B Jose Alberto Gutierrez's life would never be the same again after finding a copy of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy in the garbage 20 years ago. It happened while he was driving his garbage truck through wealthier neighborhoods at night and seeing deserted books. It sparked his desire to start rescuing books from the garbage. He took home between 50 and 60 books every morning after his nine-hour shift. Eventually, he turned his book collection into a community library. Colombia’s capital city of Bogota has 13 million residents and 19 public libraries. However, these libraries tend to be far away from where rural and poorer communities live. The option of buying new books is non-existent for families struggling to make ends meet. Having access to a library of books and being taken away to another world while immersed in a book is a luxury for the kids who visit Gutierrez's library.Gutierrez grew up poor, and his family could not afford to educate him beyond primary school. Nevertheless, his mother was a keen reader and read stories to him every night. Her love for books left a deep impression on Gutierrez, who never let a lack of formal education stop him from reading classics by the likes of Victor Hugo, Mario Vargas Llosa and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Today, his community library, called “The Strength of Words“, occupies most of his home and is piled from floor to ceiling with fiction and non-fiction titles. Everything from school textbooks to story books can be found in his collection of more than 20,000 books! The Strength of Words library opens every weekend. It is not just school-going children who are enjoying the benefits of The Strength of Words library. Adults are also welcome to expand their horizons and develop new skills to build a better life for themselves. Despite having done so much for his community, Gutierrez is not yet content to call it a day. He continues to search through bins for reading material and has even travelled to book fairs in Mexico and Chile to sell his idea of building library from unwanted books. 24.What inspired Gutierrez to build the community library? A.The dilemma he faced on the night shift. B.The hobby he has started since childhood. C.Famous novelists he liked very much. D.Abandoned books he came across at work. 25.What can we learn about Gutierrez's mother? A.She was born into a poor family. B.She bought Gutierrez many books. C.She influenced Gutierrez greatly. D.She enjoyed reading Hugo’s works. 26.What does the underlined phrase “call it a day” in the last paragraph mean? A.Take the time. B.Stop the work. C.Make a change. D.Receive a reward. 27.What does Gutierrez's story tell us? A.A book holds a house of gold. B.Constant dropping wears the stone. C.Good things come to those who wait. D.One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.C Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (麻省理工学院) have turned spider webs into music ——creating an strange soundtrack that could help them better understand how the spiders output their complex creations and even how they communicate. The MIT team worked with Berlin-based artist Tomas Saraceno to take 2D (two- dimensional) laser (激光) scans of a spider web, which were linked together and made into a mathematical model that could recreate the web in 3D in VR (virtual reality). They also worked with MIT’s music department to create the virtual instrument. “Even though the web looks really random (随机),there actually are a lot of inside structures and you can visualize (可视化) them and you can look at them, but it’s really hard to grasp for the human imagination or human brain to understand all these structural details,” said MIT engineering professor Markus Buehler, who presented the work on Monday at a virtual meeting of the American Chemical Society. Listening to the music while moving through the VR spider web lets you see and hear these structural changes and gives a better idea of how spiders see the world, he told CNN. “Spiders use vibrations (振动) as a way to locate themselves, to communicate with other spiders and so the idea of thinking really like a spider would experience the world was something that was very important to us as spider material scientists,” Buehler said. Spiders are able to build their webs without shelves or supports, so having a better idea of how they work could lead to the development of advanced new 3D printing techniques. “The reason why I did that is I wanted to be able to get information really from the spider world, which is very weird and mysterious,” Buehler explained. In addition to the scientific value, Buehler said the webs are musically interesting and that you can hear the sounds the spider creates during construction. “It’s unusual and eerie and scary, but finally beautiful.” he described. 28.What have MIT scientists done according to the passage? A.They have translated spider webs into sounds. B.They have made a mathematical model to produce webs. C.They have created a soundtrack to catch spiders. D.They have known how spiders communicate. 29.What can we know about spider webs from paragraph 3? A.Their structures are beautiful and clear. B.Professor Markus Buehler knows them well. C.The American Chemical Society presents the result. D.They are complex for people to figure it out.30.In which field will the study be helpful? A.virtual reality B.printing C.painting D.film-making 31.What is the main idea of the passage? A.It tells us that the music created by spiders is scary. B.It shows how the researchers carry out the experiment. C.It presents a new and creative way to study spiders. D.It explains why scientists did the experiment. D Have you ever taken a personality test and found the results to be scarily accurate, checked your horoscope (星 象学) and had everything come true or taken an online quiz that told you precisely what your favorite Disney princess means about you? Well, we certainly have done so too many times, so we decided to do a little investigation into how Internet quizzes, magazines and horoscope books seem to know us so well. We discovered that we’ve all been falling victim to the Barnum effect. The Barnum Effect is the phenomenon that occurs when individuals believe that personality descriptions apply specifically to them, despite the fact that the description is actually filled with information that applies to everyone. It was named after P.T. Barnum, a famous 19th century showman, who would famously say, “There’s a fool born every minute.” Indeed, Barnum proved to be right, as pseudoscience (伪科学) — such as astrology and personality test — remains popular to this day. The Barnum effect explains why extremely general statements, such as the results of your personality test, seem so specific to you. Don’t believe us? Well, late psychology