A
Yesterday, I read a report on fruit-picking robots. As I heard about the pricey robotic arms of these machines, I
was filled with something like sadness. Our children and grandchildren, I’m afraid, will not be able to understand
how our food is grown. Nor will they be able to experience the fun of fruit-picking.
I once spent a few weeks on a farm in New Zealand. There, I met about 50 apple-pickers from Vanuatu. At
night, we listened to pop music and washed our clothes as they told me about their experiences of picking
pineapples and peaches. Life on the farm was hard. The rooms were small and dark. There was nothing in them but
a kettle(水壶) and a shower. However, the trip left me with many fond memories.
When my son was little, I used to cycle him half an hour out of town to a farm every few weeks. There, we
could pick strawberries. He loved it. He was excited about the smell of the plants, the feel of the soil and the art of
guessing which piece of fruit had the potential to be the most delicious. And he saw where our fruit came from. I
wanted him to understand the effort and energy during the process of producing food.
Doorstep deliveries and washed and sliced(切好的) salad vegetables have already started to destroy our
understanding of how our food is grown and what it looks like. Robotic fruit-pickers, I fear, will be just another
step in this direction. I’m afraid that we are making the whole act of eating a hands-off experience. Where is, then,
the fun of it?
26.What is the report in Paragraph 1 about?
A.Robots used to pick fruit. B.The fun of growing food.
C.The cost of making robots. D.Children working on a farm.
27.How did the writer feel about the trip in New Zealand?
A.Terrible. B.Unforgettable. C.Regretful. D.Disappointed.
28.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Cutting fruit. B.Smelling the soil.
C.Cycling in the town. D.Picking strawberries.
29.What is the structure of the passage?
A. B.C. D.

In recent years, it has become popular for women to wear a traditional qipao dress. Especially during the
“gaokao”, many mothers wear qipaos to wish their children good luck in the exam. The reason is that “qipao”
stands for the Chinese meaning “qi kai de sheng”, which means “victory”.
The qipao has a high collar (衣领), with pankous, traditional Chinese knotted buttons, on the front. Some
people believe the qipao originated (起源) from gowns (长袍) in the Qing Dynasty. Influenced by western culture,
it changed continually during the early 20th century, becoming more fitted and body-hugging.
After years of development, the qipao is now mainly divided into Beijing styles, Shanghai styles and Hong
Kong styles. ▲
The Beijing style qipao is more traditional than Shanghai-style and Hong Kong-style qipaos. The colors of
Beijing-style qipaos are much brighter. High-quality Beijing-style qipaos are usually made by hand, so the price is
much higher.
Compared with Beijing-style qipaos. Shanghai-style ones are more fashionable. More western elements (元素)
are used in the designs and colors. Shanghai-style qipaos became the most popular style because of the fashionable
design and slim shape. Now, Shanghai-style qipaos are still the first choice for most women, especially among
younger ones.
Hong Kong-style qipaos have been influenced greatly by European fashions. They have shorter sleeves (袖子)
than the other two. The decorations are simpler, too.
The qipao is a very classic product to stand for the beauty of traditional Chinese clothing. It shows not only the
history of the Han people, but also the footprints of other cultures on the land.
30.Many mothers wear qipaos during the exam to ______.
A.develop traditional culture
B.make their children relaxed
C.celebrate their children's victory
D.express good wishes to their children
31.In Para. 2, all the followings are mentioned EXCEPT ______.
A.who buys the qipao B.what the qipao looks like
C.how the qipao changed D.what the qipao originated from32.Which sentence can be put in the missing pat “ ▲” in Para. 3?
A.They are also different in price.
B.They influence each other in development.
C.Different styles have their own buying groups.
D.There are many differences in color and design.
33.The writer wrote the passage to ______.
A.introduce different kinds of qipaos in China
B.show us that the qipao is popular all over the world
C.teach us how to make beautiful qupaos by ourselves
D.tell us the history, development, style and culture of the qipao

