The Bicycle
When I was nine I needed to earn some money, so I asked Mr. Miceli, the newspaper publisher in my Chicago
neighbourhood, about an after-school paper route. He agreed only if I had a bicycle.
My dad bought me a used bike, but right after that he fell ill and couldn’t teach me to ride. Mr. Miceli,
however, merely asked to see the bike. So I walked to his garage, showed it to him and got the job.
At first, I filled my delivery bag with rolled papers over the handlebars and walked my bike down the
sidewalks. But pushing a bike with a load of papers was awkward; after a few days I borrowed Mom’s two-wheeled
shopping cart.
It took me longer to make my deliveries by cart, but I didn’t mind. I sent each paper to its proper destination.
In rain or snow, I put Dad’s old raincoat over the cart to keep the papers dry. I got to meet everyone in the
neighborhood — working-class people of Italian, German or Polish origins who were invariably kind to me.
When Dad returned from the hospital, he was too weak to resume his original job. Now we needed every
penny we could raise to pay bills, so we sold the bike. Mr. Miceli must have known I wasn’t using a bike, but he
said nothing about it to me.
On the Thursday evening before Christmas, 1951, I rang my first customer’s doorbell. Even though the lights
were on, nobody answered, so I went on to the next house. No answer, nor did anyone respond at the next family on
my route, or the one after.
I was very worried; I had to pay for my papers every Friday. And while it was almost Christmas, I never
thought that everyone would be out shopping. So I was very happy when, going up the walkway to Mr. Gordon’s
house, I heard music and voices. I rang the bell.

of a house nearby. Someone who lied on the first floor had been smoking and fell asleep. The house burned down.
All the people escaped, but the house was completely destroyed with everything in it.
All this young man had were the clothes on his back and his pickup truck. He had no family in the area and
nowhere to go. My friend was putting him up for a few days until he could decide what to do next.
Those of us sitting at the dinner table were horrified. Everyone started opening their wallets to contribute
money. My friend put up her hand and said, “He will not accept money. We tried to persuade him, but he thinks it is
charity and won’t take it. All he wants is a warm coat and some used clothing if anyone has some.”
We were all more than happy to fulfil this request and were told that he wore a size 2XL. None of us knew
men who wore that size, so it was going to be a bit of a challenge to take care of this quickly.
It was a typically cold New York Christmas, and I couldn’t imagine him without a coat. I shed tears on the
drive home, a combination of grateful tears for the many blessings I had in my life and sad tears for this poor young
man and his troubles.
I went to bed and woke up in the middle of the night with a very clear thought in my mind. I was to find this
young man a coat.

kitchen table. “You can see I’ve been saving up the stamps for just the right purchase.”
We sat down at the table and looked through the baby section of the S & H content. My eyes fell on abassinet (摇篮) with a silk canopy (罩篷) over it. “That’s what a young mother will need,” Grandmother said.
“Let’s see if we save 20 books of stamps, we can get a bassinet.”
In the coming weeks, we tried hard to collect the stamps, but before Maria and Tony left, we were three books
short. And there were no angels helping us with the stamps either.
“Open the content,” Grandmother said. “Let’s pick a bassinet we can afford.” We chose one without a canopy.
The next day we went to the Green Stamp store to get it. “Maria will love this one just as much.”
Grandmother assured me as she pushed the door open. I couldn’t help but feel disappointed. Grandmother
gave the clerk the information and handed over the 17 books of stamps we saved. The clerk walked to the
backroom and returned empty-handed. “I’m sorry,” she said. “We don’t have such a bassinet for the 17 books of
stamps.”

confused.
Still feeling bad for her, James returned to his other engagements that day. Suddenly, the girl came running up
to him and began pulling his shirt.
“Daddy, did you come for me? Are you going to take me home?” she asked, smiling through tears, and James
was shocked. He’d never had a girlfriend, much less a child. Why was she calling him dad? Trying his best to hide
his shock, he smiled and knelt in front of her.“Hi, I’m James. You’re Layla, right? I’m sorry, sweetie, but I am not
your daddy.”

