C.Their uncles and aunts.
19.How many generations does the Wilsons’ party include?

20.What is the speaker mainly talking about?
A.A couple who spend Thanksgiving with non-family-members.
B.A couple who spend Thanksgiving with their family.
C.A couple who travel around to celebrate Thanksgiving.
【答案】18.B 19.C 20.A
W: Thanksgiving is one of America’s most popular holidays. It is a day for expressing thanks for all the
good things in life. It is also a day for family reunions. On that day many people travel long distances to gettogether with their families.
But not everyone can spend Thanksgiving with his or her family. Today we’ll introduce a couple, Joan and Sandy
Wilson, who could not afford to take time out to visit their parents, their uncles and aunts one year. They regretted
not being able to celebrate Thanksgiving with all their family members. But soon they met other people who also
were separated from their families. So the Wilsons began holding a yearly Thanksgiving dinner for what they called
their “extended family”. This included people in their community.
The group has grown over the years. To accommodate all the guests, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson now have to add small
tables to their large one in the big dining room. At first, many of their friends brought their babies and young
children. Now some of the first guests are grandparents. They often bring their grandchildren.
Like many other Americans, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson and their visitors enjoy a long day of cooking, eating and talking.
The traditional meal usually includes a turkey. Other traditional Thanksgiving foods served with turkey are sweet
potatoes, and pumpkin pies.

There are many apps that use mobile phone cameras and
other devices that might surprise you.
Seek by iNaturalist
To use it, simply take a picture or point your camera at a plant, insect, or animal, and you’ll get important
information about it. It includes the target’s scientific name, common name, seasonal nature, and a description of its
appearance, among other information.
From Seed to Spoon
You can add fruits and vegetables you’d like to grow on a virtual “Grow Box” from a list of images. It will

sunlight, water, and fertilizer.
PictureThis
Picture This will identify your plant and provide information about it from a picture on your phone’s camera.
It will show health information, its scientific name, where it can be found, common uses, harvesting time, and howto produce new plants from your existing plant. It also will show sunlight, soil, water, and fertilizer requirements.
You can pay $29.99 a year for the paid version, which provides treatment information for sick plants. The free
version will, however, identify a disease from a picture of a sick plant.
Apple Visual Look Up
Apple Visual Look Up is an AI feature for iPhone and iPad. It will identify plants, flowers, insects, birds, and
other animals shown in any photo. Using an Apple product running iOS16 or iPadOS16, you can use the feature by

It started with a parenting course I-took when my three sons
were in elementary school. The class consisted of eight two-hour sessions and included reading and homework
assignments. The basic message weaving its way through all eight sessions was “Pick Your Battles”. Another piece
of advice that went along with that was “Remain Flexible”.
What started out as parenting advice went much further than that and has guided me to this day after taking the
class when the situation presented itself. If there were two differing opinions’, I would stop and think. I had to
decide if theoutcome was worth a battle or was even worth the time it took to discuss it. If my son wanted to wear
the same superhero shirt to school three days in the row, did it really matter? No, I would have been more
comfortable if he had worn a clear shirt each day, but he was happy. If his friends gave him a hard time about his
shirt, he would have to deal with it. It wasn’t my issue after all.
The class also told us that flexibility especially when it involved kids, was key. Was it more important to
follow a planned schedule or was it better to remain flexible enough to make changes to that schedule even at the
last minute? Well, of course you need to be flexible and make changes. We were with a group a few years ago,
driving through the mountains to a small town where we were planning to have a picnic lunch. On the way there we
saw that a beautiful new winery (葡萄酒厂) had opened. It was not on our schedule. If we stopped, it would delay
our picnic in the park, but we did stop. We had an amazing experience. Had we not been flexible, we would have
missed out on that fantastic opportunity.
24.What will the author do when a dispute arises after the parenting course?
A.Take action to settle it immediately.
B.Judge if it is worth spending time on.
C.Stop the disagreement and compromise.
D.Stick to his view whatever the situation is.
25.How did the author deal with his son’s “shirt” problem?
A.Ask him to keep tidy at once.
B.Discuss the problem with his friends.
C.Keep silent and let him realize it by himself.
D.Talk with him frankly about his problem.26.What can we learn from the experience of having the picnic?
A.Visiting a winery can’t be a wrong choice.
B.Making changes can turn out satisfying.
C.Following a planned schedule is a priority.
D.Choosing a suitable place is essential.
27.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To recommend the parenting course to other friends.
B.To show that the parenting course is helpful to him.
C.To share with readers his experience in the winery.
D.To introduce the structure of the parenting course.

