‘Permacrisis’ — the 2022 Word of the Year
Over the last few years, it’s seemed like the “new normal” keeps getting weirder and darker as historical events
pile up. This month the Collins Dictionary acknowledged our apparent entry into ever darker timelines by naming
“permacrisis” its 2022 Word of the Year.
Collins defines the word as a(n) “____21____(extend) period of instability and insecurity, especially one
____22____(result) from a series of catastrophic events.”
You can pick from an existential mixture of catastrophic event____23____(justify) the use of the term, from the
COVID pandemic to Russia’s war on Ukraine to extreme weather worsened by climate change.
“Permacrisis is a term that perfectly embodies the dizzying sense of moving from one unprecedented event to
____24____, as we wonder sadly what new horrors might be around the corner,” David Shariatmadari said in a
“permacrisis” blog post for Collins on Nov. 1. “Much more of this ____25____ we might have forgotten what
stability and security ever felt like.”
The word isn’t brand new this year. A quick search____26____ find references at least as far back as the mid-

1990s, which makes sense as it’s a handy suitcase for any particularly stubborn situation.
“Permacrisis signals not only a loss of faith in progress, but also a new realism ____27____ relation to what
people can cope with and achieve,” Neil Turnbull, a Nottingham Trent University philosophy professor, writes on
the academia-focused site The Conversation. “Our crises ____28____(become) so complex and deep-seated that they
can go beyond our capacity to understand them. Any decision to tackle them risks only ____29____(make) things
worse.”
It turns out that some other words and phrases _____30_____ were chosen for this year’s honor are also tied to
the mounting sense of permacrisis, including “quiet quitting”, the oft-mispronounced Ukrainian capital Kyiv and
“vibe shift.” Here’s hoping the latter becomes more prominent real soon.

The Oral History of James Cameron
Sigourney Weaver didn’t want to star in a sequel to Alien. Then she read the screenplay. “Every single page was
my____31____, with all kinds of different levels of drama,” she says. “Everything about the script was so good and
powerful.”
It was a war movie in space. To the actress, the idea of Ellen Ripley fighting aliens alongside a unit of colonial
marines sounded great. There was only one problem: “First of all, I didn’t know there would be machine guns in it,”
she says. “And I had worked for gun ____32____ for a number of years. So I said, ‘I’m sorry, the gun thing, that’s
not going to work for me.”
Another director might have turned his back on Weaver. But not James Cameron.
He responded by taking her to a shooting____33____. After letting off a few bursts of gunfire, she began to see
the world through Cameron’s eyes. “Unfortunately, or ____34____, that experience gives you so much adrenaline
(肾上腺激素), and it’s a little bit transforming.” Weaver says. “I had to embrace the fact that I was with an army
unit and they were going to be using these guns. And at some point I would have to do that, too. Jim really wants his
actors to feel comfortable, and to feel ____35____. So he always had me try everything first.”
Aliens was a typical Cameron blockbuster: exciting, moving, futuristic, propelled by a heroine, and full of things
that audiences had never seen before. And, oh yeah: It was a box office ____36____ that won two Oscars and earned
seven nominations, including Weaver’s first.
This is the James Cameron way. He’s ____37____ the popcorn film every single time he’s made one, from The
Terminator to Titanic to Avatar. Each of his movies is more ambitious, more expensive, and more imaginative than
the last. He’s____38____outdone himself — and the rest of Hollywood. But while Cameron’s genius is unique, he
hasn’t made ____39____ alone. From his early days as a special effects assistant to ____40____ 3D filmmaking
again with ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, one thing has always been clear: working with James Cameron is a singular
experience.

