An excerpt from Shoes Were for Sunday by Molly Weir
One of the phrases which greatly puzzled me was “entertaining angels unaware”. How could anybody be
unaware of entertaining an angel, I thought? It never occurred to me that angelic qualities could hide under very
ordinary voices and in everyday bodies.

My angel, as it turned out, hid inside the little figure of my school-teacher, Miss McKenzie. To me she was
always a little old lady, with her grey hair framing a round rosy face and caught up in an old-fashioned bun (发髻)
on top of her head.
Although I enjoyed Miss McKenzie’s approval, I never really felt very close to her. It never dawned on me to
ask her advice as to what I should do when I left school. Surely there was only one thing to do:get a job and earn
money as quickly as possible. But Miss McKenzie had other ideas. We in our house knew nothing of scholarships
for fatherless children. The idea of a child from a working-class household going to college was the very stuff of
story-books.
Unknown to us, she forced the headmaster to put my name forward for a special scholarship open to children
who showed some promise, and who would benefit from further education. He agreed, although he was a bit worried
about the expense of keeping me at college for a whole year. No earnings from me, and fares and clothes to be
covered, for, of course, only the fees would be paid if I won.
Miss McKenzie brushed all argument aside. To this day I can remember my complete astonishment when, on
being asked if she felt I had any particular qualities, this elderly teacher banged the desk with her fist, and declared
in an American idiom I never suspected she knew, ‘I’d stake my bottom dollar on this girl!’
I trembled at the passion in her voice, and at her faith in me. “What if I fail her?” I gasped to myself. “What if
she has to pay all the money back if I let her down?” I knew we hadn’t a spare dollar to repay anybody, and I was
sick with a sense of responsibility in case I messed up.
The time at college went by quickly. At the end of my year at college I was able to lay before her the college
gold medal as the year’s top student and a whole pile of certificates.
And suddenly as I gazed at her, and saw her eyes shining with pride behind the gold-rimmed glasses, I realized
how widely she had thrown open the door of opportunity for me. And I knew for the first time what the phrase
“entertaining angels unaware” meant. For there, standing before me in class, was my very own angel, Miss McKenzie.

The book mainly presents us with the American Indian leaders of the past. It features many profiles and biographies
including Sitting Bull, Red Cloud, Little Crow and Lozen Quanah etc. written by author Charles Eastman, and I’m
sure you will be interested in it.
Name: Sitting Bull
Birth: 1831
Death: 12-15-1890
He was a great hero and is respected by many American
Indians. In a 1997 documentary (纪录片) — The Great Tribes,
he was known as a holy man, a composer of songs and an artist.
Under him, the Sioux and Cheyenne Nations unified. He was
advised to go on a European tour in 1887, but he turned it down
to defend these two nations from being separated again. He led
his people during years of resistance to United States
government policies and was killed by Indian agency police on
the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.

In the early days of covid-19, the tech industry was consumed by a sense of excitement. With billions of people
locked down at home, work and play were shifting online. Many hoped that the new normal would spark a huge
productivity boom as firms digitized and workers spent less time commuting. The excitement was most evident in
stock-markets, where any firm related to this trend saw its share price surge. The tech-heavy NASDAQ rose by 88%.
The crazy has ended. Today the lockdown lunacy index(疯狂指数) — which includes Netflix, a streaming
service; Peloton, a maker of fancy exercise bikes; Robin-hood, a stock-trading app; Shopify, and e-commerce
platform; and Zoom, a videoconferencing firm - has fallen by more than 80% from its peak.
How worrying is this return to Earth? To be sure, some of it reflects gloomier prospects for the global economy.
And it is disappointing that two years of digitization and remote work have not provided clear evidence of a
productivity boom. Yet there are reasons still to be techno-optimistic. Much of the early enthusiasm may simply have
been focused on the wrong types of firm. Though the pandemic darlings have fizzled, the shift towards ever greater
digitization continues. The true winners are not the flashy consumer-tech firms, but the companies that provide the
infrastructure to enable this shift.
Look beyond the boom and bust of consumer tech, and you see the real successes. The market for the
infrastructure technology that underpins people’s daily lives, such as cloud computing, cyber-security and digital
payments, is booming. The cloud-computing industry is expected to grow to almost $500bn this year, up from $243bn
in 2019. Amazon’s cloud offering, the largest in the world, is still growing at 33% each year. It accounted for three-
quarters of the firm’s operating income over the past 12 months, and is propping up the tech giant’s ailing e-commerce
business. Its closest rivals are the cloud services of Microsoft and Google. Their annual sales are growing by 40%
and 36%, respectively.
Cloudification has created new demands for cybersecurity, another tech winner. The combined revenue at the
three largest listed cybersecurity firms has almost doubled since the start of the pandemic. Their market capitalisation
has tripled, and has come down only a fraction since the start of the year. Digital payments are another bright spot,
thanks to lockdowns and social distancing. Three-quarters of iPhone owners use Apply Pay, up from half in 2019,

and nine out of ten American retailers now accept it as a payment method. Almost 200m people in India and China
have used some form of digital payment for the first time since the onset of covid.
The bubble may have burst on the pandemic’s darlings, but the drumbeat of digitization continues. The less
obvious technologies that provide the underlying infrastructure for the shift are the true beneficiaries of covid.
Whether these will fuel a productivity boost one day remains to be seen. But there was more going on during the
pandemic than lockdown crazy.
48. According to the article, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Tech industry predicted a productivity boom in the lockdown, which proved true.
B. The share prices of customer-tech companies sharply rocketed and then declined.
C. Robinhood is a tech company specializaing in meeting demands for cybersecurity.
D. The prospects of the tech industry are too gloomy to be optimistic.
49. What does the underlined word “fizzled” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. emerged B. benefited C. failed D. sustained
50. What can be inferred from the last three paragraphs?
A. Digital payment wasn’t available to Indians at all until the start of covid.
B. In the past year, Amazon has mainly depended on its e-commerce business of profits.
C. In the shift of working online, cloudification is no longer optional!
D. The market capitalization of three largest listed cybersecurity firms has kept rising.
51. What is the best title of the article?
A. Techno-pessimists Rule the Lockdown.
B. The Lockdown Index Sounds the Alarm.
C. Economic Depression Is Arriving.
D. Tech Losers and Winners of the Pandemic.

Does solving a math problem give you a headache? Do you feel nervous when you sit a math exam? ____52____.
Scientists came to this conclusion with an in-depth experiment, which was published in the Public Library of
Science One journal. They began by finding out how much participants fear math, Those involved were asked a series
of questions such as how they feel when they receive a math textbook or when they walk into a math lesson.
Based en their answers, participants were divided into groups. One group was made up of people who were
particularly afraid of math and participants in the other group were more comfortable with the subject.
Both groups were then given either math tasks or word tasks. When a math task was going to come next, a
yellow circle would appear but when a word task was soon to come, a blue square would be shown. ____53____. It
was like the pain they would feel, for example, if they burnt their hand on a hot stove. But they reacted less strongly
when they knew that they would be faced with a word task.
However, scientists saw no strong brain response from people in the second group.
Math can be difficult, and for those with high levels of mathematics-anxiety (HMA), math is associated with
tension, apprehension and fear. “When you are really thinking about the math problems, your mind is racing and you