Amazingly for the British, who love queues, there is no
formal line-up. The bar staff are skilled at knowing whose turn it is. You are permitted to try to attract attention, but
there are rules about how to do this. Do not call out, tap coins on the counter, or wave like a drowning swimmer. Do
not sigh or roll your eyes. And whatever you do, do not ring the bell hanging behind the counter. This is used by the
landlord to signal closing time. The key thing is to catch the bar workers’ eyes. You could also hold an empty glass
or some money, but do not wave them about. Do adopt an expectant, hopeful, even slightly anxious facial
expression. If you look too complacent, the bar staff may assume you are already being served.
Always say “please” and try to avoid some of the British bar staff’s annoyance. They do not like people to
keep others waiting while they make up their minds. They don’t like people standing against the bar when there are
a lot of customers wanting for service. And they do not like people who wait until the end of the order and ask for
such drinks as Guinness Stout which take considerably longer to pour than other drinks.
One Dutch tourist who spent six months visiting 800 of Britain’s 61,000 bars and interviewing 50 bar workers
and more than 1,000 customers said, “I can not understand how the British ever manage to buy themselves a drink.”
But they do, and if you follow these tips you should be able to do so, too.
Speaking of tips, you should never offer the bar staff cash. The correct behavior is to offer them a drink. Bars
pride themselves on their equal atmosphere. A tip in cash would be a reminder of their service role. However, the
offer of a drink is a friendly gesture.28.What does the underlined word “complacent” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Contented. B.Worried. C.Polite. D.Annoyed.
29.How should customers attract the bar staff’s attention?
A.To tap coins on the counter. B.To hold an empty glass or some money.
C.To wave like drowning swimmers. D.To ring the bell hanging behind the counter.
30.What does the writer suggest people do in bars?
A.Correct bar staff’s misbehaviors. B.Tip bar staff in cash.
C.Offer people present a drink. D.Help to maintain the equal atmosphere.
31.Which column might the passage be taken from?
A.Health. B.Culture. C.Economy. D.Politics.
【答案】28.A 29.B 30.D 31.
Do adopt an expectant, hopeful, even slightly
anxious facial expression.(一定要表现出期待、希望,甚至有点焦虑的表情。)”
If you look too
complacent, the bar staff may assume you are already being served.(如果你看起来太complacent,酒保可能会认
中的划线词complacent 与“expectant, hopeful, even slightly anxious”表达
故选A。
You are permitted to try to attract attention, but there are rules about how to
do this. Do not call out, tap coins on the counter, or wave like a drowning swimmer. Do not sigh or roll your eyes.
And whatever you do, do not ring the bell hanging behind the counter. This is used by the landlord to signal closing

Speaking of tips, you should never offer the bar staff cash. The correctbehavior is to offer them a drink. Bars pride themselves on their equal atmosphere. A tip in cash would be a
reminder of their service role. However, the offer of a drink is a friendly gesture.(说到小费,你不应该给酒保现
Amazingly for the British, who love queues, there is no formal line-up. The

