Tips to get picky eaters eating out of your hands
There’s nothing more disappointing than putting time and thought into a delicious dinner for
your family, then having a certain picky eater turn their nose up at it and refuse to eat it.We’ve
all been there. But what is the solution? Here comes good advice. 1
Try something new.
2 For example,if spaghetti is a favourite, try making a simple switch from beef
mince(肉末) to pork mince to introduce new flavours carefully.
Prepare easy meals.
Take the pressure off mid-week meals by planning and preparing meals ahead of time or using
your slow cooker. 3 Simply pop a boneless pork shoulder in your slow cooker in the morning
with some spices and you’ll have a mouth-watering recipe base that can be transformed into a
range of delicious dishes.
4
Making your children take part in prepping, cooking and even serving dinner is a great way
to get them excited about trying new foods.Make Tuesday taco(墨西哥玉米卷) night a tradition
and let the kids prepare the ingredients, set the table, and build their own tacos.
Keep it simple.
Most kids prefer plain and simple dishes,so don’t overdo it on spices, exotic ingredients
or unfamiliar textures. 5 A subtle twist on classic dish, like substituting beef mince for pulled
pork when making shepherd’s pies is an easy way to add variety to your mid-week meals.
By carrying out these strategies, families can create a more enjoyable dinner experience and
encourage picky eaters to be more open to trying new foods.
A.Get the kids involved.
B.Ask the kids to have meals together.
C.Pulled pork is an easy and multipurpose dinner.
D.Attempt to make small changes to familiar dishes.

Stanford researchers have found that students from middle school to college are struggling to
assess the credibility of the online articles. Here are a few practices recommended by the
researchers.
1 Established news organizations usually have standard addresses that you are probably
familiar with.So addresses with such strange endings like “www.xxcom.com” should put you on
guard. 2 This is necessary even when the pages on the websites look familiar and professional.
Look at the quotes in a story.Or rather, look at the lack of quotes. Most reliable publicationsquote multiple sources who are professionals in the fields they talk about. 3
Search for the images in the story.Pictures should be accurate in illustrating what the story is
about. However, this often doesn’t happen. If people who write the news story don’t even leave
their homes or interview anyone for the story,it’s unlikely that they take their own pictures. 4
You can do this by right-clicking on the images and choosing to search for them.If the pictures
appear in a lot of stories about many different topics, there’s a good chance that the story is
unreliable.
Stop the spreading of misinformation. If you see your friends sharing obviously unreliable
information, kindly tell them it’s not real. 5 Everyone should help fix the misinformation
problem.
A.Check your articles.
B.Pay attention to the spelling of the website address.
C.Then you need to dig around more to see if they can be trusted.
D.If you do these steps, you’re helping yourself and the publisher.
E.Do a little detective work and search for the photos in a search engine.
F.If it’s a serious issue, they are usually supported by more reliable sources.
G.Don’t shy away from these warnings even if they might be uncomfortable.
1.答案 B
解析 空处位于句首,根据上文“Here are a few practices...”
So addresses with such strange endings like ‘www.xxcom.com’ should put
you on guard.”以及下文“This is necessary even when the pages on the websites look familiar
and professional.” This
Look at the quotes in a story.Or rather,
look at the lack of quotes. Most reliable publications quote multiple sources who are professionals
in the fields they talk about.”
4.答案 E
解析 根据本段主题句“Search for the images in the story.”及空后“You can do this by right-clicking on the images and choosing to search for them.”
中的search for the photos对应下文中的search for them。

