This past January, Captain Preet Chandi set foot on a historic, though decidedly icy, trail by becoming the first
African woman to reach the South Pole alone, without assistance. While others might have been content to make
history with this singular accomplishment, “Polar Preet” Chandi is not one to rest on her laurels (桂冠). The
journey to the South Pole was merely “phase one” of a larger and even more extraordinary goal for the adventurous
British Army officer.
For “phase two”, the 33-year-old has set her sights on crossing Antarctica — once again doing the journey
alone and unsupported to become the first woman to achieve this goal.
On November 14, Chandi departed from Hercules Inlet, an ice-filled bay at the southwestern section of the
Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf bordering the Weddell Sea in Antarctica. Her goal is to reach Reedy Glacier within 75
days, a coast-to-coast journey consisting of roughly 1,100 miles. And “roughly” is the operative (关键的) word
here — she’ll be pulling a sled with equipment, weighing about 264 pounds altogether, and she’ll be doing so intemperatures that can sink to minus 58 degrees Fahrenheit, with wind speeds of up to 60 miles per hour.
Her journey thus far required years of training. Prior to her 700-mile South Pole journey, she prepared by
attending a polar survival course in Norway. She continued her training back home in the U.K. by dragging tires,
the closest thing to pulling a sled, and a month-long practice run in Greenland. Ultimately, Chandi went on to finish
her first South Pole expedition in 40 days, a full eight days ahead of schedule.
When not otherwise setting records of human endurance in extreme conditions, Chandi tries to inspire others
in her day-to-day work.
Chandi will be posting interval voice blog updates of her phase two progress on her website, polarpret.com,
where a live tracking map will also provide her current location at every point along her journey.
“Nothing is impossible. I’ve always had this idea that I can achieve something great, something that allows me
to be a role model,” Chandi shared on her blog.

Pretending sickness may get harder. Slipping a day off work by nervously coughing down the phone to your
boss might not work. Very soon your company might be able to tell whether your symptoms are real, just from your
voice.An Indian research team tried to tell a “cold voice” from a healthy voice. Their research makes use of the fact
that human speech, like any musical instrument, does not produce single frequencies of sounds. Even the best
trained singers cannot hit pure notes like those from tuning forks. The dominant notes in the human voice are
instead accompanied by a series of higher pitch (音高) tones.
Together these sets of notes fit into mathematical patterns called harmonics (和声), with tones having
frequencies that are multiples of the original note. For example, the pitch of the second harmonic note is twice the
frequency of the main note and so on. The loudness of these harmonics in speech tends to fade as they proceed up
the frequency scale. The team reasoned that infection with a cold might change how this decline happened.
To find out, the scientists made use of an unusual resource: recordings of the voices of 630 people in Germany,
111 of whom were suffering from a cold. Each was asked to count from one to 40 and describe what they did at the
weekend. They also read aloud a fable The North Wind and the Sun, which has been a popular text for speech
research since 1949. By breaking down each person’s speech into its spectrum (声谱) of component wavelengths,
the researchers could identify the dominant frequency and the harmonics in each case. They then used machine-
learning to analyse the relationships between the loudness of these harmonics and found patterns that could
distinguish the cold voices from the healthy voices.
The team’s diagnosis of cold voice shows a 70% accuracy. Faced with another dull Monday at the office,

To much of the world, bullfighting has always been distinctly Iberian. But these days, parts of France are
laying claim to this tradition. From the Cte Basque to the arenas of Arles and Beziers, it has spread to towns where
bullfighting has long been banned, and been embraced with such enthusiasm you’d think the sport had been born
there.
The rising passion for blood and sand has been resisted by animal-rights activists. Last month someone set off
a bomb near the bullring in Carcassonne. Yet France’s enthusiasts fiercely defend their right to these moral rituals.
Bullfighting, they insist, is part of the heritage, an expression of a shared regional culture that should be protected.
The rest of the Continent should take note. The paradox (自相矛盾) of an ever-more-united Europe is that as
borders between member states become less important, so do the nations themselves-and regional identities are
valued. It’s easy to forget that most European nation-states were created as we know them only during the 19th
century, after a long series of bloody conflicts. “If the chances of war had been a little different, all the regions
sharing bullfight might have been together,” argues Jean Michel Mariou, a huge fan of bullfighting. On both sides
of the Pyrenees there are Basques, there are Catalans, there are common cultures, he says. “Bullfighting is only one
expression of it.”
Bullfighting isn’t the only cultural tradition that has begun to go beyond borders, of course. To name but one
other: the Celtic revival, built largely around musical groups along the coast of Ireland, Scotland and Cornwall,
Brittany and Normandy. But while bagpipes (风笛) may stir the blood, they don’t spill it. And the violence of
bullfighting horrifies many people who don’t feel they share in its culture.
“The concept of lasting local tradition doesn’t mean anything anymore,” says Josyane Wuerelle, coordinator of
the Federation de Liasions Anti-Corrida in Agde. Bullfighting is about attracting tourists, not honoring local history,
she argues. Robert Marge doesn’t see it that way, of course. He recently declined an invitation to organize a
bullfighting in Paris’s enormous Stade de France. “We didn’t want to sell our souls by bringing bullfight to a region
where it doesn’t exist,” he explains. But he has also got the sense to know that some traditions don’t travel well.
