Thousands of people died under bricks (砖块) of the damaged (毁坏的) buildings during the recent earthquakes. Is there a way to build earthquake-proof (抗震) buildings? Engineers have some life-saving ideas. “Lift” the house up To prevent earthquake waves from going through the building, one way is to “lift” the building’s foundation above the ground. The building can be built on top of pads (垫状物), which are usually made up of steel and rubber. During earthquakes, only the pads move and the building stays steady (平稳的). This can reduce the strength of earthquake waves by 13 to 15 percent, according to the website Bethinking the Future. Right materials Earthquake-proof materials must be easy to bend (弯曲) without breaking. Some of these materials include steel, wood and bamboo. In Japan, most traditional houses are built with wood. During earthquakes, woodenbuildings bend to avoid building up stress. Steel is one of the main materials of modern tall buildings because it can increase their ductility (延展性). Dome house A Japanese company has made dome-shaped houses with styrofoam. Styrofoam is a very light material. The whole house weighs only 80 kilograms. So when earthquakes happen, the house will not hurt people. Besides, there are many other good ideas on building earthquake-proof buildings. For example, a company in America is developing magnetic field (磁场) technology that can raise houses above ground when earthquakes happen. We hope these ideas can be put in action and more people’s lives can be saved. 根据材料内容选择最佳答案。 21.How does the writer lead into the passage in Paragraph 1? A.By telling a joke. B.By using a saying. C.By asking a question. D.By making a survey. 22.What are “earthquake-proof buildings” like? A.They can sound a warning when earthquakes happen. B.They are strong enough to stand earthquakes. C.They can be easily damaged in earthquakes. D.They are all built with wood instead of bricks. 23.Why can the pads help buildings stay steady in an earthquake? A.Because they can stop the ground movement. B.Because they can lift up buildings far from the ground. C.Because they can reduce the strength of earthquake waves. D.Because they can make the buildings’foundations hold onto the ground. 24.What do we know about Japan’s traditional houses? A.Bamboo is the most common material used for the houses. B.Most are hard to bend thanks to the use of steel. C.Most are built with wood which is easy to bend without breaking. D.They have great ductility because of the wide use of steel. 25.What is the advantage of using styrofoam in dome-shaped houses during earthquakes? A.It reduces the weight of the houses. B.It raises the houses above the ground. C.It increases the strength of the houses. D.It increases the ductility of the house. B Each of us has dreams and goals for our future. What makes us study and make progress each day is closely connected with our personal dream and goal. But why do you have dreams and goals, you still end up with nothing? What separates successful people from the dreamers is their persistent action. When you learn your lessons in school, you must work hard and not give up. You will often find some of your lessons very hard. Try and keep trying, and you’ll be sure to successfully dealwith any difficulty you meet with. If we have a hard lesson today, let us try our best to learn it well and then we shall be prepared for a harder one tomorrow. This is the famous formula (公式) for success: Dream > Believe > Achieve Most people have what they want (Dream) and think they can realize their dreams (Believe). And then they do nothing. They just imagine their dreams can come true. When they get tired of waiting and lose a lot, they get bored. They say angrily how terrible their life is. I personally believe that if you really want to achieve your dreams and goals in life, you have to add one thing to your success formula: Dream > Believe > Act > Achieve For me, act is the most important thing for success and that’s to Take Persistent Action (Act). If you say, “I can’t do it” and give up, you can never do anything valuable. However, “I’ll try” creates wonders. Let’s remember that there will be obstacles in our life. We must face them bravely and solve them. Success is not something that falls down from the sky. Most successful people made their dreams come true because of their persistent action. Please remember: Action is the bridge that connects our dreams and goals to reality. 26.What should you do when you find your lessons very hard? A.Ask people for help. B.Try and keep trying. C.Get ready to create wonders. D.Prepare for a harder one. 27.Which does the writer add to the famous formula? A.Act. B.Achieve. C.Connect. D.Create. 28.What does the underlined word “obstacles” mean? A.Dangers. B.Imaginations. C.Wonders. D.Bothers. 29.Why does the writer use the formula “Dream > Believe > Act > Achieve”? A.To support his idea. B.To ask readers to explain it. C.To show what his goals are. D.To compare it with a bridge. 30.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A.Doing Something Valuable B.Studying Hard and Making Progress C.Realizing Dreams with Persistent Action D.Separating Successful People from Dreams C How far will you go when strangers ask you for help? For Mr. Cheng, an old security guard at Hangzhou Dianzi University, the answer is 17 years and 100,000 yuan. One night in September 2005, a man and his kid got out of a taxi and came to Cheng. The father said that his kid was a freshman (大一新生) at the university and that 6,000 yuan they had was stolen. He asked if Cheng could help them by paying the taxi driver. “Of course,” Cheng replied. It was 68 yuan. Several days later, he heard some stories about the kid he had helped. The kid had worked hard to get into theuniversity. He was poor, and his parents had borrowed 6,000 yuan for his college education. However, since the money was gone, the kid would probably drop out. Cheng decided to help again. He wasn’t rich, but he paid 6,000 yuan for the kid’s education and didn’t tell it to anyone. Cheng also took out a few hundred yuan every month and sponsored (资助) the kid through college. In the following years, he also sponsored another five students, but these stories about him were never known by others until recently. The greatest thing about people like Cheng isn’t what they do or how much they have; it’s how much they want to help and how far they want to go although they don’t have much to give. 根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。 31.Which is the right order of the following facts? ① Cheng helped the father and his son pay the taxi driver. ② The parents borrowed money for their son’s college education. ③ Cheng sponsored the kid through his college study. A.②①③ B.①③② C.②③① D.③①② 32.Why did the father and his kid come to Cheng for help? A.Because they got lost. B.Because the kid had an accident. C.Because they had no money. D.Because they had a fight with the driver. 33.What does the underlined phrase “drop out” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A.miss the chance B.leave school C.refuse the help D.stop working 34.Which of the following words can best describe people like Cheng? A.Friendly and independent. B.Kind and creative. C.Old but responsible. D.Poor but warm-hearted. 35.What could be the best title of the passage? A.A Lucky Kid B.A Quiet Sponsor C.A Touching Experience D.A Sweet Memory D There are far too many mysteries in this world that we have yet to discover. Some of them are hidden in the most unlikely places. 3 6 In a small town of Gryfino in Poland lies one of the world’s mysteries that have been known—a small group of pine trees. 3 7 From the bottom, these trees grow with a 90-degree bend northwards, but then go back to grow straight up into the sky. According to the scientists, the pine trees there were planted around 1930. Though they are strange in shape, these trees are generally healthy. 3 8 Some even grow nearly 15.24 meters. That’s about the height of a five- story building. 3 9 Some suppose that the special gravity (重力) in this area has caused the trees to bend northwards. But it seems that this guess isn’t proper, because gravity only pulls things downwards and doesn’t make them bend. Others guess that the heavy snowfall in the area weighed down the trees as they were small. However, if that is the case, how would they explain that the other trees are the same in this area? The most possible explanation is that local farmers shaped the trees when planting them then. During those times, it was common for farmers to shape their plants for special purposes. 40 The secret behind the tree is still waiting for us to discover. 根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使文章意思通顺,内容完整。 A.Most of them are very tall. B.These trees look strange in shape. C.Others remain unsolved even up to this day. D.However, that is only one of the guesses from people.