How to practise emotional awareness?
What is emotional awareness? Emotional awareness is being able to identify and make sense
of not only our own emotions but those of others. It’s absolutely essential in understanding our
behaviors and changing our way of dealing with the problems. With emotional awareness,we can
understand how this influences our behaviors. 1
Of course, describing exactly how we feel can often prove difficult. 2 It’s not always
easy to put a finger on exactly what’s wrong, without digging a little deeper. This is often
because on some level we don’t want to know how we really feel.
3 They include unhealthy thoughts, behaviors and coping mechanisms that are hidden
from our view.Perhaps you lash out(猛击) or withdraw when you feel overwhelmed or go into a
flood of criticism and self-doubt when you receive negative feedback.
Mindfulness is the process of bringing our attention to the present moment and becoming
more aware of our thoughts. It’s a state of calm,non-judgmental reflection. 4 We can quiet
the mental chatter that often accompanies difficult emotions and instead sit with the physical
sensation of the emotion in our body.Doing this regularly allows us to be more aware of the source
of our emotions and enables us to carry out strategies to manage them more effectively.
Self-reflection develops emotional awareness and is key to understanding why you feel the
way you do.Activities such as journaling can be really beneficial in learning about your thought
processes. 5 It can be difficult to feel heard by others if we don’t have the language to
describe how we’re feeling.
A.And in turn, change the way we respond to challenging situations.
B.Without emotional awareness,we may develop emotional blind spots.
C.It’s the very reason we turn to general phrases like “I’m not myself today”.
D.Sometimes what we really struggle with is putting our emotions into words.
E.There are many ways to be mindful, from practising breath work to sitting in silence.
F.And for many of us,that means understanding how we feel and why it can be incrediblydifficult.
G.Research shows that being aware of your emotions is hugely beneficial to social and emotional
functioning.
1.答案 A
Emotional awareness is...It’s absolutely essential in...With emotional
awareness,we can understand how this influences our behaviors.”
故选A。
2.答案 C
解析 根据前文“Of course, describing exactly how we feel can often prove difficult.”

They include unhealthy thoughts, behaviors and coping
mechanisms that are hidden from our view.”
they指代B选
项中的emotional blind spots。故选B。
Mindfulness is the process of bringing our attention to the present moment and
becoming more aware of our thoughts. It’s a state of calm,non-judgmental reflection.”
It can be difficult to feel heard by others if we don’t have the language to
describe how we’re feeling.”

Good gift giving is an art.The perfect present can lift a mood or improve a relationship. 1So are there any rules to follow? Read on for 4 essential tips.
Don’t add a small gift to a big gift.
Want to add a tie to an expensive shirt? Some flowers to go with a bottle of grand wine?
Don’t.When we receive several gifts together,we tend to average out their value. 2
Gift experiences rather than things.
A new smartphone becomes old fast. 3 Often more thought has gone into experiences,
and they create more vivid memories. That is why you should consider an experience over a
physical object while gifting.
Gift cards are not bad.
Gift giving can be wasteful. We only spend $10 on ourselves if we find something that we
expect is worth more than $10 to us.But gift is different ,because we’re not buying for
ourselves. So we can spend $10 on something that’s worth less than $10 to the receiver. 4 Gift
cards have become much more popular over time. And they’re also very popular with receivers—a
better option than a rushed or poorly chosen gift that goes straight to the garbage can.
5
Let’s put it very simply:buy things that your receiver would buy for themselves. That might
seem obvious, but it happens far less than we’d like.People tend to use gifts to signal something
about themselves rather than providing utility(实用) or happiness to the receiver. The best way to
get it right is to simply ask the question—“What would you like?”
A.Think like the receiver.
B.It could even be worth nothing to them.
C.Use gifts to signal something about yourself.
D.But having the same experience strengthens bonds.
E.Therefore,a small gift added to a big one will hurt the big one’s impact.
F.Whatever the occasion, gift giving requires careful thought and consideration.
G.But a dream vacation or seeing your favorite artist will give you memories that last forever.
1.答案 F
解析 下文“So are there any rules to follow? Read on for 4 essential tips.”
2.答案 E
解析 本段小标题“Don’t add a small gift to a big gift.”
3.答案 G解析 本段小标题“Gift experiences rather than things.”
物,而不要送实物,上文“A new smartphone becomes old fast.”
4.答案 B
解析 上文“So we can spend $10 on something that’s worth less than $10 to the receiver.”
5.答案 A
Let’s put it very simply:buy
things that your receiver would buy for themselves.”
故选A。

