My name is Yoon, a girl who came here from Korea, a country far away. Soon after we settled in
America, it was time to celebrate my birthday. I was hoping for a very special present—a jump rope. I
watched the girls in my school yard turning such a rope and jumping and singing happy songs. I wanted so
much to jump and sing with them, the ponytail girl, the golden-hair girl and the freckle boy. But I was still the
new girl.
On my birthday, my mother handed me a lovely box, inside which was a pale green bracelet. “A jade
bracelet, Yoon. My own mother gave me this very bracelet. Now I am giving it to you. A precious gem for a
precious daughter.” my mother said. “Look, Yoon, here is your Korean name inside.” She showed me the
dancing symbols that meant Shining Wisdom. I tried to contain my disappointment, I liked the bracelet, but
my heart still longed for a jump rope.
At lunch time the next day at school, an older girl from another class sat down beside me. “You are
wearing such a pretty bracelet, and you are alone today. I will be your friend. Would you like to play jump
rope with me?” But the only thing that she asked me to do was to turn around the rope until I grew tired.
“When will I jump?” I asked. “Tomorrow.” the older girl said. The bell rang, and she took the rope from me.
“I really like your bracelet,” she said. In America, friends share things, so you should let me wear it.” My
birthday bracelet? No, no, I shook my head. But quickly the older girl grabbed the bracelet from me and
twisted it onto her own wrist.
The next morning I waited in the school yard for the older girl who was still wearing my jade bracelet. I
asked her to give it back to me, but she refused. “Stop bothering me! Don’t be a pest!” she pushed me away
and laughed.
Paragraph 1:

Paragraph1:
Back in my classroom, I laid my head on my desk. All morning my heart was heavy with worry. What
if I could never get the bracelet back? The disappointment of my mother couldn’t bear thinking about. Dismayed
and hurt, I blamed myself for not spotting a fake friend. However, having collected myself, I resolved that I should
not give way to despair. Gathering up all my courage, I went to seek help from the teacher. It was the first time I
had stood up for myself, confronting the older girl about my ownership of the bracelet.
Paragraph 2:
As we argued in our teacher’s presence, other children in my class gathered around us.“It is
Yoon’s bracelet.” “She wore it yesterday” “We can prove that.” Loud shouts of support took me by surprise and
wrapped me around with warmth. Only then did I realize that my classmates, instead of ignoring me, actually cared
about me. “Tell us the inside of this bracelet,” the freckled boy turned to me and suggested with confidence. That
was how I recovered the precious bracelet. And that was how I got invited to skip rope with my true friend.

“Make sure you bring your schoolwork home,” Mother had told Shawn on Friday. Shawn had
资料整理【淘宝店铺:向阳百分百】known what that meant. The ice on the river was no longer safe for his snowmobile, and it would be
many weeks before the ice melted enough to cross the river by boat. Shawn was thinking that if he
couldn't go to school, maybe he could drive his snowmobile into the mountains.
Suddenly, Mother grasped her side with both hands, her face pale. Shawn hurried toward her.
“My stomach...” she moaned (呻吟).
Shawn helped Mother sit on the floor. Before he could reach the telephone to call for the
ambulance or the hovercraft—the fire department’s ice-rescue vehicle—he remembered that last
week’s ice storm had cut off the phone lines.
“I’ll get you to the hospital, Mother,” Shawn whispered. “Don't worry.” But Shawn was worried.
How could he get her to the hospital? The snowmobile wasn't safe. Suddenly, an idea struck him—
maybe he could use the boat.
“We can’t cross the river, Shawn, “his mother whispered.” The ice is too thin.” But she still let
him help her into the boat. Then he remembered that Father always brought a chisel (凿子) and a
sledgehammer (长柄大锤) on the ice in the winter. So he found them and placed them next to his
mother.
Cautiously, Shawn pushed the boat onto the ice. The boat slid more easily than he had expected
on the water-covered ice. Shawn pushed and pushed, though his arms soon ached and his legs were
sore. He wasn't far from the other side of the river, when he noticed two men drilling a fishing hole
next to the shore. Just then, with a loud crack, the front part of the boat broke through the ice. Shawn
took a quick step away from the boat, his arms shaking with tiredness.
The men were shouting at Shawn, waving a mobile phone, but the wind blew their words away.
Shawn was very nervous. Then he remembered—the chisel! He could use it as a lever (杠杆). Shawn
reached for the chisel. His mother passed him the chisel and the sledgehammer.
Paragraph 1:
Working quickly, Shawn soon had the chisel firmly hammered into the ice.
Paragraph 2:
Shawn stared at the white walls of the hospital waiting room.

Paragraph1:
Working quickly, Shawn soon had the chisel firmly hammered into the ice. Using the chisel as a
lever, he tried to lift the boat. The boat moved halfway up the ice-edge, then, to Shawn’s disappointment,
slipped back into the hole. “No,” he thought, “I'm not giving up.” He pulled against the chisel as hard as he
could until the boat moved onto the thin ice. A sound of applause from shore reminded Shawn of the men.
And Shawn was happy to see an ambulance near the shore. Shawn's mother was sent to the nearest hospital.
Paragraph2:
Shawn stared at the white walls of the hospital waiting room.Shawn stared at the white walls of
the hospital waiting room. After some hours, a man came in and sat next to him. Shawn realized that he was
the doctor from the ambulance. “Your mother is fine.” He said, smiling. “I heard about your trip across the ice.
Your mother was lucky that you were there to help her.” “Thank you,” Shawn said. He could hardly think. He
was too tired and every muscle in his body ached, but he still smiled when he thought of his mother.