My sister Debbie had a baby the other day. Her labor (分娩) went pretty well — nothing out of the ordinary. I
just can’t say the same for her ride to the hospital.
As a number of us from the family gathered in my sister’s hospital room to see the new baby, she gave an
account of her trip to the emergency room. It began as most do — she woke up around 4 a. m. feeling the early pangs
(阵痛) of labor. For the next two hours, she and her husband Bill timed the contractions (孪缩), and around 7 a. m.
decided it was time to leave for the hospital.
On the way, however, Bill announced that he needed to stop at Starbucks for some coffee.
“Excuse me?” my sister asked. “I’m in labor — remember?”
“But I might get sick if I don’t have my morning coffee,” Bill explained.
Bill promised her that he’d order the coffee to go. The next thing Debbie knew was that her husband was rushing
into their local coffee shop. Inside, the attendants behind the counter recognized Bill, and knew he was expecting a

second son, and asked when the baby was due.
“Today,” Bill said ordering his Americano.”
“Today?” the cashier asked.
Bill nodded. “Yep, Debbie is already in labor.”
Everyone offered up congratulations.
“So, where’s your wife?” someone finally asked.
“Out there,” Bill said pointing toward the parking lot where my sister was sitting in the car puffing heavily
through a contraction.
“Was she OK with stopping here?” the attendant asked, amazement in her voice.
“Not really,” Bill answered.
“Yeah, that’s probably why she isn’t waving back.”
As my sister concluded the story, Bill looked around at the disapproving faces in the hospital room.
“What’s wrong with that?” he asked.
“I had to have my coffee.”
I think his mother best summed it up when she announced, “I’m ashamed of my son.”
In his defense, Bill told us that he had been through the labor drill before with his first son, and therefore, he
knew he had time for a quick cup of coffee. He also pointed out that he did ask my sister if she wanted something to
drink, too.
Finally, Bill looked to me, the only other male in the room and asked if I agreed with him.
“I’m not saying a word,” I replied looking around the women in the room. “We’re outnumbered in here.”
I also explained that if I were ever having a heart attack, I wasn’t calling him for a ride to the hospital.

People often imagine that a knowledge of languages is sufficient to make an interpreter. Of course it is a
prerequisite, as are two hands to a professional boxer. But just as the fact of having two hands does not make a boxer,
so the knowledge of different languages, be they many or few, does not make an interpreter. It is only an instrument
which you must learn how to use in a particular way — for which you may or may not be gifted.
The basic qualities required of the interpreter are not exceptionally rare, but their combination is very uncommon.
They are:
(1) A capacity for being passively receptive, i.e. for drinking in readily and without any personal reaction all
that may be said by the speaker.
(2) The type of quick-wittedness which makes for prompt and effective repartee (妙语), interpretation being a
sort of mental game of tennis.
(3) A good memory, because all the tricks of the trade are intended only to make up for its deficiencies. Two

jiajiao6767 )
things are expected of the interpreter’s memory: first, that it should store up an exceptionally large vocabulary in the
related languages and supply instantly the required word or phrase; second, that it should retain for a very brief
period(seldom more than one hour) a picture as full, detailed, and accurate as possible of what has just been said after
which the interpreter will be well advised to wash his mind clear of most of what he has memorized. In this latter
function, the interpreter’s memory is therefore the reverse of the comedian’s. Whereas the actor has ample time to
learn his part, gradually, and methodically, and is then expected to remember it over a long period and repeat it on a
succession (连续) of occasions, the interpreter must wholly commit to his memory fleeting thoughts and words as
they fly past, and then bring them back to mind only once, a very short while later.
The work of the translator and that of the interpreter are fundamentally different and can hardly be combined.
Very rare indeed are people who can do both. The reason for this is clear: the translator can or should search at leisure
for the accurate term, as well as effort to express himself in the best possible grammar and style; he may re-write the
same paragraph ten times or more, improving it each time; he may consult all dictionaries and reference books, and
ask for help and advice. The interpreter, on the other hand, is given hardly any time to think, can consult neither
books nor friends, and must “put across”, immediately and as accurately as possible, whatever the speaker wishes to
convey. But he may express nuances (微妙) by varying the tone of his voice, he may paraphrase when he does not
find the exact word, he may repeat, correct or add to what he has just said, if he sees that he was not properly
understood. These are in reality two contrary techniques.
63. Interpretation is similar to playing tennis in that both need _________.
A. two hands B. quick response
C. mental fitness D. good muscle memory
64. A good memory is required of an interpreter so that he can _________.
A. memorize all that is said and remember it for a long time
B. memorize the important part of what is said and remember it for a long time
C. memorize for a short period all that is said and then forget about it
D. memorize all that is said gradually and completely
65. What is the author’s opinion of the qualities mentioned for an interpreter?
A. It is not necessary for the interpreter to possess all the basic qualities.
B. It is uncommon for the interpreter to possess all the basic qualities.
C. Certain qualities are more important than the others.
D. Only two of the qualities are actually required.
66. Which of the following can best indicate the author’s understanding of the difference between a translator and

