Amy was taking her first art class at school. She was very excited.
The art teacher, Mrs. Williams, told the children to 1 the flowers in a vase at the front of
the class.
“Don’t worry if your painting doesn’t look 2 like the painting by the person next to you,”
she said. “The important thing is to paint what you see.”
Amy worked very hard. She spent so long painting that her hand began to hurt from holding
the brush. She put the brush down for a moment to rest and looked at the painting next to hers.
“That’s really good,” she said to Gina. Gina’s painting was small and tidy. Every flower was
just like the real flowers in the vase.
“Thanks,” said Gina. She looked over at Amy’s painting. “Oh! What happened to yours?”
3“What do you 3 ?” asked Amy. She looked at her own painting. It was very different from
Gina’s. It covered the whole page and the colors were brighter than the real flowers.
“It looks like a big 4 ,” said Gina. “Did you pour the paint?”
“No.” said Amy, 5 . “I painted what I saw, just like Mrs. Williams said.”
“It’s OK, you know,” said Gina. “Not everyone is good at art.”
Mrs. Williams heard what Gina said, and she came over to look at Amy’s work.
“Oh, my dear,” said Mrs. Williams. “I think it’s wonderful, Amy. It’s so full of 6 and
happiness.”
Amy was very 7 .
“But Mrs. Williams, it doesn’t look anything like the flowers you told us to draw.” Gina said.
“Maybe not to you, Gina. Everyone sees different things when they look at the world.” She
showed them a picture in a painting book. “This is a picture an artist painted of his own face. This
is 8 he saw himself.”
“But...but... it’s just a few lines,” said Gina. “It doesn’t look anything like a real person.”
Mrs. Williams 9 to Amy, “You should read this book, Amy. There are a lot of different
kinds of paintings and one isn’t better than the other.”

Sixteen years ago, I learned an important life lesson in the back of a New City taxi.
I was on my way to the station when a black car 11 jumped out of a parking space right
in front of us.
My driver hit the brakes (刹车) hard, and 12 the other car by a few centimeters. The
driver of the other car, the man who had just nearly caused a huge accident, started 13 at us.
My taxi driver just smiled and moved his hand. He was really 14 !
“Why did you just do that?” I said at him angrily, “This guy nearly destroyed your car and
could 15 have sent us to the hospital!” This was when my taxi driver told me 16 I now
call “the Law of Garbage Trucks (垃圾车)”.
“Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of 17 and
full of disappointment (失望),” he said. “As their garbage is more and more, they need a place to
dump (丢弃) it, and if you let them, they’ll dump it on you. 18 when someone wants to dump
garbage on you, just smile, move your hand, wish them well, and move on. And you yourself will
be 19 because of what you have done.
4I started thinking, how often do I let garbage trucks run right over me? And how often do I take
their garbage and dump it on other people — at work, at home, or on the street? It was on that day
that I said to myself, “I’m not going to dump any more.”
I began to see garbage trucks. I see the “garbage” that people are carrying. I see them
coming to dump it. And like my taxi driver, I don’t feel hurt.
I just smile, wave and move on. Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. So,
love the people who treat you right. 20 the ones who don’t.

Battling e-waste
E-waste, the world’s largest and fastest growing type of waste, doesn’t only come from
computers but other electronics as well.
In 2019, the world produced 53.6 million tons of e-waste.
The world’s e-waste will reach 74.7 million tons by 2030. That’s almost a doubling of e-waste
in just 16 years.
Today, only 15-20 percent of all e-waste is collected and recycled.
Why should we recycle e-waste?
E-waste has many valuable things in it, such as gold, silver and copper.
One smartphone battery can pollute 600,000 liters of water.
5What can we do?
·Try to repair your electronics instead of buying new ones.
·Check for recycling organizations and donate your broken electronics.
·Remove (去除) any batteries because they need to be recycled separately.
·Tell others to recycle e-waste.
1. In which year did the amount of e-waste reach about 37.3 million tons?
A. 2014. B. 2019. C. 2022. D. 2030.
2. In order to reduce e-waste, we can do the following things EXCEPT ________.
A. considering repairing rather than buying electronics.
B. recycling batteries together with other parts of electronics.
C. donating broken electronics to recycling organizations.
D. raising people’s awareness of e-waste recycling.