From delays to strikes, trains aren’t always the smoothest way to travel. 1 Just a few
months ago, they went up on average by 4.9% in England.Fortunately, there are ways to bring
down the cost of your ticket.
First up,think about how you book your tickets. Some third party sites will charge you for
most bookings. 2 Some official booking sites and apps have loyalty programs, such as LNER
which offers 2% back on journeys on its routes.Uber also sells train tickets and until the end of
June it offers 10% back in credits.
3 With most rail operators, the earlier you book your ticket, the cheaper it’s going to
be.You’ll usually be able to pick up advance fares 12 weeks before you travel, and prices
gradually rise the closer you get to your departure date. Some routes will have advance prices up
until the day before and even on the day.
A split ticket shouldn’t work,but it can.Don’t buy a direct ticket from A to B. 4 At
its most basic, you’ll go from A to C,then from C to B,though it could easily be a longer
chain. It works best on long journeys.
If you’re regularly travelling on the same route most days, then a season ticket will save
you money.Of course that will involve a larger upfront cost,so it’s worth seeing if you can get
an interest-free loan from your employer for this which you’ll pay back via your salary. 5 Just
make sure with the latter that you pay at least the minimum amount each month and that you clear
the full balance before the year is out.
A.They’re also not that cheap.
B.Booking in advance also helps.
C.They are not as fast and convenient as planes, either.
D.However, with careful calculations, you have a lot to gain.
E.Instead, buy multiple tickets that break the journey up,and pay less.
F.But if instead you go direct with a rail company, you can avoid this.
G.If not,you can try a zero-percent interest purchase credit card which will do the same thing.
1.答案 A
解析 由下文“Just a few months ago, they went up on average by 4.9% in England.” A项“They’re also not that cheap.”
中not that cheap与下文中“went up on average by 4.9%”对应。故选A。
2.答案 F
解析 由上文“Some third party sites will charge you for most bookings.”
F项“But
if instead you go direct with a rail company, you can avoid this.”
With most rail operators, the earlier you book your ticket, the cheaper it’s
going to be...Some routes will have advance prices up until the day before and even on the day.”
4.答案 E
解析 由上文“Don’t buy a ticket from A to B.”和下文“At its most basic, you’ll go
from A to C,then from C to B,though it could easily be a longer chain. It works best on long
journeys.”可知,这里建议分段买票,E 项“Instead, buy multiple tickets that break the
journey up,and pay less.”
If you’re regularly travelling on the same route most days, then a season ticket
will save you money.Of course that will involve a larger upfront cost,so it’s worth seeing if you
can get an interest-free loan from your employer for this which you’ll pay back via your salary.”
可知,上文提出了一个如何买季票的方案,由下文“Just make sure with the latter...”可知,
空处说明如果第一个方案不可行,就要用另外的方法,G项“If not,you can try a zero-
percent interest purchase credit card which will do the same thing.”
G。

