Summer Reading Program
Welcome to Brown Summer Reading!
Brown High School has an independent reading program every summer. Our goals for independent
reading include knowing oneself as a reader, understanding how to find what one loves to read for fun, and
learning how to connect with others around books and reading. To that end, we offer you our summer
reading program. You can see the introductions to reading clubs on this website and click different links to
see more detailed information.
Every student must join at least one book club this summer.
Club 1: For students who like reading books in which famous people write about their own life.
Club 2: For students who like reading long written stories in which the characters and events are not
usually in real life.
Club 3: For students who like reading pieces of writing that express emotions, experiences, and ideas, especially in short lines using words that have the same last sound.
Club 4: For students who like reading news reports describing real events and people.
However, we strongly recommend that one of the books you choose be an “unlikely choice”. An
“unlikely choice” will be a type of book that you-wouldn't normally pick. This helps readers to walk outside
their comfort zones or usual selections.
To discover your “unlikely choice”, explore the Peer page in which your classmates will recommend
their favorite books and the Senior page in which teachers will pick their favorite books for students.
Parents/caregivers may want to explore the Staff page to learn more about how to support their children's
independent reading. If students want to get some advice on the choice of books from professional authors,
please click the Pro link for more information.

When I was a young boy, every summer, Mom, Dad, my brothers and I would climb into our old car
and drive for 7 hours over long mountain roads to visit Mom’s relatives (亲戚) in Tennessee. We always
stayed in Grandma’s house there with her, Uncle Rich and Aunt Charlotte. It was a fun time with days full of
excitement and joy. Often Aunt Charlotte would even make us a Thanksgiving dinner in the summertime.
Some of my happiest childhood memories came from those visits.
One especially holds a special place in my heart. During that visit, I had great fun every day. One
evening, I climbed into bed in the guest bedroom on the second floor of the house. Although I had played
and explored the whole day and was really tired, I was still wide awake, my mind racing with the day’s
sweet events. As I lay there, I heard the most pleasant sound coming from the front window below me. It
was laughter. Mom, Dad, Uncle Rich, and Aunt Charlotte were down there sharing stories and telling jokes.
The laughter was so happy, so joyous, that I found myself smiling. And even then in my young mind and
childish heart, I realized that this is how life should be. The laughter became a sweet song to me and I fell
asleep feeling all was right with the world.
Whenever my life seems too hard or crazy, I look back on that memory. And I took the lessons that
Uncle Rich and Aunt Charlotte taught me. They always lived their lives with love and joy and laughter and
smiles. Uncle Rich passed away many years ago but Aunt Charlotte is still alive. I write to her each week
and I am so thankful to still have her in my life.
We fill lives with laughter and smiles and love and joy. We not only give ourselves happiness but also
make this world a better and more beautiful place.

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after
school are more mentally healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine.
The study used information collected from more than 28,000 seventh-grade Canadian students between
2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including
how much time they spent watching TV or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had
taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students
to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that
I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级).
Researchers said in the study some of the results were expected. Students with no after-school activities
usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative
indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels
of anxiety compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school
activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of
students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time.
Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the
study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic
development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
28. Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study?
A. Talking about their lifestyles. B. Introducing their after-school activities.
C. Reporting their mental states on a scale. D. Answering questions about screen time use.
29. What do the researchers find about teenage girls?
A. They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B. Few of them take part in after-school activities.
C. Anxiety has become a serious problem among them.
D. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
30. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4?
A. Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B. High screen time is common among teenagers.
C. No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
31. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study?
A. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.B. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D. They allow teenagers to become better learners.

Researchers in Shanghai are developing a robot “guide dog” that could help blind people. The robot is
now being tested in Shanghai.
The machine uses cameras and sensors (传感器) to sense its environment. It is able to recognize (辨认
出) traffic lights which traditional guide dogs are unable to recognize. The robot can communicate by
listening to and speaking with a blind person. The robot also uses artificial intelligence (AI) to recognize
voices and plan ways to go from place to place.
The robot dog is about the size of an English bulldog but a little wider than a real dog. It has six legs
instead of four because the researchers say the extra legs enhance its safety, making its movements
smoother.
41-year-old Li Fei and 42-year-old Zhu Sibin are among the people with eye problems who are helping
the Jiao Tong University team. They are testing the dog using Chinese-language instructions and providing
their feedback (反馈) for the researchers to further develop the dog.
Li is completely blind while Zhu has little eyesight. Li normally uses a walking stick to walk. He said,
“If this robot guide dog comes onto the market and I could use it, at least it could solve some of my
problems in traveling alone.”
Robot guide dogs are also under development in Australia and Britain. But China needs a lot of
traditional guide dogs. There are just over 400 guide dogs in China for nearly 20 million blind people.
Many workplaces, restaurants and public areas do not welcome a usual guide dog like a Labrador. The
supply of real dogs is limited (限制) by feeding and training needs. The production of robot guide dogs
could be increased to an industrial level, especially in a center of making industry like China. The
researchers think there could be a large market for robot dogs as there might be tens of millions of people in
the world who need guide dogs.
32.What does the underlined word “enhance” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Report. B. Record. C. Show. D. Increase.
33.Why are Li Fei and Zhu Sibin mentioned in the text?
A. They prefer experiencing modern inventions.
B. They’re experts in developing robot guide dogs.
C. They play a part in improving robot guide dogs.
D. They depend on real guide dogs for traveling around.
34.What is the future of robot guide dogs like according to the researchers?
A.Worrying. B.Challenging. C.Uncertain. D.Hopeful.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The History of Guide Dogs in China.
B. The Differences Between Robot Dogs and Real Dogs.
C. A New Robot Guide Dog to Help the Blind.
D. The Future of Artificial Intelligence.

