Little river ran down from a high mountain through many villages and forests. Then it reached a desert. “I
went through so many difficulties. I should have no problem crossing the desert,” she thought. As she started, she
found herself slowly disappearing into the sand. After many tries, she still failed.
“Maybe I can’t reach the ocean.” she said sadly to herself.
At this time, a deep voice said, “If a breeze (微风) can cross the desert, so can a river.” It was the voice of the
desert. But the little river answered, “That’s because a breeze can fly, but I cannot.”
“That’s because you can’t give up what you are. Let yourself evaporate (蒸发) into the breeze, and it can take
you across.” said the desert. “Give up what I am now? No! No!” The little river could not accept this idea. “The
breeze can carry the vapor (水蒸气) across the desert and let it leave as rain. The rain will form a river again,” said
the desert. “And whether you’re a river or vapor, your nature never changes.” Hearing this, the little river went into

Yan Hong is a 33-year-old traditional handicraft(手工艺品)designer from Chengdu. Several years ago, she
decided to give up her job at a hospital to do something that she truly loved to do. But at that time she didn’t expect
her handicrafts to become a hit in China and abroad.
Working for one’s dream requires double the effort. She usually begins to work at 9 a.m. It often doesn’t end
until 1 a.m. or even later. But she never regrets pursuing(追求)her dream. Because she is always working with
metal materials and sharp tools, Yan Hong’s fingers are often covered in small cuts. And she is often faced with
difficulties when trying to create handicrafts to match traditional clothing. One big problem is to find the materials
that can be used to recreate these classical fashions.
Today the young artist has become a master of handicrafts. Yan Hong is good at using recycled materials. No
matter how common the materials are, she is always able to create art from them. With her “magic hands”, she once
completed a set of headwear of the Miao ethnic(少数民族)group from 68 cans. Many of her artworks are
inspired by traditional Chinese culture. One of her most popular productions is based on Chinese classic text Shan
Hai Jing, also known as the Classic of Mountains and Seas.
These beautiful handicrafts have made Yan Hong popular in China. Meanwhile, her artworks have also found
a large number of fans around the world. In 2019, she was invited to give a speech at the University of Oxford in
the U.K. In 2022, she went to Milan Fashion Week at the invitation of foreign designers.
“It is a great honor for me to introduce traditional Chinese handicrafts to the world.” she said proudly.
However, she did not think her success was mainly because of her great craftsmanship(手艺), but thanks to our
“mother country’s big influence in the world.”
She thinks more people from other countries have started to be interested in Chinese culture as our country
becomes stronger. And she feels very thankful to live in such good times and have a chance to show our traditional
culture to the world.

You probably have noticed it: Chongqing’s population has been aging fast. According to China’s latest
national census (人口普查), up to 23.4 percent of the city’s residents (居民) are aged over 60. This number is
expected to grow even further in the coming years.
Chongqing is not alone. Many other cities around the world have been experiencing this same problem for
some time now. Some people are worried about this. The elderly, they say, do very little for the nation’s economy
(经济). The government, however, has to give them lots of retirement benefits (退休福利). But a recent survey
shows that many people agree there are some positives to having an aging population.
With an aging population, younger people will have more chances to meet seniors in their daily lives. With age
comes wisdom. Through usual communication, the elderly can bring a wealth of a useful life lessons to younger
people. The young, at the same time, are given chances to see things from a completely different perspective (视角).
Besides, in many cultures, it’s normal for elderly parents to live with their children under the same roof. Their
children may have already reached adulthood, but these gray-haired men and women continue to play an important
role in their development. In some families, the elderly are taking care of their grandchildren. It’s reported that half
of all the children in China’s cities live with their grandparents and are raised under their guidance. Thanks to this
free childcare, working parents can contribute more to the economy.
An aging population is often considered to be a headache. But perhaps it can be argued that there are also
some benefits to it.

六、任务型阅读(第65-67题每题2分,第68题3分,共9分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,完成下列各题。
There are some differences between American English and British English. Some differences are quite
interesting.
When my friend Lily from London used the word “larder”, I didn’t know what it meant. Realizing I didn’t
follow her, she used another word. I finally knew she wanted to find something to keep some food. The next word
came up when we were planning a lunch date. She jotted down the date and time in her diary, while I wrote it down
on my calendar. If she called me on the phone, she would ring me up. But if the line was busy, she would say the
line was engaged. She once told me a funny story about a pissed woman. I wondered what had made the lady angry.
It turns out that pissed means drunk.
Most times, I could understand what Lily meant until last week I read a message written from Lily to me. I
found out the British really like the letter“u”and have kept it in many words. However, we Americans have dropped
it. Somewhere in our language history, we decided that “neighbor”, “color” and “favorite” were just fine without
“u” next to the “o”.
Here is one more example. While I was in London for the first time last year, I lost my watch. When I asked
my British friend what time it was, he said aloud as “a quarter to seven”, which made me speechless and lost in
thought. After a few seconds, I finally realized it was “six forty-five”. Equally, 6:15 for us is translated as “six
fifteen”, while the British would say “a quarter past six”. Although the differences between American and British
English sometimes make me confused(困惑的), it’s really fun to explore more of them from my own
experience.
65.Is the writer an American according to the passage?
66.What does “larder” refer to(指代)?
67.What differences between American English and British English are mentioned in the passage?
68.As an English learner, do you think it’s necessary for you to learn the differences between American and
British English? Why or why not?

Have you ever tried ChatGPT, a smart AI chatbot(聊天机器人)tool? As it swept the education world last
month, artificial intelligence(AI)caused a heated discussion. In this article, we will explain the advantages and
disadvantages of AI to 74 you with a better understanding of this subject. So, let’s get started.
Avoiding mistakes.
Although nowadays people have much wisdom, they still make mistakes. It’s because 75 of us is
perfect. However, AI could serve us much better. Once algorithms(算法)are set up, computers will keep
performing the same task over and over again 76 making mistakes.
77 time.
This powerful tool allows you to use your time more effectively(高效地). Type in “A cat wants to go to
space” and ask ChatGPT to write a bedtime 78 . Just one second later, you’ll get the character called Max,
who tried his best to overcome difficulties and flew the rockets to the moon. Creating a story in this way greatly
saves time, or you would have to spend several hours finding a suitable one.
Inviting laziness in humans.
There were many inventions that were first introduced to help us, but we ended up 79 too much on
them. The same is true of AI. It stays 24/7 available, 24 hours and 7 days a week! It keeps serving you 80
it’s turned off by you. As computers become smarter, humans would like to turn to them when facing problems
instead of making full use of their own abilities.
Resulting in losing jobs.
With the increasing influence of AI, there is no doubt that finding a job will be much 81 . For example,
many people can use AI to translate(翻译)the information they need without the help of others. AI may not take
the place of humans, but it can certainly lead to more people losing jobs.
