十、阅读理解。
(A)
The Xisha Islands are in the northwest part of the South China Sea. They are beautiful places with nice views
and many resources (资源). This is how our primary school textbook describes them.
Many Chinese people know about the South China Sea and the Xisha Islands, but only a few have been there.
These islands are far away and have a weak ecosystem (生态环境). Because of this, most activities there are just
fishing, protecting the environment, and doing scientific study. Visitors are mainly government workers,
fishermen’s relatives, and media (媒体) members.
In 2007, the Chinese government set up Sansha City on Xisha’s Yongxing Island. I once visited Yongle
Islands, part of Sansha. I thought the fishermen’s homes would be simple, but they were very comfortable. The
island had a vegetable garden, and green vegetables were seen on the local tables. I stayed in a hotel with a
playground downstairs. After dinner, everyone got together to play games. Later, I walked along the island’s paths,
enjoying the sea view and peaceful moment.
Fishermen told me they used traditional ways to fish. They knew exactly which fish could be caught because
of their different sizes. As for smaller fish, fishermen released them back into the sea.
One thing that I never forgot was an outdoor movie called Island Keeper. It was about a couple who guarded
(保卫) the island for 32 years. Many fishermen were moved to tears. One fisherman said as life on the island
improved, his family loved to stay on the island during the fishing season. He also drove a passenger boat, so he
made more money even when he was not fishing.
The careful management (管理) of the Xisha Islands limits (限制) tourism but gives job opportunities (机会)
to local fishermen.

A.looked for B.cut…down C.took care of D.let...go
4.What can we infer from the text now?

(B)
Do you know what the world’s highest waterfall is? You may say that it is Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls is really
beautiful, but as for height, the most fantastic one in the world is Angel Falls. It is deep in the jungles (丛林) of
Venezuela and stands about 979 meters tall-about 15 times higher than Niagara Falls.
Few people have ever seen Angel Falls. It’s very hard to get there. If you go there on foot, you have to travel
for weeks through thick jungles filled with wild animals and dangerous plants. If you go by plane from Caracas, a
city on the southern coast, it will take about four hours.
One interesting thing about Angel Falls is how people found them. They named them after an American pilot.
His name was Jimmy Angel. In 1937, his plane crashed (坠毁) near the top of the falls while he was searching for
gold. That’s how he found them. Luckily, Jimmy Angel and his passengers survived (幸存) the crash.
Angel Falls drops nearly a kilometer from a table-top mountain. The water seems to be dropping straight out
of the clouds. The height of the falls is very great. By the time the water reaches the ground, it has already turned
into fog. During the dry season, there might not be much water, but in the rainy season, the falls are amazing to see.
Many people consider Angel Falls to be nature’s most wonderful creation.
根据短文内容,判断下列句子正 (T)、(F)。
1.Niagara Falls is deep in the jungles of Venezuela.
2.Many people have ever seen Angel Falls, the most fantastic one in the world.
3.If you want to visit Angel Falls, you’ll spend four hours getting there on foot.

The Hottest Place on Earth
Part 1: Read and Explore
Where is the hottest place on Earth? You might think it is in Africa, but it is not. The hottest place is actually

enough water. But today, people still visit this place. Why? Because it is also very beautiful. The sand dunes,
