A picture of 17-year-old Zhang Guimei has flooded on China’s social media. The young girl with thick glasses
and short black hair, who is now the much-respected founder and president of the Huaping High School for Girls in
Lijiang, Southwest China’s Yunnan province, was smiling brightly into the camera.
Net users are deeply touched by the fresh-looking young face in the picture, which is totally different from
Zhang’s now aged and lined face people are familiar with, as it tells a story of a woman who has devoted her life to
promoting education and fighting poverty in poor areas.
Born in Northeast China’s Heilongjiang province in 1957, Zhang traveled to Yunnan at the age of 17 and has
been helping girls from poor areas pursue education for over 40 years.
Zhang helped establish the country’s first senior high school to offer free education for girls from poor
families. Since its opening in 2008, it has seen more than 1, 800 students progress to universities and colleges.
In July, 2020, the All-China Women’s Federation awarded Zhang a top honour for being an outstanding female
role model in China. On February 25, 2021 Zhang Guimei was recognized as one of the role models for poverty
alleviation (扶贫), and received a national honorary title from President Xi Jinping.

chance to learn the broad and colorful outside the world.”

There you are in your favorite clothing store. You don’t really need to buy anything, but everything is so cheap
and fashion! Before you know it, you leave the store with bags and bags of new clothes. On the surface, this
doesn’t seem so bad. However, there are a lot of hidden costs behind the cheap price tags.
To be honest, the fashion industry is terrible for the planet. Not only does it use up a lot of resources, but it
also heavily pollutes the environment with chemicals and unwanted waste.
Fashion is one of the least sustainable (可持续发展的) industries on the planet, commented Michael Stanley-
Jones, a program management officer with the United Nations Environment Program. “We’ve all become our own
waste managers, storing fashion waste in our closets, “ he noted.
It doesn’t just take up space in our closets, though. It also ends up in landfills (垃圾场) , too. In fact, three out
of every five clothes end up either being fired or sent to landfills.
But, thankfully, the fashion trends are changing.
People are thinking about what changes they can make to become sustainable, therefore, shopping secondhand
has become an increasingly popular and eco-friendly choice.
According to a survey, the secondhand market is predicted to reach $80 billion (about 518 billion yuan) by
2029. And, although fast fashion will continue to grow 20 percent over the next 10 years, secondhand fashion is
expected to grow an unbelievable 185 percent in that same amount of time.
Secondhand has become more socially acceptable and, for some, cool. Thrifting is now popular on TikTok.
“The only true sustainable way to shop is to not shop at all. ” Michael said, “Unless you’re buying clothes that
exist.”
33. What is the main idea of paragraphs 2-4?
A. People’s love for fast fashion. B. The harm caused by the fashion industry.
C. The way people waste clothes. D. Reasons why fast fashion is cheap.
34. According to the survey, we know that ________.
