Ye Haitao has helped over hundreds of children with lessons and homework for free over the
last 23 years.
When he was a young man, he dreamed of being a teacher, because he thought it was the
greatest job in the world. In 1993 he went to a teachers college. However, in his second college
year, he occasionally felt a slight pain in his right leg. Worse, he couldn’t stand at last. But the
doctor couldn’t do anything to help him. He had to leave school, and lived in a terrible life.
One day some villagers came to ask whether he would help children with their study. At the
time Ye heard there were a number of left-behind children in his village. He decided to open a free
class in the summer of 1999. The students came after school and during summer and winter
vacations.
All the desks were around his bed. When Ye taught them, he had to lie on his side. He would
feel very uncomfortable over time, but he continued for over twenty years. So far, many of his
students have gone to the college.
Seeing the children improve with his help, Ye is happy and considers his work meaningful.
