The first time a tortoise walked through my hut at Middle Camp on Aldabra Atoll, I was amazed. I grabbed my
camera and carefully positioned myself to take this wildlife encounter. The second time: same thing. The third time:
I picked up my phone and took a snapshot. By the fourth or fifth time, I didn’t even look when I felt something
bump into me. I knew what it was.
I was there to shoot a story about island restoration in the Seychelles, far off the east coast of Africa in the
Indian Ocean. Until roughly the middle of the past century, the small island nation showed signs of real
environmental killing — local vegetation — cleared to make way for coconut plantations, foreign rats and mice
running uncontrolled, native sea turtles and giant tortoises being exploited. Biodiversity seemed destroyed. But then
the country experienced a shift in conservation awareness — and the giant Aldabra tortoises are among its most
visible signs.
Every morning when I woke up and walked outside the hut, I had to remind myself that I hadn’t traveled back
in time. I could see flightless Aldabra rails, coconut crabs the size of dinner plates, and giant tortoises — roughly
four feet long and weighing up to 550 pounds — just wandering around. The number of sharks in the bay was
crazy. Frigatebirds and boobies (鲣鸟) nested in the mangroves (a kind of tree). When we left our hut doors open,
which we often did to let in air, the tortoises would walk right through.
In the late afternoon or early evening, whenever they’d finished eating, the tortoises would drop themselvesdown and fall asleep with their heads outstretched. That made nighttime trips to the outhouse perilous. To get there,
we’d have to go 200 feet into the mangroves, negotiating what I called the tortoise slalom trail.
It was a track without a pattern, because of course they picked different places to sleep every night. Avoiding
them was important: Falling headfirst over a tortoise onto the sharp coral rock could lead to serious injury on an
island far from medical facilities.
Nothing was easy on Aldabra, and much of it was insanely difficult. Yet living among the tortoises in this
primordial place, in one of the last spots where reptiles still rule, was one of the happiest times of my life.

It’s no secret that college is expensive. I received financial aid, and I was able to cover the cost of enrollment,
books, supplies, course materials, and additional school-related fees. But I could not afford housing, transportation,
food, healthcare, or other basic necessities. The longer each semester went on, the harder the choices became.
When spring semester ended that first year at college, I had good grades, but I did not have two quarters to my
name. I decided that if I could afford to be a full-time student, I would need to work a full-time job. Soon, I started
working at the airport as a cleaner of aircraft cabins. My first shift at the airport was a graveyard shift, where I
detailed aircraft of varying sizes. During this total night shift, I have to do “deep cleaning”, which meant cleaning
everything and even I had to check every safety compartment and replace any missing items. This could be
disgusting work.
Another fact upset me a lot that working at the airport and going to school did not fit easily together. Some
days 1 was too exhausted after a night shift to get to class. Other days I didn’t have time to complete schoolassignments owing to a busy workday. At the end of the fall semester, I received a final warning for my attendance
at my job. Once again, I was between a rock and a hard place and had to make a decision. I wanted to go to school
and excel, but I also had grown accustomed to financially supporting myself.
Ultimately, I chose to temporarily stop going to school and to continue working, a decision. I would later
regret. The airline closed for various reasons. I felt stupid. I had put a lot into this job, even sacrificing my
education, and now I would have neither job nor education. I’d finally learned what my grandmother meant when
she once said that your job is temporary, and your education is forever.

Michael Faraday was an English chemist and physicist born in a working class on 22 September 1791.
Faraday’s father suffered from long-term health problems that often impeded his work. As a result, Faraday’s
family had little money and Faraday got a very little formal schooling. But Faraday had an active curiosity and
determination to learn. While working in London as a teenager, he had access to a wide range of books and he read
everything he could get his hands on. By doing a lot of reading, Faraday soon educated himself on many scientific
subjects, and his life as a scientist began.
In 1812, Faraday attended four lectures at the Royal Institution given by a famous chemist named Humphrey
Davy. Afterwards Faraday sent a letter to Davy, expressing a strong interest in the subjects covered in the lectures
and offering his services as a lab assistant. A year later, Davy accepted Faraday as his lab assistant. Thanks to his
work with Davy, Faraday got a complete scientific education.He soon began to research and experiments with electricity. Although his time was mostly spent helping Davy,
Faraday began to work on his own as a chemist and scientist of great importance. When Davy retired in 1827,
Faraday took his place as the head of the chemistry department of the Royal Institute. Upon taking up the position
he could focus on his own research, and Faraday’s most influential and celebrated work began in the 1830s. In
1831, he discovered electromagnetic induction(电磁感应), a breakthrough in the field of technology. In 1846 he
gave a lecture that presented important ideas about the nature of electricity, and these later inspired the historical
work of James Maxwell related to electromagnetic field theory.

Victor felt neglected by his parents. He felt that they loved Lina more than him. As a result, he tried to attract
his parents’ attention by becoming resistant. One evening, Victor’s parents were called up by his teacher because

downwards in the past two months. Before that, he had been a model student.