Art Appreciation
Art appreciation is an often overlooked skill. It’s more than simply looking at a piece of art
and judging it based on what we see.It requires us to look deeper, beyond the surface into the
artist’s intention. 1 The following tips would help you achieve it.
The first step is to prepare yourself mentally. Before you begin viewing any artwork, take
moments to clear your mind of what a piece you think should look like. 2 That’s because an
artist can present a unique visual experience by combining line, shape, form, color and spacecreatively.
Besides, examine the artwork closely.Take note of its elements mentioned above.Consider
how these elements work together to convey meaning or emotion in the piece.Notice how the work
makes you feel. 3 What can I see? What is the artwork saying? What feelings does it arouse in
me?
4 Information about the artist and when the artwork was created can help you uncover the
deeper symbolism present in the work that may not be immediately evident.Art is often used as a
tool for social change. To appreciate art,it’s important to understand the context where it was
created. The context behind a piece can be found through research and analysis.
Last but not least, sharing opinions on art also helps.Try discussing your thoughts on artwork
with friends or family who may have different opinions.Taking the diverse understandings into
consideration, you can approach viewing artwork from different viewpoints. As a result, you can
gain a new appreciation every time you look at it. 5
A.Relevant research counts as well.
B.Engage all your senses and ask yourself questions.
C.The process can bring you a fun and educational trip.
D.Leave your feelings aside and check out the questions.
E.To sum up,communication can also do good to your art appreciation.
F.With the previous ideas, you can get well prepared for the appreciation.
G.This will help you open up to different perspectives when exploring the work.
following...achieve it.”
fun and educational trip。故选C。
Before you begin viewing any artwork, take moments to clear your mind of
what a piece you think should look like.”和下文“That’s because an artist can...creatively.”
3.答案 B
解析 根据上文“Notice how the work makes you feel.”和下文“What can I see? What is the
artwork saying? What feelings does it arouse in me?”
Information about the artist and when the artwork was created can help you...To appreciate
art,it’s important to understand the context where it was created...”
的besides,last but no least同为衔接词。故选A。
Last but not least, sharing opinions on art also helps...As a result, you can
gain a new appreciation every time you look at it.”

Many people want to grow their own plants in their own backyard, but they don’t know
how to start. This article will teach you how to start!
Find out what plants to get.Get plants that can grow in your area, and make sure you plant
them at the right time of the year. 1 Usually you should start your garden after the last frost
date in the spring time. While they’re technically fruits , a good starter plant to grow is
tomatoes. You can plant these in a pot or in your garden.

When you look at yourself in the mirror,do you focus on something you wish were
different, and hear a critical inside voice? 1 But if you are ready to be kind to yourself and
willing to send that negative voice away forever, how do you begin? There are three steps to
overcome our “negativity bias(负面偏见)”.
·Start with mindful awareness.Being aware of how you are treating yourself is really the first step. 2 Use your actual
name as you describe what you are doing, seeing, and feeling.
Then, instead of criticizing yourself,be curious about what you did and the reasons behind
it.Remind yourself that you are doing the best with what you have. And pay your attention to the
positive side of the situation.
· 3
We all are worthy of love and we need to show loving kindness to ourselves. That might seem
awkward at first, but with a little practice, the process will become easier.Soon the positive
feeling you receive from self-kindness will provide you with a sense of happiness.
One of the best practices to build up your self-kindness is called “Note to a Dear Friend”.
When you are facing a challenge or difficulty, write a note to a friend as if they were facing the
same problem. 4 Then, take the note and change your friend’s name to your own.
·Recognize that you aren’t alone.
Not one of us lives a perfect life.Everyone faces challenges and makes mistakes. 5
First, you get a little bit less lonely. You are not the only person suffering, and knowing that takes
a weight off your shoulders.Second,it becomes a little easier to open up to others, and say,“I
need help.” We don’t have to pretend that everything is great when it isn’t.It’s OK to take off
our masks and let people know exactly how we feel!
A.Practice kindness.
B.Show others kindness.
C.It is important to face them.
D.Simply name your feeling and inside voice.
E.Write down what you think would help your friend.
F.When we recognize that, valuable things will happen.
G.If so,you may have the tendency to criticize yourself.
When you look at yourself in the mirror,do you focus on something you wish were
different,and hear a critical inside voice?”
“But if you are ready to be kind to yourself and willing to send that negative voice away forever,
how do you begin? There are three steps to...”
2.答案 D
解析 前文“Being aware of how you are treating yourself is really the first step.”
起句,后文“Use your actual name as you describe what you are doing, seeing, and feeling.”
3.答案 A
We all are worthy of love and we
need to show loving kindness to ourselves.”和“One of the best practices to build up your self-
kindness is called ‘Note to a Dear Friend’.”
故选A。
When you are facing a challenge or difficulty, write a note to a friend as if they
were facing the same problem.”提出怎样实施“Note to a Dear Friend”这个方法。
Not one of us lives a perfect life.Everyone faces challenges and makes mistakes.”