your room. I helped make your bed.” Trudy pulled back, speechless.
At this point, I stepped towards her and said, "Welcome to our home, Trudy. “She looked at me with such
blank eyes. But with her head bowed, she simply said, eyes moving back and forth like a creature looking for a way
out, “No, thank you.”
For the first two weeks, Trudy was very quiet. She would come into the kitchen while I was working, and we
would discuss school and what she would like to do in the future. Mrs. Kline had given us all the information about
her history, but I never mentioned the terrible things that had happened to her.
As the days went by, Trudy became a delight to have around. Very quickly, it seemed like she had always been
with us. The girls would sit in each other’s rooms and giggle(咯咯笑) like typical teenagers. It was a sound that
warmed my soul. However, when they talked about new clothes, Trudy fell silent again.

In the back of my mind I counted the hungry guests who would be coming to our house for dinner. I put my
head down on my desk, already feeling defeated.
There’s no way possible, I thought. But the sympathy I heard in my husband’s voice struck a nerve inside me.
“Sure.” I replied.I finished my work and prayed all the way to the nearest grocery store.
The turkeys were indeed on sale—29 cents a pound, but I discovered one big problem. When I read the sign
posted on the freezer door, my heart sank. “Limit one.”
“But I need two,” I uttered to myself, I decided to find the manager. I explained the problem. He made an
exception.
After tossing two turkeys in the cart, I began my shopping. It was amazing how many buy-one-get-one-free
items were being featured that day. In addition, I had all the right coupons to get exactly what both families needed
for a hearty Thanks giving dinner. I held my breath while the cashier rang up my groceries.
To my surprise, I had enough money. I was even able to purchase a package of cookies for the five-year-old
who had stolen my heart, even though I had never met her.

were a little wet. But the car only sank further into the sand.
Anxiously, we walked to the road, eager to stop a vehicle and let it help pull our car out of the sand. Our coats
and hair were wetter and wetter. Before the journey, we hadn’t prepared umbrellas or carried any food. Now, we
were hungry and cold, standing in the rain. After waiting for a long time, there wasn’t one vehicle passing.
Just when we were helpless, we saw a farmhouse not far away. “Can they help us?” I asked. My dad was
doubtful. Still, we reached there, and found it was a big family. They seemed poor and unfriendly. My dad told
them our problem and begged them to help us pull our car out.

色的) photo, and with tears in his eyes, recall happy memories of his wife.
One weekend, my father went to check on Jimmy, but a rare heavy snow happened to fall. It was so heavy that
he couldn’t get his old truck up Jimmy’s uneven (不平坦的), snow-covered road Nobody could understand what
made Dad climb the 400 yards or so to Jimmy’s house. My brother and I were waiting anxiously at home. After a
long time, he rushed home and told us that Jimmy was sick and had no firewood left.

from either side. However, the old man was unresponsive, but not unconscious. As the men made their way towards
the seawall that stretched for blocks in each direction, Frank had an awful realization: With the water flowing a
good eight feet below the lip of the wall and no ladder or dock in sight, there was no way out of the river. ”A rescue
boat is on its way, “ someone yelled to them. The old man, who was six foot two and weighed around 260 pounds,
was deadweight in his rescuers’ arms, which meant they could only use their legs to save themselves. They were
almost out of energy at that point.

she’s still very young. ” “But her legs aren’t very long, and one eye is smaller than the other,”Ike added, trying to
make sense of why Rosy was different from other puppies he’d met.I looked across the room to where Rosy sat between the boys. The last golden rays of autumn sunshine shone
brightly on her face. Sure enough, one eye was misshapen. Not only that, it didn’t glint (闪光) in the afternoon
light. I drew in a breath. Rosy, our puppy with a name as short as her four little legs, was blind in one eye.
