French writer Annie Ernaux won the 2022 Nobel Prize in literature in 2022. She is the first French female
writer to win the prize. In the words of the Nobel committee , Emaux was given the award“for the courage and
clinical acuity (敏锐的洞察力)”of her writing.
Having spent over 5 decades as a writer, the 82-year-old winner has published more than 20 books to her name
, including Cleaned Out (1974), Shame (1997), a 2008 memoir (回忆录) called The Years and A Girl’s Story
(2016).
Rather than consider herself a writer of fiction, Emaux has used the term“an ethnologist (人类学家) of
herself”“ to describe herself.
Bormn in 1940 in a rural village in Normandy, France, Ernaux grew up in a working-class environment as her
parents ran a combined grocery store and cafe. She worked as a teacher before becoming a full-time writer.
Two books by other French writers inspired her to be a writer: The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir and
Distinction by Pierre Bourdieu. The former led her to write about feminism (女权主义),and the latter raised her
awareness of the huge gap between her and the environment she grew up in. Besides her reading influences,her“upbringing and experiences navigating adolescence and adulthood”also inspire many of her works,noted CNN.
For example, the book Shame explores the theme of childhood trauma (创伤) while A Girl’s Story follows a young
woman’s coming of age in the 1950s.
Though the matters Ernaux describes in her books are serious and even sometimes heavy, they are always
written in plain language. Emaux described her style as flat writing” through which she aims to tell her stories
objectively,“unshaped by florid (过多修饰的) description or overwhelming emotions ,”noted Fox News.
“She writes about things that no one else writes about, for instance her jealousy(嫉妒), her experiences as an
abandoned lover and so on.I mean, really hard experiences,” Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel Committee for
Literature, said after the award announcement in Stockholm. He went on to say,“ She gives words for these
experiences that are very simple and striking. They are short books, but they are really moving.”

CComposer George Lam has always liked writing music inspired by places.
“There are all these places in Chinatown that are both hidden and meaningful” he says stepping out of the way
of passers-by while leading a tour of the neighborhood. “To uncover some of those hidden things in a city walk that
you might not ordinarily notice—l wondered. is there a piece in that?”
It turns out that there’s not just a piece but a whole app Lam interviewed five Chinese Americans from around
the country; asking them about their experiences in Chinatown: plus questions about their ancestors. their families
and their memories. He then set the answers to music the instruments drawing attention to each person’s distinct
pattern of speech.
Lam created the app Family Association. He calls the piece—the free app—Family Association, after the
important folk groups that line the streets of the neighborhood Chinese family associations have been a bridge
between new immigrants and more established ones since the late 1800s. In Chinatowns across the country they’re
a place to find resources or an apartment, talk business or polities, maybe get a COVID shot. But they’re also a
place to socialize with people who share similar experiences.
Five of the neighborhood’s associations are anchors (锚点) for the app. Visitors use the build-in map to see
locations of the associations. As they walk closer to one of the family association buildings, the focus is on one of
the five oral history participants, telling their stories. These stories aren’t about the family associations instead
they’re about the Chinese-American experience and how they’ve felt supported by Chinatown.
But Lam thinks of the app itself as a kind of virtual family association. connecting these Chinese-American
voices with each other, even if they’ve never met. And he hopes to connect with visitors too—at the end of the
soundwalk, users are given a chance to record their own memories.

The first thing Megan Warfield did was get out of her damaged car. Returning home from an event in honor of
her late father, Warfield’s car was involved in a pile-up collision in Baltimore, MD, where she is a volunteer
firefighter. Noticing that one of the other cars had overturned, Warfield rushed to help calm the woman trapped
inside.
“I started to climb in there with her, but then I was like, ‘What are you doing? You’re ninemonths pregnant,’”
she said. “I ended up holding onto her to keep her in place because I wasn’t sure of her injuries at the time.”
Megan Warfield was “just a week or so shy of her due date” when the crash occurred. And the crash
apparently sent her into labor.
Ignoring increasingly painful contractions (收缩), Warfield kept the trapped woman calm and ensured that she
stayed in place so as not to risk worsening any injuries. When the emergency responders arrived, among them was
Volunteer Paramedic Josh Daugherty, Warfield’s friend. Daugherty gave aid not only to the injured woman but sent
Warfield by ambulance to hospital, where, several hours later, she gave birth to her third child.
According to the US Fire Administration, of the active firefighting personnel, more than half, 53 percent, are
volunteer firefighters. A volunteer firefighter is an unpaid professional who saves people from fires and other
emergency situations. They’re in charge of responding to emergency calls, putting out and preventing the spread of
fires, and administering first aid to people with injuries. They may help keep people safe during and after house and
building fires, car accidents, forest fires, and dangerous material incidents. All volunteer firefighters must pass strict
training to become qualified.
While she was pregnant, Warfield worked at the desk in her volunteer fire department. Now that she’s givenbirth, she is already planning her return to the field.
