Jim and I were like brothers. We walked to school together, shared lunch every day, and both dreamed of
winning the school’s basketball game. That’s why I felt so excited when our teacher said we’d be the main players
of the team.
But everything changed a week before the game. I passed Jim’s desk after class and heard him say to our
teammate, “He’s not ready for the big game. He always misses the key shots (关键投篮).” My face turned red. I
didn’t let him explain—just shouted angrily, “I thought you were my friend!” and ran away. After that, we didn’t
speak a word. When we passed each other in the hallway, we’d look away. I felt lonely, and even my basketball
skills got worse without my best friend practicing with me.
Mom noticed my sadness. “You look like you’re carrying a heavy bag,” she said at dinner. I told her
everything. “Did you ask Jim what he really meant?” she asked softly. “Misunderstandings are like knots (结)—you
need to talk to open them, not pull harder.” That night, I wrote Jim a note asking to meet at our usual basketball
court.
When I saw Jim, I was nervous but started first: “I’m sorry I shouted at you.” Jim was surprised. “I’m the one
who’s sorry! I was talking about your old shoes—they’re too slippery (容易打滑的), so you sometimes miss shots.
I wanted to buy you a new pair but didn’t know how to say it.” We both laughed. I realized how silly I was to
misunderstand him.
We practiced together that afternoon, just like before. In the game, we won the second prize. But the real win
was getting our friendship back. I learned that good communication isn’t just about talking—it’s about listening,
too. It’s the best way to keep relationships warm and strong.

How would you feel if moving to a new town meant losing track of your friends? What if the only way of
getting news from faraway friends was writing letters that took ages to be delivered (递送)? This was how things
worked not very long ago. Thanks to advances in technology, how we make friends and communicate with them
has changed greatly.
Nowadays, we can move around the world and still stay in touch with our friends. Social media tools (社交媒
体工具) let us see what our friends are busy with and maintain friendships.
The digital (数字) age also enables us to find people who share our interests. Whatever our hobbies, the
Internet can connect us with others who also enjoy doing them, even if they live on the other side of the world.
But when you “friend” people online, does this mean that they really are your friends? It depends.
If people always exchange true personal information online, then yes, these friendships can be real and
meaningful. But we need to remember that what we see on social media is often not the whole truth about a person.
Sometimes smiling photos can hide real problems. On the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog. A young person
could be old; a woman could be a man; we could even be sharing our information with criminals.
But this doesn’t mean that we should throw the baby out with the bathwater. Although technology has changed
the way we acquire (获得) friends, the meaning of friendship and our longing for friends remain the same. AsAristotle said, “No one would choose to live without friends, even if he had all other goods.”

Fiona was a very popular girl in school. From an early age, she made an effort to be kind and friendly to
everyone. She invited the whole class to her birthday party and occasionally (偶尔) gave gifts to everybody.
However, everything changed on International Day of Friendship. In class that day, everyone had to make
three gifts to give to their three best friends. Fiona enjoyed the task of choosing three from among all her
classmates. But when all the gifts had been made and shared out, she was the only one that didn’t receive a gift!
Fiona hadn’t expected this and felt terrible, crying for hours. Everyone came to comfort her, but each stayed only a
short time before leaving—just as she had done to others so many times.
That night, Fiona told her mother about everything. Her mother said, “My dear, you are a lovely girl, but youcan’t be a close friend to everyone. You cannot buy friends with a smile or a few good words. If you want true
friends, you must give them time and real care. A true friend is always there for you, in good times and bad.
Hearing this, Fiona decided to change her ways to finally have some true friends. She thought of her mother,

Bridges of Understanding
Part 1: Read and Explore
The Unspoken Expectation
Maya had always been a good student, but recently her grades in math started to slip. Her father, a university
professor, looked at her latest test paper with a deep frown. “A B minus? Maya, you know our family’s standards.
Your cousin Leo got an A+ again,” he said without looking up. His words felt like a heavy weight on Maya’s chest.
She wanted to explain—the new teacher’s method confused her, and she was trying her best—but the fear of
disappointing him more kept her silent. She just nodded, feeling a mix of pressure and hurt.
For days, the atmosphere at home was tense. Maya’s mother noticed her quiet sadness and found a crumpled,
unfinished letter in her notebook. It began, “Dear Dad, I feel like I can never be good enough for you...” That night,
her mother spoke to her father. “She’s not just a student; she’s our daughter who needs to know we love her, not
just her grades.”
Her father was shocked. He never meant to make her feel that way. He thought pushing for excellence was his
way of showing he cared. He realized that by constantly comparing her to Leo, he wasn’t encouraging her but
making her doubt herself. He had made a serious fault in how he communicated.
The next day, he knocked on Maya’s door. “Maya, can we talk?” he began, his voice softer than usual. “I’m
sorry. It was my fault. I was so focused on the grade that I didn’t see how much pressure it put on you. I love you
no matter what.” Maya finally felt heard. They talked for a long time. She explained her struggles, and he offered to
help her find a better way to study math instead of just expecting an A.
Sometimes, the people who love us most can hurt us without knowing. The bravest and kindest thing we can
do is to clear the air—to build a bridge of understanding with honest words, so that love is felt, not just intended.
