Ken Campbell had last attempted running at high school. When his wife, Susan, injured her foot, she needed
support to rejoin her running group, so Campbell went along to keep her company and share in the recovery. “We
were just walking at the beginning,” he says. “And I was heavy. I weighed over 90kg.” But as the weeks and
months passed, the weight fell away, Susan recovered — and Campbell’s abilities grew. At the age of 63, he ran
50km, and at 70, he ran through the night to complete a 100km ultramarathon.
So how does someone with no sporting precedent (先例) become an ultradistance runner in his 60s and 70s?
Susan had run marathons before her injury. But for Campbell, the turning point came when Susan’s Fleet Feet
running group took to the trails in the Sierra Nevada foothills near their home in Citrus Heights, California.Campbell went out to visit Susan’s group, and “the trails were a terrible mess. It had been raining. And I was
running in my road shoes. Slipping and sliding and falling. And I was struggling. I thought, well, I like this a lot but
I could do better.”
What he liked above all was the feeling of “being enveloped by the trail, being embraced by the closeness of
the vegetation and the nearness of the river. I was walking where Native people had walked for thousands of years
and where miners had walked on their way to gold.”
Running the 100km ultramarathon took Campbell 16 hours. When Campbell crossed the finish line at 3am,
Susan handed him a 100km sticker to display on the back of his truck. He already had a 50km one on there. “It is a
public proclamation (声明) that you are part of this community,” he says. “Wherever we park, I see a line of
vehicles with their various stickers and I feel that we area tribe (部落).”
Campbell suffered arthritis before he started running, and is “a candidate for knee replacement”. But for now,
he is holding off on surgery. It could put an end to the running — but the “sense of wellbeing and accomplishment
will carry me on forever”, he says. “If I can’t run, I will walk.”

Imagine a future where science has created your twin. Not a flesh-and-blood twin, but one that recreates your
flesh and blood, your bones, your heart, your brain — your whole body, in fact — as an extremely complicated
computer model.
Your doctors can use this digital twin to work out how you will respond to a particular drug or medicalprocedure. They can even look further into the future, creating a “healthcast”, to forecast what diseases might
happen to you or how your lifestyle will affect your health as you age. It is the ultimate in personalized medicine.
This is the bold vision set out in Virtual You: How building your digital twin will revolutionize medicine and
change your life by Peter Coveney, director of the Centre for Computational Science, and Roger Highfield, science
director of the Science Museum Group, UK.
Digital twins are already in widespread use in industries such as civil engineering. But these model systems
are much simpler than the complex human body. Imagine all the parts that come together to make you work: from
the 3 billion letters of your genome (基因组), the numerous molecules (分子) that make up your cells, the trillions
of cells building your tissues and organs, and the environment having its input too. Now, imagine trying to create a
model of this that is made to each unique individual and that predicts the changes that will take place over a
lifetime. This is easier said than done. Changes in the systems biologists want to describe are usually different from
what mathematicians describe as “non-linear” (非线性的). Another complication is “emergence”: where the whole
of a system is greater than the sum of its parts. This complexity challenges mathematics and pushes computing to
the limit too.
But getting to the next level — a whole human individual — is going to require yet more data and a revolution

Every 40 days a language dies. This “catastrophic” loss is being intensified by the climate crisis, according to
linguists. If nothing is done, conservative estimates suggest half of all the 7000 languages currently spoken will be
extinct by the end of the century.
Speakers of minority languages have experienced a long history of persecution (迫 害), with the result that by
the 1920s half of all indigenous (土著的) languages in Australia, the US, South Africa and Argentina were extinct.
The climate crisis is now considered the “final nail in the coffin” for many indigenous languages and the
knowledge they represent.
“Languages are already endangered,” says Anastasia Richl, director of the Strathy language unit at Queen’s
University in Kingston, Ontario. Huge factors are globalization and migration, as communities move to regions
where their language is not spoken or valued, according to Richl. “It seems particularly cruel, ” she says, “ that
most of the world’s languages are in parts of the world that are growing unpleasant to people. ” Vanuatu, a South
Pacific island nation measuring 12, 189 km2, has 110 languages, the highest density (密度) of languages on the
planet. It is also one of the countries most at risk of sea level rise. “Many small language communities are on
islands and coastlines easily subject to hurricanes and sea level rise,” she says. Others live on lands where rising
temperature threatens traditional farming and fishing practices, leading to migration.
In response to the crisis, the UN launched the International Decade of Indigenous Languages in 2022.
Promoting and conserving languages of indigenous communities is “ not only important for them, but for all
humanity, ” said Csaba Korosi, the UN general assembly president, urging countries to allow access to education in
indigenous languages.

I was driving home from school one hot summer day when I realized that my car was not working right. I kept

how to do. As I was doing this, an older man in a truck pulled behind me and asked if I needed help. Of course, I

the car and he would take a look to see what was wrong.
After some investigating, he informed me that it was my transmission(变速器) and he could jump my car
enough to make it to the service station which was just a mile up the road. After charging my car, he led me to the
station and went in to tell the mechanic what was wrong. He came back out seconds later to tell me the mechanic
was out on a break and probably wouldn’t be back. However, there was a shop with auto parts and he would see if
they had the right part. He went ahead and purchased the transmission for me and said he could again jump my car
enough to drive it up the road to his place where he had a shop where he worked on tractors.
I again followed him up the highway to his shop and he began working on my car while I sat in the driver’s
seat. After working for about an hour, trying to get the old transmission out and the new one in, he realized that he
had gotten the wrong transmission and would go back into town and get the right one. While doing that, he sent meinto the house where his wife had a little hair salon.
