Eartha lost her balance and fell heavily onto the floor. “I'll never be as flexible as you are,
Grandma,”she sighed softly.
Eartha's Grandma had been practising yoga for more than 50 years, who could twist, bend and curl her body
with ease. She could even stand on her hands and pull her body into different poses.
“Eartha, your name means ‘patience’. You need patience for yoga,” said her Grandma. Like many
schools in the country, Eartha's school held an annual yoga competition. Eartha wanted to make her Grandma
proud. But she could hardly stand on one leg.
Grandma returned to the kitchen. Eartha kept practicing hard. She stood straight, her arms at her sides. She
moved her hands and knees, arching her back. All of these poses were easy, while the competition was certain to
be harder. So she tried more challenging poses, lying on her stomach and pushing up on her hands. Her arms soon
got tired and she collapsed to the floor. Eartha wandered into the kitchen.
“Finished already?” asked Grandma.
“It's hard,” Eartha said. “How did you get to be so strong?”
Grandma smiled. “Patience.”
The next morning, Eartha felt ached and sore all over the body. Her legs hurt so badly from the
poses she practiced that she even wanted to quit. However, her grandmother's words echoed in her mind, and she
held the pose for a longer time.
Each day Eartha would practice a new pose, before going over the poses she had practised the previous few
days. With the date of the competition approaching, she started to feel stronger and more flexible. Her arms and
legs stopped trembling.
The day of the yoga competition arrived as expected. In the gym, Eartha lay on her back with her knees bent
and placed her hands on the floor behind her. Everything went smoothly. Just then, so eager was she to win
Grandma's pride that her poses displayed a mix of impatience, and rigidness. Eartha fell on the mat, which cost her
edge over other competitors. A bell rang, ending the first half of the competition.

Thinking she ruined all because of impatience, Eartha looked at the audience for
Grandma. Grandma settled at the front seat, kindly smiling and waving to her.
Head hanging, Eartha shuffled to Grandma with heavy footsteps. “I'm proud of
you!” Grandma whispered softly. Astonished and unexpected, Eartha stared at
Grandma with a bit skeptical expression. Although relieved of frustrationtemporarily, she was increasingly concerned about the next half. Sensing her
worries, Grandma asked if she still remembered the meaning of her name. Eartha
nodded, reflecting on her hard practices.
Calm and confident, Eartha stepped on the stage for the second half of the
competition. Completely relaxed, Eartha immersed herself in poses, letting go of
anything that might distract her. So full of patience and balance was every pose that
flexibility was perfectly demonstrated, which made her stand out among other
competitors. When she finished, the whole gym burst into thunderous applause and
Grandma beamed at her with unprecedented pride. Smiling back, Eartha ultimately
understood the significance of patience and calmness.

Early in the morning, I went to the ocean beach to play my guitar. The usually crowded beach
was
deserted except for two people. On one side of the boardwalk(木板人行道) was a woman who
was cleaning the
beach with a broom; on the other side was a lone figure sitting and staring at the sea. Chose a
spot between them and began to play.
As I played, the woman with the broom swept her way right next to me. She stopped sweeping
and leaned on her broom, smiling at me. She appeared to be homeless with dirty mismatched clothes.
“You sure play beautiful music,” she said. “I think my friend would like your music. I want
to hire you to play for her.” She pointed to the lone figure staring out at the ocean, then produced a few
coins from her pocket. “I don’t have much, and I know you're worth a lot, but if I give this to you,
will you play a song for her? She’s going through a lot of sufferings. I know the music will make her
feel better.”
I told her I’d be happy to play for free.
As we walked over to her friend, the Broom Lady told me that her friend had not talked for
weeks. We approached, and the Broom Lady introduced me, “Annie, I got you a present to cheer you
up. It’s a guitar man who is going to play a song especially for you.”
Annie didn’t move. She was wearing dark sunglasses and had an old coat pulled up to cover most
of her face.
I sat next to Annie and played. As I played, I put every thought into having good things
happen for this woman. I played for quite a while.
Suddenly, Annie turned toward me and said, “You make it so beautiful. Can feel it inside my
heart.” 注意: 1.续写词数应为150 左右;

Paragraph1:
She took off her sunglasses. It was a pair of dull eyes with no sheet of hope in it. I
nodded in approval and went on with my performance. The sound from my guitar
spread along the beach line, carrying my understanding and comfort in the soft
breeze. It was apparent that she was deeply touched by the song with tears rolling
down her cheeks. Sensing the touch in her heart, I buried myself in playing the
guitar.
Paragraph2:
When I stopped playing and looked up, I was shocked to see a small crowd
around us. A blast of applause burst out, and some of them thumbed up at me. The
Broom Lady went to cast her arms around Annie, who was smiling, her eyes
shining with tears of hope. I bowed to the crowd and let out “Life is as beautiful as
music. Let’s appreciate it together!” “Thank you for your music.” Annie’s eyes
twinkled with gratitude and pleasure when she uttered. I had put on varieties of
shows, but this was the most rewarding one.