Learning a new language is more than a skill. It gives you an opportunity to understand other cultures.36 .
Choose a language
This is a personal decision. 37 If you enjoy studying Japanese history and culture, you may
want to add Japanese to the list. Perhaps you’re planning to vacation in Brazil and decide to learn Portuguese
before the trip. Maybe you live in an area with many Spanish speakers and believe being bilingual (双语的)
will increase your job opportunities.
38
This is important because you need to know which words to use to express yourself and understand
what you hear and see. According to the International Center for Language Studies, knowing between 4,000
and 10,000 words in a language typically makes you an advanced speaker.
Accept mistakes
Mistakes are a common part of the process when learning a language. You may choose the wrong
word, change vowel sounds, or use the present tense form of a verb when talking about something that
happened last week. When you make a mistake, pay attention to the advice you get. 3 9 .
Set aside time to practice
40 . According to the US Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute, a native English
speaker typically needs between 600 and 750 class hours to learn languages like Dutch, French, Italian, and
Spanish. You’ll spend around 900 class hours learning German, Haitian Creole, and Swahili. Sometimes you
need to learn languages with fewer features in common with English. Then you’d better put in at least 1,100
class hours.
A.Build your vocabulary.
B.Keep trying before setting a goal.
C.Focus on the 100 most commonly used words.
D.Try out these steps for how to learn a new language.
E.Learning a new language takes time and needs regular practice.
F.Your interests, needs, and goals can help you narrow your choices.
G.For example, the person you’re talking to may correct your grammar or vocabulary choice.

第二节 (共5题;每小题3分,满分15分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容,用完整的句子回答后面的问题。
George was so excited he could hardly wait to get to the store. He walked so fast that his sister Beth
had to run. “Do you have to hurry like that?” she puffed. On his way from school he had seen that baseball
cap in Rogers’ store window. Only a dollar and this was the last cap! George had looked at the cap a long
time. He wanted it more than anything. Every boy at school had one.
George thought of his piggy bank, into which he put every coin for running errands (差使) for his
family and neighbors.
George raced home, not stopping for anything. He held the fat iron pig, opened it carefully, and poured
out the coins. Ten...twenty...thirty...ninety cents. If only he had one more dime (一角硬币)!
Lost in thought, George stared out the window. “What’s wrong, George?” asked Mother George told
about the money and the cap. “If you give me what you have, I’ll add a dime,” Mother said, handing him a
dollar bill.
George jumped up. “Oh, thanks, Mom. That’s great!” George gave all his coins to Mother and took the
dollar bill. And away went George and Beth to the store with the dollar bill in George’s pocket.
They turned the last corner. Ahead was a group of boys and girls, talking heatedly and looking down at
the sidewalk.
One of the children was Ronny, a new boy who had been in this town only a short time. Ronny’s father
had been sick, so there wasn’t much money for extras—like baseball cap.
“What’s the matter?” Beth asked, anxiously.
“It’s Ronny,” answered one of them. “He’s been working and finally saved up a whole dollar, and now
it’s lost!”
George went over to Ronny.
“We’ll all help look. We’ll find it!”
“I was going to get that last cap in Rogers’ window. I wanted it a lot. With that cap, I could join them.”
Ronny said slowly.
Suddenly George remembered how Ronny had watched the fellows playing baseball, his eyes lighting
up eagerly as they shouted and ran.

M: Hello, everyone. Today I’m going to talk about small talk. That is short conversations people
often have with strangers they meet. Such exchanges occur at bus stops, on buses, while waiting in
line, almost anywhere that strangers gather close together. As a matter of fact, these short
conversations are a good way for people to say hello and express friendliness. Such conversations
usually cover a wide range of topics. The topics may include weather, customer service, movies,
TV shows, local sports or latest news. But you should always keep it in your mind that private
questions about incomes, family life and religious beliefs should be avoided during these
conversations. In addition, it’s better to ask open-ended questions. If you ask visitors, “Do you likeour city?”, they may say simply “Yes!” On the other hand, if you ask, “What do you think of our
city?”, they will have more freedom in answering. This type of question also shows that you’re
interested in them. If you appear interested in what people are saying, they feel more comfortable
talking with you.

Dear Jack,
I’m so glad to hear from you! In your letter you asked me about how to keep healthy. I’d like
to give you some advice.
As you know, we teenagers are going through a rapid growth and development which needs
to be supported by a healthy and balanced diet. In order to get enough energy and nutrients, we
need a variety of food, such as fish and meat, especially fresh vegetables and fruits. Besides, you
should take physical exercise regularly. For example, you can play basketball or take a walk after
school. What’s more, having enough sleep is of great importance. Only in this way can you keep
fit.
I hope you will find these suggestions helpful.
Yours,
Li Hua

The next morning, Devin went straight to the music room. “I am not the best singer and I have
to...” Devin hesitated with his eyes fixed on the floor. Ms. Poltis smiled warmly, "I choose you
because you work hard, like the person in the song. So don't be nervous!" Devin raised his head
and looked at her, tears welling up in his eyes. It was at that moment that Devin made his final
decision. Later that day, Devin went to his coach and teammates. Unexpectedly, they welcomed
him and promised that they would spare no effort to win the title.
On Thursday evening, Devin felt a little nervous to see so many people in the music hall.
Devin took a deep breath and stepped onto the stage. The bright light coming on, Devin calmed
down and sang with confidence. Devin handled the solo perfectly. Hardly had he finished the last
word of the song when a wave of applause erupted from the audience. Devin smiled at Ms. Poltis
and felt proud of the choice he had made. No matter how hard the struggle, you have to make a
decision and never let yourself down.