professor Bertram Forer offered some proof. In a historic study, Forer conducted a personality test to his students. Forer copied statements such as “You have a great need for other people to like and admire you.” and “You have a tendency to be critical of yourself” from the newspaper’s horoscope column and gave a test to every student, Forer asked his students to rate the accuracy of the test from one to five, with “one” being the least accurate and “five” being the most accurate. The average rating was 4.26. The universally high ratings from students on the personality test supported the Barnum effect. One of the most important factors when reproducing this study is to keep the statements as vague as possible, with a mix of mostly positive and some negative content. For example, using the phrase “at times” makes for a powerful Barnum Effect. See “At times you are extroverted and sociable, while at other times you are introvertedand reserved”— who would not agree with that statement? So, keep in mind that we are not immune to the Barnum effect. Take everything you hear with several grains of salt. 32.What is the purpose of Paragraph 2? A.To present a controversial opinion. B.To provide an example of an idea. C.To offer a solution to a problem. D.To define the meaning of a term. 33.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about? A.Potential application of the Barnum effect. B.Further explanation of the Barnum effect. C.Supporting evidence for the Barnum effect. D.A reasonable doubt of the research process. 34.Why do so many people believe the statements in horoscope and personality tests? A.They are so specific. B.They are ambiguous. C.They are positive. D.They are believable. 35.How is the passage organized? A.Problem—solution. B.Cause—effect. C.Phenomenon—analysis. D.Claim—counterclaim. 第二节(共5小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The days when art was an Olympic sport Did you know that creating works of art used to be an Olympic competition? 36 In the first year, Walter Winans became the first and the only Olympian to win medals for both art and sports. Despite this seemingly optimistic start, the idea of the arts being included in the Olympic Games soon met with disinterest, finally resulting in the removal of the art competition from the Olympic Games. 37 The idea to include art in the Olympics came from Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who was the founder of the International Olympic Committee, which created the modern Olympics. Coubertin believed that the arts and sports were linked and was impressed by anyone who had a firm command of both a sport and an artistic discipline(项目). Why aren’t the arts included in the Olympics today? For starters, only amateurs were allowed to compete in the arts part of the Olympics. 38 Having artists of average quality competing while only the most competent athletes were allowed to compete created a dramatic divide and gave the impression that the arts were not as important as sports. Secondly, works of art created had to have sports as the subject matter. 39 Limiting the subjects alsocontributed to making the arts part of the Olympic Games boring to the general public. Finally, one of the biggest reasons was that the arts are subjective. Sports can be judged by time and distance, making it easy to determine who is the winner. 40 This difficulty in judging a definite winner resulted in the arts part becoming a non-competitive exhibition that ran for the duration of the Olympic Games. A.Why was art made an Olympic discipline? B.What is a discipline in the Olympic Games? C.This rule made the objects produced seem really boring. D.The arts, on the other hand, are not quite so easy to judge E.However, the arts part of the Olympics Games was soon abandoned F.This means that many famous artists were banned from participating. G.For 36 years, from 1912 to 1948, artists participated in the Olympic Games. 第三部分语言运用(共两节, 满分30分) 第一节(共15小题; 每小题1分, 满分15分) 阅读下面短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 There are days when I feel I am a student in my classroom rather than a teacher. They encounter something they are really into and itch 59 (try) their hand at writing, imitating first, before eventually forming a style of their own, he says. He recalled his days in the army in Baoding, Hebei province, giving lessons on Marxist philosophy, political economy and scientific socialism during the day, and writing at night. Every day he waited for the sound of the postman’s motorcycle 60 (hope). His effort paid off when, in May 1981, a local bimonthly literature magazine decided to publish his maiden work. Mo Yan then struggled for a while, before he figured out that his rural hometown in Shandong province and a place he’s most familiar with, would provide 61 inexhaustible source of writing material. The panel also included Liang Xiaosheng and Liu Zhenyun, whose works 62 (reach) a multitude of readers at home and abroad so far. Every day when he came home from school, Jake would list everything bad that happened that day! On his ninth birthday, we saved enough money to take the family to Disneyland for two days. His dad and I didn’t make much then, so it cost a considerable amount, but we felt Jake’s birthday was worth it. After doing Disneyland to death (玩够了), we returned to our hotel room, all exhausted. And I asked the birthday boy, “Did you have fun today, Jake?” All my fault-finding son could say to me was “Pirates (海盗) of the Caribbean was closed!” “Jake Marshall,” Iwas clearly unable to contain my anger, “we stood in line for an hour and a half to see The Haunted Mansion. We rode Space Mountain three times. We spent two days playing in the park, and all you can say is, Pirates of the Caribbean was closed?” Clearly, something had to be done about his negative attitude and I was going to be the one to do it! I was determined to help him. I read every article and bought every book. With the help of great resources, I found my son had the tendency to see the worst in every situation. My research told me that people with negativity have an emotional need for order and sensitivity. That meant I needed to listen to my son’s daily pessimistic reports. My usual reaction was to try to talk Jake out of his negativity, but that wouldn’t satisfy his need for sensitivity, so I had to let him finish his complaints and ask what good things happened. Then I needed to wait until he could tell me. This would help Jake realize that good things really were happening to him. 注意: 1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好; One day Jake came home from school and complained as usual. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________ From then on, Jake came to understand the power of seeing good points. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________