On May 6, a 30-member Chinese survey team set out to reach the top of Qomolangma, with
the latest technology to measure (测量) the mountain’s snow cap.
In 1856, a British survey team measured the height of Qomolangma. The result showed
Qomolangma reached a height of 8,840 meters above sea level. However, the exact measurement
of the world’s highest mountain has never been settled. In 1955, the height by an Indian survey team
was 8,848 meters, and later to 8,850 meters according to a US team in 1999.
Measuring Qomolangma is no easy task. The average air
temperature there is -29°C, and hurricane-like winds blow all the
time. According to Li Guopeng from the Chinese survey team,
although we have the likes of robots and drones, it’s uncertain that
they can operate well under poor conditions, which is why sending
human experts is still necessary.
But does a difference of a few meters really matter when it comes to the mountain?
The truth is that measuring the height of Qomolangma is much more than just getting one
number. At the point where the Eurasian (欧亚的) plate meets the Indian plate, Mount Qomolangma
came from an ocean 38 million years ago as a result of the two plates colliding. It makes it the
perfect window for observing crustal (地壳的) movements. Changes to the peak’s height can tell us
whether the two plates are heading toward or away from each other.
It might be true that settling a dispute (争论) was the driving force for continued exploration,
but the good thing is that we always end up discovering so much more.
4. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. Many countries tried to measure Qomolangma.
B. The height of Qomolangma increases each year.
C. There is no agreement on the height of Qomolangma.
D. It is quite difficult to measure Qomolangma.
5. The underlined word “colliding” in the passage means “___________” in Chinese.
A. 分离 B. 沉没 C. 碰撞 D. 喷发
66. What does measuring the height of Qomolangma mean to China?
A. It can show the world China’s new technologies.
B. It can help solve disagreements in science.
C. It can help explore the history of Qomolangma.
D. It can help get information on crustal movements.
C
The Beijing Winter Olympics was a great success. Many athletes took part in it. As a popular
sport at the Winter Olympics, ski jumping is one of the best examples to show the “superhuman”
power of athletes.
Ski jumpers jump into the air and appear to be almost flying in the sky.
How do they achieve this? Physics can offer us an explanation of how they
achieve this achievement. It involves the use of the laws of aerodynamics to
fight against gravity and increase lift while reducing drag.
To understand how ski jumping works, we need to consider three
elements: gravity, lift and drag. Gravity is the force that pulls us towards an
object, such as the Earth. Lift appears when an object is moving through the
air, as its surface comes into contact with air particles (微粒), the particles are pushed down and
away from the object, allowing it to move up. At the same time, this interaction creates drag, or
resistance, and slows down an object’s movement.
While there is nothing that the skiers can do about gravity, they can contort (弯曲) their bodies
into positions that allow them to achieve greater lift and avoid as much drag as possible.
According to the Smithsonian Magazine, “To do this, athletes keep their skis and body nearly
parallel (平行的) to the ground and place their skis in a V-shape just outside the form of the body.
This position increases the surface area that generates lift and puts them in the ideal angle of attack
(迎角) that will also maximize (最大化) lift.”
Because of how the sport works, athletes’ equipment is strictly controlled according to weight
and height in order to avoid any unfair advantages. This means suits must be tight (紧身的) in order
to make sure athletes cannot use them as a way to gain more lift.
For athletes, minor day-to-day water weight changes as little as 300 grams. It can mean that
suits will not be tight enough according to their body mass indexes.
7. What contributes to lift in ski jumping?
A. The force of gravity.
B. The upward force of air.
C. The interaction between air particles.
D. The interaction between athletes and air particles.
8. What should ski jumpers do in order to achieve the best performance?
a. Keep their bodies parallel to the ground.
b. Position their skis in a V-shape when they jump.
c. Keep their skis parallel to the ground.
d. Maximize the angle of attack.
A. abc B. abd C. acd D. bcd
79. What rule is needed to ensure fair play in ski jumping?
A. Standardized equipment is used to avoid unfair advantages.
B. Athletes can’t eat or drink anything before the competition.
C. Equipment must match the athletes’ weight and height.
D. Athletes are grouped according to their body mass indexes.
10. What’s the main idea of the article?
A. The scientific principles (准则) behind ski jumping.
B. The skills used by ski jumpers.
C. Some rules of the ski jumping competition.
D. How the laws of aerodynamics work in sports.
三、阅读填空 先通读下面的短文,然后根据短文内容,在文章后表格的空格内填入一个最
恰当的单词。每个空格只能填一个单词。