Choose What To Remember, What To Forget
You can take more control of your recall — as our memory expert Jonathan Hancock explains.
I was sorting through some boxes in the loft last week when I came across my childhood. The moment that I
saw my faded old friend, powerful memories flooded back from nearly 50 years before. 36 .
Not all objects trigger such welcome memories. However. I once had to throw a pair of running shorts.
Because they reminded me too much of the day I tripped and ended up in A&E with a broken wrist! 37
. According to a recent study, it’s possible to use thinking tricks to remove negative associations. And, in the
process, you can learn a lot about how memory works — including how to get yours under control.
Volunteers were first shown how to create connections between an item and a set of negative emotions. 38
. They linked a child’s trainer to images of a playground accident, for example, so that the object became
uncomfortable to have nearby. Later, they were shown how to actively forget those feelings by consciously pushing
away any pictures that appeared. And this turned out to be more than just a temporary distraction. It gradually
weakened the bad memories — in some cases, erasing them altogether.
It shows that recall relies on associations and images. And you can strengthen both of these factors when you
want to remember: For example.
• 39 .You’ll make the object an even more powerful “entrance” to happy times.
• To remember an intention or ambition, choose an object that symbolises it for you in some way, then
visualise your future plans whenever you see the object. Again, strengthening the images will continually sharpen
the memories. On the other hand, when you want to forget an item’s bad associations:
• Practise pushing away any images it triggers. This should get easier over time.
• Try it with places, too — even people. 40 . Make the images — and the unwanted feelings —
fade.
A.They did this using vivid mental imagery
B.Some memories can ruin people’s prospects
C.Pick up a favourate souvenir and enjoy the pictures it brings to mind
D.In an instant I was reconnected with how I felt — at an extremely happy time of my lifeE.But maybe I was too hasty
F.They also help us avoid the mistakes of the past
G.Be aware of any negative pictures they arouse, and actively reject them

One possible version:
Dear Rebecca,
Knowing that you are heading back to Britain very soon, I hate to say that parting is truly hard. But I am
delighted that you have enjoyed yourself here and grown attached to Chinese culture.
As a small token of appreciation, I picked a Chinese painting for you, on which is a pair of chopsticks.
Spanning thousands of years, chopsticks are a kind of tableware with distinct national features, being an important
component that fully reflects the intelligence of Chinese people. They always come in a pair and look identical. As
an ancient Chinese saying goes, good things come in pairs. Chopsticks embody the beauty of symmetry and
harmony of relationships.
Hope you will like the little gift. Wish you a pleasant journey home. Keep in touch.
Yours,
Li Hua

I really like my job—teaching, in which I can watch children grow up and understand slowly, especially when
I can play a part in it. However, it can be a challenging job. There are times when students can seem uninterested in
learning and troublesome in class. Tyler is just one of them.
Tyler was enrolled in my senior American government class for a term. He had impulse-control and anger-
management issues. He had been suspended (停课) many times before. When he entered my class in his senior
year, I expected the worst.
Every time I talked at the front of the class. I would ask questions of students, calling them by name. Doing
this helped me to get to know them and learn their names. Unfortunately, every time I called on Tyler, he would
respond with a glib (未经思考的) answer. If he got an answer wrong, he would become angry.
About a month into the year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I could usually get students to join in class
discussions or at least encourage them to sit quietly; by contrast, Tyler was just loud.
One day, Tyler was talking while I was teaching. In the middle of the lesson, I said, “Tyler, why don’t you join
in our discussion instead of having one of your own?” With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and yelled
something, some dirty word even included.
Due to his terrible performance in my class, he was sent to the office with a discipline referral
and he received a week-long out-of-school suspension.
To this point this was one of my worst teaching experiences. I feared that class every day. Tyler’s anger was
almost too much for me, like a bomb, ready to explode anytime. The week Tyler was out of school was a wonderful
time, and we got a lot achieved as a class.
On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door waiting for him, ready to have a talk with him.

On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door waiting for him, ready to have a talk with
him. On seeing him, I stopped him to have a talk. Unwillingly, he leaned against the wall, listening to me. I
persuaded myself to calm down and told him that I wanted to start over with him and that if he felt like he would
lose control in class he had my permission to step outside to cool down. He stared at me with doubt. Patting him on
the shoulder, I cast him a convincing smile. Finally, he agreed with some hesitation.
As part of my efforts to build connections with him, I managed to meet him regularly after class to learn about
his study problems and his advice on how to manage class better. I even appointed Tyler monitor of our class,
asking him to take charge of several projects. Happily, with the trust and care given to him, Tyler felt more
responsible for his own learning and behavior. His privilege was used less and less often. At the end of the year,
Tyler wrote me a thank-you note about how my special permission made a great difference to him. I still keep that
note today, reminding myself that if I am more friendly and caring to my students, something amazing will occur to
them.
