The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
The art contest is open to students who are at least 13 years old from September to December. No fee is

Teachers in poor areas are always being asked to do more with less. They're given smaller budgets and larger
tasks in schools that employ fewer teachers and take in more students. But none of these struggles can quite
compare to the challenges faced by a computing teacher Akoto in Ghana who teaches his students how to use
computers.
Akoto recently posted photos of his classroom, and they've gotten quite a response. Akoto is an information
and communication technology (ICT) teacher who has been assigned to teach his students without using an actual
computer. So like any good teacher, Akoto teaches them by drawing pictures of a computer on the blackboard.
Akoto recently shared images of one of his computer lessons, in which he can be seen using multi-colored
chalk to draw the features of Microsoft Word software on the blackboard. In one of the photos, you can see his
students drawing the same images in their notebooks.
One might ask, "Why do they bother to take such a challenging course?" But here's the reason: Even though
the students at Akoto's school don't have computers, they are still required to pass a national exam that includes a
section on computing skills before they move or to high school.
So Akoto does what he needs to do to ensure that his students understand the material He has drawn pictures
many times for his students over his six years and just happened to share the pictures this time on Facebook. He
says he has his own personal laptop, but it is different from the one Akoto is required to teach. He doesn't bring it to
class for fear of confusing the kids with a computer that they have never seen.
The good news is that those Facebook pictures made their way to the right place. Microsoft Africa promised to
give him some proper resources. Others also stepped up to the plate and helped out Akoto. NIIT Ghana, an
information technology training institution, donated five computers to Akoto's school and one for Akoto himself. A
PhD student at the University of Leeds in the U. K. inspired by Akoto also donated a computer.

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure is absolutely the case in Turkey where garbage collectors started
collecting books that have been thrown away and ended up opening a library.
It started when garbage man Durson Ipek found a bag of abandoned books when he was working and then it
snowballed from there. Ipek and other garbage men started gathering the books they found on the streets that were
ready for landfills (垃圾填埋地) and as their collection started to grow, so did word of mouth. Soon, local residents
started donating books directly. The library was initially available only to the garbage employees and their families
to use but as the collection grew, so did public interest and the library was opened to the public in 2017.
“On the one hand, there were those who were leaving these books on the streets. On the other hand, others
were looking for these books,” Ankaya mayor Alper Tasdelen told CNN. “We started to discuss the idea of creating
a library from these books. When everyone supported it, this project happened.”
All the books that are found are sorted and checked for condition. If they pass, they go on the shelves. Today,
the library has over 6,000 books that range from fiction to nonfiction and there’s a very popular children’s section
that even has a collection of comic books. An entire section is devoted to scientific research and there are also
books available in English and French. The collection has grown so large that the library loans books to schools and
educational programs.
“Village school teachers from all over Turkey are requesting books,” Tasdelen told CNN. The government has
to hire a full-time employee to manage the library.
This library is incredibly popular. It is frequently filled with the children of the city’s workers and students
from nearby schools. There is a waiting room set up for readers and chess boards for the people who visit the
library. You can even enjoy a cup of tea in the waiting room.

As an intense heat wave sweeps through China, residents are seeking relief in air raid shelters and swimming
pools to stay cool, and dozens of cities, including Shanghai, Chongqing and Hangzhou, have issued their highest-
level red alert warnings. Shanghai has issued three red alerts this year, with the temperature hitting 40.9 Celsius on
July 13, matching the record set in 2017 since 1873. The fact that Shanghai has experienced only 16 days of 40°C-
plus temperatures since the city began keeping records in 1873 should give us an idea about the seriousness of the
situation.
Medical experts say extreme heat could cause nausea (恶心), fatigue, sunstroke and even death, with senior
citizens and people with long-term illnesses particularly vulnerable to heat waves.
Extreme heat events, which began a month ago, have affected the lives of more than 900 million people in
China. Between June 1 and July 12, the average number of days with temperatures above 35°Cwas 5.3, up 2.4 days
over normal years, breaking the national record set in 1961, according to the National Climate Center.
Parts of Europe are also in the grip of heat waves and experiencing extreme weather events after the western
part of North America faced extreme heat waves last year. In response to the exceptionally high temperatures, the
United Kingdom has declared a national emergency and issued the highest-level red alert warning for Monday and
Tuesday for the first time. More alarmingly, the average global temperature in June this year was 0.4°C higher than
normal years and the highest since 1979, with temperatures in countries such as Spain, France and Italy exceeding
40°C．
Unfortunately, extreme heat, which is directly related to climate change, will become more frequent andintense in the next 30 years, setting new records for high temperatures. As global warming intensifies, losses and

I’m worried that you have been addicted sharing pictures in WeChat circle recently. You even share all sorts of
photo in your daily life. Of course, WeChat makes it the better to understand each other and makes our life more