“What will we be singing for the contest this year?” a student from my high school
choir asked eagerly.
I worried about this moment. "I was thinking,” I said, “maybe we would skip the
contest and just work hard on the concerts this year.”
"NO!" the kids protested.
"We've got to go to the contest!”
"It's a tradition!”
Indeed, award plaques(牌匾)lined the front wall of the music room from the past
successes of large, talented classes. But a change in educational policies, with an
emphasis on academics had reduced my choir to a mere thirty-two young,
inexperienced kids who could sing only a simple melody.
"I'll have to think about it, “ I said, hoping their enthusiasm would die off in a
couple of weeks. Quite on the contrary, more determined, they begged and insistedevery day. To protect their pride, I couldn't tell them they weren't good enough. But I
wasn't a miracle worker. And so I hesitated about this dilemma.
Finally, one morning I stepped into class. "Look at the clock!” I demanded. "We've
wasted two full minutes because some of you don't have your music ready. If we are
entering the contest - w The rest of my sentence was lost in cheers of delight and
applause.
“From now on, “I continued when the noise weakened, “you will find the day's
lesson plan on the board. Make full preparations for each class and follow my
instructions absolutely. You will work much harder than you've ever worked in any
class before. And if one of these rules is broken, we will not go to the contest. “
I was certain they would fail to keep this contract, and no one would be
embarrassed. But the kids remained focused, following the rules strictly. Each
morning witnessed their diligence:working on sight-reading, learning musical terms,
rehearsing, etc. Their progress was so remarkable that even I began believing in their
dream.
When the contest day finally arrived, the kids felt ready and confident to take on
the world! Their eyes, however, opened wide when the Madison choir marched in
seventy-five members strong. My kids' jaws dropped when 125 students from King
School arrived. Two private schools came with fifty members each, and finally forty-
five members from Milwaukee School of Art.

One sample writing:
Then came the turn for my choir. Extremely confident, they mounted on the stage as werehearsed. “Smile!" I mouthed. I took a deep breath and we began. Having performed masterfully,
we finished our three songs, and I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs, “YOU DID IT!" What
delighted me more was that they fully enjoyed their performance without getting panicked, winning
storms of cheers and applause. My heart swelled with pride for this little group as they realized their
dream with the same bravery, they had shown from day one.
After all the choirs had performed , we waited in our assigned room for the results.
Sensing their worries about the group size, I reassured them: it was the performance rather than the
size that mattered and most importantly, we enjoyed it. Time ticking, kids waited anxiously.
Eventually, there came the news that we got the highest marks of all. All kids were screaming and
embracing. Warm tears wetting my cheeks, I stood frozen, staring at the list in disbelief. It was a
blessing that I was surrounded by kids who had a dream, who refused to give up, who taught me
never to doubt the possibility of success for any student ever again.

Rick, a ten-year-old boy, was constantly angry at everything around him. He
always fought in school with the other kids. Once he had an outburst in school. Upset
by something a classmate said to him, he pushed the boy, and a fight happened. When
the teacher stepped in to break it up, Rick went crazy, throwing papers and books
around the classroom and rushing out. His teachers couldn't say anything that would
comfort the kid. And the parents of his schoolmates were getting concerned. Rick was
earning quite the reputation. After talking with school officials, Rick's mom tried
everything she could to calm Rick down.
She tried different methods until one day she came home with a canvas (画布)
and paint. " What's this?", Rick asked. Rick's mom handed over the painting
equipment and said, "Whenever you feel angry, paint whatever you're angry about
instead of bursting out." Rick wasn't that happy about it but he gave it a try anyway.
Over the next few weeks, the young boy created several artworks. They mostly
showed disturbing images though. So, his mom took all of the paintings and called
Rick over so that they could talk about them. "Tell me, Rick. What are these paintings
about?"
"Well, the first painting is about how some of the kids show off their new clothes and
pencil cases. The next painting is about my teacher who keeps telling me about how
I'm doing things wrong. And the last painting is about how one of my schoolmate's
fathers suggested that I change my attitude. All of them make me so angry. "Rick's
mom, in a calm voice, took Rick by her side and told him:" Don't you see it, Rick?"
"See what?" Rick asked. "You're so angry at all of these things but not once did you
try to understand why you're getting so angry. What have all these people done to
you, really?"

范文
Rick was lost in thought. It slowly dawned on him that people he was angry at had done
nothing wrong. His classmates who showed their new clothes and pencil cases to others might just
want to share their happiness with friends. His teacher did blame him but he was being a problem.
And his schoolmate's father was just trying to help him correct his mistakes. They had no intention
to hurt him but he just let his unreasonable anger consume him and hurt them. How ridiculous he
had been!
Rick knew it was time to change. From then on, Rick tried his best to control his temper.
Every time he felt he was to explode, he would walk away and ask himself why he was angry and
whether it was reasonable to be angry. Then he would find his peace and laughed his anger away.
Gradually, everyone saw a different Rick. He no longer shouted at others or threw things away. He
chatted with classmates after class and complimented their new clothes and pencil cases. He even
helped teachers carry books before class sometimes. Rick's change surprised everyone and they all
felt happy for him.
