also emphasizes the importance of
their conservation.
8. Which word can best describe the process of young orangutans learning nest-building?
A. Gradual. B. Painful. C. Inefficient. D. Independent.
9. How do young orangutans mainly learn to build nests?
A. By trial and error. B. By observing their mothers.
C. Through natural behavior. D. From other young orangutans.

A. Habits of orangutans. B. The necessity of learning.

A quiet revolution (变革) is unfolding around us. Artificial intelligence (AI), once a science fantasy, is now
reshaping our daily lives. From voice assistants and movie recommendations to medical diagnosis and self-driving
vehicles, AI is everywhere. It represents a new age of thinking machines that learn, adapt, and make decisions.
The heart of modern AI is machine learning, which allows computers to learn from data rather than follow fixed
instructions. Using neural networks inspired by the human brain, AI systems recognize patterns and improve over
time. This technology enables impressive achievements such as language translation, image recognition, and even
creative tasks like composing music or generating art.
AI integrates smoothly into everyday life. It powers Internet search engines, social media recommendations,
GPS services, and smart home devices. In healthcare, it assists in analyzing medical images, predicting diseases, and
developing personalized treatments. AI also helps find cheating in finance, upgrade delivery, and improve agricultural
productivity through smart farming techniques.
However, its growing influence brings both opportunities and challenges. In the workplace, AI performs repetitive
tasks on its own but also creates new roles in technology and data analytics. It raises important concerns such as data
privacy and the risk of misuse in monitoring systems. Ensuring that AI is fair, accountable and matches human values
remains a critical task for researchers and policymakers.
Looking ahead, AI holds great promise for solving complex problems in science, climate research, and education.
It could speed up medical discoveries, help address environmental issues, and provide personalized learning
experiences for students. However, its development must be guided by responsibility and global cooperation to ensure
all of humanity can benefit.
In conclusion, AI is not just a technological advancement — it is reshaping how we live, work, and understand
the world. With careful management, it can become a valuable partner that boosts human capability and helps build
a fairer and promising future for everyone.

Camping Tips &Tricks for a Fun Trip
Many people idealize camping trips as being this easy, effortless encounter with destinations rich with natural
landscapes and nights under the stars twinkling in the sky above. ____16____ That’s why we’ve prepared the best
camping tips for you!
Plan accordingly, and then plan again. When you’re out in the middle of nowhere, you have to be equipped
to nature’s challenges. ____17____ Therefore, a plan for unexpected weather changes is essential to a successful
camping trip. For example, consider packing extra suppliers like blankets. While that might seem like a huge
inconvenience, the biggest and real issue occurs when you need something you don’t have.
Know what you need. ____18____ Not all beginner campers will need the top-of-the-line, latest supplies.
But you should have at least the basics! That includes a decent tent with enough room for people camping with you,
a good sleeping bag appropriate for the season, and other supplies like food and water. You’d better create a
convenient checklist that lays out everything that you should consider.
____19____ When you’re far away from the major conveniences we rely upon like an urgent care center,
police stations, and emergency rooms, you should always remember that safety is your first priority! ____20____
A first aid kit is a great starting point, but it’s certainly not the end of maximizing your safety efforts. Depending on
where you plan to camp, you’ll want to grab these items that cover you in most emergency situations: a pocket
knife, a fire starter, and a safety whistle.
Ready to go camping? Now you know what to expect and how to prepare for your next camping trip, so you
actually have fun—rain or shine!
A. Always choose a safe campsite.
B. Never leave home without safety in mind.
第11页/共22页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司C. We encourage you to create a safety supply kit.
D. Camping doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.

42-year-old Christine Dawn King has worked at a pet hospital for 10 years. She is a pet doctor and loves working
with pets. As she is warm-hearted and professional, pet owners living in the neighbourhood also love to ask her to
treat their pets.
,
One Thursday morning Christine was hurrying to her job. The traffic on the road was thick — no surprise for
this stretch of highway. She pulled into the exit lane(车道), where cars were moving at a slow speed.
That was when Christine noticed a woman standing near cars with a dog beside her. Christine saw the cause of
the traffic jam: The small dog had somehow gotten out of the car and was now stuck in the metal fences(栅栏)in the
middle of the highway. The little dog was obviously frightened in the small space, unable to break free. Despite his
owner’s best efforts, he was still struggling.
The woman caught the dog’s collar(项圈)but couldn’t move him. Her hands were shaking, and her face was
covered with sweat. She was obviously very panicked, not knowing what to do. Some drivers impatiently honked
their horns(摁喇叭). Others were too focused on their own schedules to offer assistance. Christine could see the
anxiety on the woman’s face as she looked around.
Without hesitation, Christine opened the car door. She quickly walked towards the dog. “Let me see if I can
help,” Christine said to the woman. The woman was a little hesitant but still walked aside to allow the stranger to
have a try. Christine carefully checked on the situation. She found that the dog was scared, but not injured. She spoke
gently to the dog, trying to calm him down. Next, she took out a tool carried with her car and tried her best to widen
the gap between the fences. The dog seemed to realize that Christine was here to help him, not struggling anymore.
In no time, the gap between the fences became larger. There was enough space to move the dog. Christine gently
lifted him out, taking great care not to hurt him.

【答案】One possible version:
The woman stepped forward and carefully held her dog. She thanked Christine heartily for what she had done,
with tears rolling down her cheeks. She said that without Christine’s generous help, everything would have been
much worse. Christine introduced herself, and gave the woman her business card, saying she could take the dog to
her pet hospital for a checkup if she still felt worried. The woman took the card and walked to her car. After the
woman’s car moved away, the traffic quickly returned to normal.
Christine arrived at her office, expecting to see the woman again. In the afternoon, she saw the woman walking
into the hospital with the dog and a bouquet of flowers as her gift. The woman told Christine that the dog was
important to her, hoping everything would be OK with her dog. After a thorough examination of the dog, Christine
told the woman the dog was fine. Hearing Christine’s words, the woman felt grateful and totally relieved.