an interpreter?
A. The qualities required of a translator are basically opposite what is required of an interpreter.
B. Being an interpreter is more stressful because an interpreter cannot take back what has been said.
C. Putting effort into combing the qualities of a translator and an interpreter can enhance their performance.
D. The qualities of a translator are easier to obtain than those of an interpreter.

Why should mankind explore space? Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup as human beings. What
prompted our distant ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and
environments?___67___. The wider the distribution of a species, the better its chance of survival.
Exploration also allows minerals and other potential resources to be located. Additional resources are always
beneficial when used wisely, and can increase our chances of survival. Knowledge or techniques acquired through
exploration, or preparing to explore, filter from the developers into society at large. ___68___. Also, we have already
benefited from other by-products, including improvements in earthquake prediction — which has saved many lives
— in satellites used for weather forecasting and in communications systems. Even non-stick saucepans and mirrored
sunglasses are by-products of technological developments in the space industry!
___69___. The chances of a large comet hitting the Earth are small, but it could happen in time. Such strikes in
the past may account for the extinction of dinosaurs and other species. Human technology is reaching the point where
it might be able to detect the possibility of this happening, and enable us to minimize the damage, or prevent it
completely, allowing us as a species to avoid extinction.
In certain circumstances, life on Earth may become impossible: over-population or wide spread diseases, for
instance, might eventually force us to find other places to live. While the earth is the only planet known to sustain
life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to inhabit other planets and moons. It is true that the lifestyle
would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future. ___70___.
A. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives.
B. Space allows us to expand and succeed: for the sake of everyone on the earth, now and in the future, space
exploration is essential.
C. The mysterious space objects varying in size have been fascinated scientists and scholars for years.
D. It appears that we are driven to ensure the success and continuation of not just our own genes, but of the species

Summary Writing10%
71. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no
more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
France, which prides itself as the global innovator of fashion, has decided its fashion industry has lost an
absolute right to define physical beauty for women. Its lawmakers gave approval last week to a law that would
make it a crime to employ ultra-thin models on runways. The parliament also agreed to ban websites that advocate
excessive thinness by promoting extreme dieting.
Such measures have a couple of uplifting motives. They suggest beauty should not be defined by looks that
end up threatening health. That's a start. And the ban on ultra-thin models seems to go beyond protecting models
from starving themselves to death --- as some have done. It tells the fashion industry that it must take responsibility
for the signal it sends women, especially teenage girls, about the social tape-measure they must use to determine
their individual worth.
The bans, if fully enforced, would suggest to women (and many men) that they should not let others be
arbiters of their beauty. And perhaps faintly, they hint that people should look to intangible qualities like character
and intellect rather than dieting their way to size zero or wasp-waist.
The French measures, however, rely too much on severe punishment to change a culture that still regards
beauty as skin-deep -- and bone-showing. Under the law, using a fashion model that does not meet a government-
defined index of body mass could result in a $85,000 fine and six months in prison.
The fashion industry knows it always has a problem in focusing on material adornment and idealized body
types. In Denmark, the United States, and a few other countries, it is trying to set voluntary standards for models
and fashion images that rely more on peer pressure for enforcement.
In contrast to France’s actions, Denmark’s fashion industry agreed last month on rules and sanctions regarding
the age, health, and other characteristics of models. The newly revised Danish Fashion Ethical Charter clearly
states: “We are aware of and take responsibility for the impact the fashion industry has on body ideals, especially
on young people.”
Relying on ethical persuasion rather than law to address the misuse of body ideals may be the best step. Even
better would be to help promote notions of beauty beyond the material standards of a particular industry.
