The Blue Eye of Siberia
Part 1: Read and Explore
In the heart of Siberia, there is a lake so old and so deep that it holds one-fifth of the world‘s freshwater. Its
name is Lake Baikal. Local people call it the “Blue Eye of Siberia”. It is not only the deepest but also one of the
clearest lakes on Earth.
Lake Baikal is more than 25 million years old. That makes it the oldest lake in the world. Its deepest point
reaches 1,642 metres. If you put the Eiffel Tower into the water, five Eiffel Towers would not be enough to touch
the bottom!
The water in Lake Baikal is so clear that in winter, you can see 40 metres below the ice. But do not be fooled
by its beauty—the water is icy cold, and swimming here is risky. Yet, this cold environment is home to over 2,000
kinds of animals. More than half of them can be found nowhere else on Earth. The Baikal seal, or nerpa, is one of
them. It is the only freshwater seal in the world.
However, Lake Baikal is facing problems. Factories near the lake pour waste into the water. Some visitors
leave rubbish behind. The future of this natural wonder is not as safe as before.Still, every year, thousands of curious travellers come to see the “Blue Eye”. They come not just to take