Sending astronauts to Mars is a big challenge. Astronauts will have to take everything they need, including
food, air and water. The room inside the spaceship is too limited to hold many things. So packing a spaceship is a
huge challenge for a trip to Mars.
Six astronauts on an eight-month trip to Mars will need at least 18,000 kilograms of water for drinking and
washing. They’ll also need water to protect themselves from space rays which can pass right through spaceship
walls and harm astronauts’ living cells. But a layer of water placed around the ship can stop the harm.
That’s a lot of water. And sending water into space is too expensive. It costs $33,000 to send one cup of water
to Mars. The more you take, the more it costs. We have the technology to get to Mars, but the problem is that it’s
too expensive.
But Flynn, an engineer at NASA, thinks he has a way of solving the problem. Instead of building a heavy
spaceship and packing it full of stuff (物料), why not use the stuff as part of the spaceship?
Imagine a spaceship that blows up like a balloon. Inside, the walls have pockets like a big honeycomb (蜂巢).
These hold lots of plastic bags filled with water, dried food and algae (水藻). All these make hard walls and great
radiation (辐射) protection. And stopping radiation doesn’t influence the food or water itself—it’s safe to eat and
drink. And what if the same water could be reused again and again? Flynn and his team call their packed-pocket
idea Water Walls.
Making oxygen and taking away CO —the waste gas you breathe out—is another problem in space. “Water
2
Walls will take away CO the same way it’s done here on our Earth—with living plants,” Flynn says. Living plants
2
take in CO to make their food, and give off oxygen. “Plants are hard to grow in a spacecraft, so we use algae,” he
2
says.
Algae are tiny plants that live in water. The algae will live in bags in the walls too, fed by human waste and
sunlight, eating up CO and making oxygen for the astronauts to breathe.
2
Flynn thinks his onboard recycling system has many advantages. He hopes it will help make flying to Mars a
reality very soon.
34.What does the underlined phrase “packing a spaceship” in paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A.repairing things in a spaceship B.recycling things in a spaceshipC.checking things in a spaceship D.putting things into a spaceship
35.What is the advantage of Flynn’s system?
A.Cost is saved. B.Travelling time is saved.
C.Plastic bags are saved. D.Food is saved.
36.What is one purpose of Flynn’s idea of Water Walls?
A.To prevent space rays during the space trip. B.To make the whole spaceship stronger.
C.To control the temperature in the spaceship. D.To produce water in the spaceship.
37.Why are algae put in the plastic bags?
A.To prevent water from being polluted. B.To serve as food for astronauts.
C.To provide oxygen for astronauts. D.To help other plants grow in a spaceship.

Do you often drink fruit juice and think it is good for your health? 41 This is mainly because these
drinks have a lot of sugar.
According to scientists, drinking too much fruit juice is just like drinking too much soda (汽水) — they both
have a lot of sugar. Taking in too much sugar can cause many health problems. Some people might say there are
also vitamins (维生素) in fruit juice. 42
In the study, “sugary drinks” were defined (定义) to include both sugar-sweetened (添加糖的) drinks like
soda and 100-percent natural fruit juice. Scientists found that if people get 10 percent or more of their energy from
sugary drinks every day, they will be 44 percent more likely to die from heart disease (疾病). 43
As Jean Welsh, one of the researchers in the study, told CNN, “Sugary drinks, whether soft drinks or fruit
juice, should be limited (限制). 44 In this way, fewer people will buy sugary drinks because of their
higher prices.
But how much is acceptable? Here are the suggestions from scientists. 45 Adults and children older
than 6 should not drink more than 230ml every day.
A.Also, they are 14 percent more likely to die from other diseases.
B.That is why some cities in the US have increased prices of sugary drinks.
C.However, a recent study shows that drinking too much juice may cause early death.
D.Kids between 1 and 6 years old should drink less than 170ml of fruit juice every day.
E.But the amount is too small to make up for the harm that these drinks do.