According to several recent surveys, some people fear public speaking more than anything else.
Luckily, this fear can be overcome (克服) with two simple methods: practice and using positive (正
面的) energy from the audience.
Practising for a speech is essential. After the task of writing the speech is complete, speakers
must practise, practise, practise. The more times they practise the speech, the more comfortable they
will discuss the topic. Using objects such as mirrors or video recordings as they practise can show
speakers what they look and sound like to the audience. Video is particularly helpful as it can be
watched many times, with the presenters focusing (集中) on one part at a time.
Another way of dealing with public speaking fears is using the audience’s positive energy.
Speakers need to remember that the audience want them to succeed. Something as basic as a small
nod or a smile from a member of the audience should give confidence to the presenters behind the
podium (讲台). While it is easy for nervous speakers to focus only on getting through the
presentation, using the audience’s good will help much in making a speech better.
All in all, these two strategies are sure to help with fear of public speaking. With proper practice
and audience empathy (共鸣), it is possible to overcome the fear of public speaking and deliver a
successful speech. So there is no need to fear public speaking any more.

Red Cross volunteers travel on horseback to help herders (牧民) in Golog, Qinghai Province.
They offer the herders modern medical care and service.
Zhou Tai, a head of the Red Cross Society of China, said that tapeworm infection (绦虫感染)
is one of the main diseases affecting the herders.
The disease can be treated by surgery. However, for a long time, the herders prefer to turn to
traditional methods like asking a lama for much advice rather than go to a doctor. Some of them
delayed (耽误) treatment because they wanted to choose a
certain date that the lama told them was lucky.
The volunteers’ major job is to educate local people about
medical science, and they use real cases to warn people of the
results of tapeworms.
Zhou said that more than half of the villagers accept their
suggestions, such as going to hospital and isolating patients at
home.
However, in tradition, some people still share bowls and
chopsticks with family members who have tapeworms, which helps spread the disease. Realizing
the importance of medical science still has a long way to go.
Every year, volunteers go to meadows (牧场) to provide services like giving free health care
to the elderly, explaining local medical treatment policies, teaching them how to use medicine
correctly and giving out donations when the area suffers floods and snowstorms. Since then, they
have helped cure 67 people.
Transportation here is inconvenient because of the hard places with mountains, so they came
up with the idea that volunteers ride horses to provide medical services. In addition, it is a wide area
with a few people, and volunteers need to ride about 30 kilometers from one family to another,
which is hard work.
Riding a horse is the simplest yet most effective way to deliver service and love from the Red
Cross Society.
“Smiles from herders are the best momentum (动力) for us to continue,” he said.
Volunteers on horseback bring health care to herders
 To help herders in Golog, Qinghai Province.
Aims
 To provide modern medical care and service for the herders.
 Delay treatment because of taking lama’s many suggestions.
 Share tableware with family members in a 6 lifestyle and spread the
Difficulties disease.

effective way.
